Week of 3-6-2017

Greetings room 111!

Happy March is Reading Month! Our theme this year is “Reading Rocks”! Last week we kicked off reading month with a Rockin’ Read Aloud/PJ Night in the gym! Thank you to our students from 111 that came we had so much fun šŸ™‚ If you weren’t able to come don’t worry, we have more in store for you to participate in soon! I am currently teaming up with the fundraising committee to plan a “Rockin’ Movie Night” in the next few weeks! I’ll keep you posted as this develops and send home a flyer as soon as the fundraising committee finishes it! We were even lucky enough to have a “Mystery Reader” come and read to our class last Friday! If you’d like to be a Mystery Reader just return the form you receive this Monday in your child’s homework folder and we’ll get you scheduled to come in šŸ™‚ Just remember you are a surprise mystery reader so shhhhhhhh don’t tell your child when you’re coming! Just go to the office and sign in on the day we schedule you and knock on our door. Your child will be thrilled it’s their parent! It’s going to be a great month in school, thank you in advance for all your participation and help to make it amazing!

*Be sure to check your March Activity calendar to help your child “dress accordingly” on the fun days we have sprinkled throughout the month and especially on Fridays!

PS. Friday you received a permission slip for a field trip we got extra money for last week from the office YAY! SO, we need to make sure we send in the forms ASAP! I am SO SORRY that we don’t have the funds to take chaperones on this trip šŸ™ But promise we’ll take many on the next one please forgive me! We are planning to have a “picnic” lunch in the hallway and read with our friends for reading month when we get back on Thursday, so please send a packed lunch to school on Thursday because we will miss our lunch time! Week of 1-9-2017

Ā  Room 111 KDG Newsletter

Week of January 9th, 2017

Dear Families,

Happy New Year! I hope this newsletter finds you all well rested and recharged to start a wonderful new year full of good health and love. I have had a wonderful and relaxing vacation with family and friends and as always miss my classroom kiddos! I am so proud of those students that went on RazKids and got started reading over the break! Your child was rewarded 500 bonus points from the teacher for their hard work!

With the start of the New Year, there will be some adjustments to our weekly homework assignments and the addition of our weekly spelling word families (and tests) to our individualized spelling program! This is very exciting and I feel we are ready to take on a more sophisticated school to home connection now. Here is what you need to know:

Spelling:

Each week, your child will be responsible for learning one or two new sight words from the pre-primer Dolch high frequency Sight Word list as usual. In addition, in January the kdg students in DPS begin learning ā€œword familiesā€. This week, our first word family is the ā€œā€“at word family.ā€ The teacher will send home a family note on Mondays which introduces the words your child is responsible to practice and learn. We will work on them every day in school and your child will take a weekly assessment every Friday to monitor their progress of the word families and Dolch high frequency sight words. I have circled three words on the ā€“at family note that will be the ā€œhot wordsā€ or words that you know I am putting on the assessment. In addition, the teacher will pick two ā€œcold wordsā€ that will make a total of five words tested so make sure your child practices ALL SEVEN WORDS. The last word on the test will be the Dolch word of the week.Ā  As always, if any of this seems confusing please feel free to pop in and see me, or send me an email! I will respond within 24 hours!

Homework:

Your child will continue making their phonics folder with the ā€œletter of the weekā€ for homework. In addition, I will be sending home a small ā€œpacketā€ of homework pages instead of the monthly calendars. This will allow students more practice of classroom skills and new word families! As always, I recommend one page per night so your child does not become overwhelmed! Homework packets will be handed out on Mondays and collected the following Mondays from now on giving your child seven days to complete them. Each week your child turns in their homework, they will get a point. At the end of each month, they can pick a prize from the prize box for their hard work! Remember, reading is also part of homework every night for 20 minutes and Raz Kids absolutely counts!

NWEA: This month we will be taking our NWEA test for the second time. This is an important assessment in math and reading and you can help your child prepare for it by reading daily and completing their homework every night. Also, the night before please make sure your child gets a great night sleep and eats a healthy breakfast. Also, please talk to your child about how this is just one test, but it should be taken seriously and they should take their time to listen and mark the best answers they can instead of rushing through and just clicking. As always, their report cards are affected by this assessment now and we want to show our best progress. I am excited to see changes in our growth data!

Week of 12/19-2016

Greetings room 111 families!

This week is going to be a review week for class. We will review all letters/sounds and words we know so far! Instead of sending home a packet this week please work on all letters/sounds and green cards your child has. In addition, please continue reading from your child’s reading packs every night šŸ™‚ Over the break I will send home a packet for your child to work on. We will be also decorating and eating snowman cookies on Friday in school. I have all the supplies for the cookies so don’t worry aboutĀ sending anything in šŸ™‚

Tomorrow is our reward for PBIS though, so please send your child to school in their pajamas for the reward day! They will be enjoying a movie! If you’d like to send them to school with ONE “junky snack” go ahead! (Like cookies, a chocolate bar, cupcake, brownie etc. but limit to one please!)

The last announcement is that Thursday morning at 9:15am is our Winter Singing Concert! I do not think the music department has a note to send home so I am trying to reach you all here to invite you! Don’t be late we’re in the first group to sing!!! See you there šŸ™‚
