Sociology – 12/16/2016

I.  Bellwork:

  1. What do you believe contributes to form the attitudes of people who discriminate against others?
  2. What needs to be done to change people’s attitudes and prevent discrimination?

II.  Objectives:

  • Analyze deviance and its social functions in terms of the civil rights struggle.
  • Cite textual evidence to support analysis of the civil rights movement, connecting insights gained from specific details to an understanding of the concept of deviance.

III.  Classwork: 

A.  Eyes on the Prize III (Answer in paragraphs with examples)

  1. Explain what the societal norms were in regards to African Americans in the south. (1-Paragraph) – Provide multiple examples
  2. In what ways did the discrimination in the south reflect their social institutions like school, government, work/business?
  3. Explain how elements of the civil rights movement are associated with the conflict theory of deviance.
  4. Explain how elements of the civil rights movement are represented the interactionist theory of deviance.  Use examples for both the southern whites & African Americans
