I. Bellwork:
- What do you believe contributes to form the attitudes of people who discriminate against others?
- What needs to be done to change people’s attitudes and prevent discrimination?
II. Objectives:
- Analyze deviance and its social functions in terms of the civil rights struggle.
- Cite textual evidence to support analysis of the civil rights movement, connecting insights gained from specific details to an understanding of the concept of deviance.
III. Classwork:
A. Eyes on the Prize III (Answer in paragraphs with examples)
- Explain what the societal norms were in regards to African Americans in the south. (1-Paragraph) – Provide multiple examples
- In what ways did the discrimination in the south reflect their social institutions like school, government, work/business?
- Explain how elements of the civil rights movement are associated with the conflict theory of deviance.
- Explain how elements of the civil rights movement are represented the interactionist theory of deviance. Use examples for both the southern whites & African Americans
