I.  Bellwork: Q&A

  • What is spurious correlation?
  • Provide an example.

II.  Objectives:

  • Form groups to conduct a sociological study using the research process.
  • Evaluate various explanations for actions or events and determine which explanation best accords with textual evidence, acknowledging where the text leaves matters uncertain.

A.  Class Activity Conducting Interviews p. 24

  • Bathroom case study

B.  Research Project:  Due March 10: (Groups of 4 or less)

  • Define the Problem (3 pts)
  • Background Readings 2-3 articles: 1-2 paragraph summary of each topic and findings. (12 pts)
  • Hypothesis (3 points)
  • 4-5 questions (do not write Yes or No questions) (List Your Questions) (8 pts)
  • Interview 24 students (mix of males, females, different grades) Demonstrate with a chart or PowerPoint) (Record and analyze responses to your questions. (Create a chart or PowerPoint) (30 pts)
  • Based upon the data, formulate a conclusion and relate it to the problem and hypothesis. (10 pts)
  • The group (every member) presents the study to the class in an organized, smooth manner. (14 pts)
