Week of 1-28-2019

Dear Families,

I hope this message finds you all well and warm! Tonight Report cards will be coming home in your child’s homework folder. Yesterday we completed the Reading NWEA assessment and today we completed our Math NWEA assessment. Reports are not available for me to print for 24 hours, so I will be sending the printed reports next week!(The “Reading and Math Level” on the report card are still reflective of the first semester because the NWEA testing window is still open. The district will update the new scores from the January tests will be on the third report card). I am very proud of our class. Overall, we are improving in all our subjects and you will see an increase in scores. Yay for our efforts and hard work! Thank you again for all you do with your child at home to support their academic and social growth. If your child was absent last week or today then they will make up their assessment as soon as they return! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. Stay warm!

Mrs. Ross 🙂

I will send any updates of school information as they come. Have a wonderful week!

Mrs. Ross 🙂

Homework: This week your child will receive a math game to put in their math binder and the next 5 lessons in math.

*Popcorn: This week we will have popcorn sales so bring your quarters! I will collect them at 8:35 am before gym class.

*Library check out: This week we have check out. Please help your child bring place their books in the backpacks Monday evening!

*Reading Packs: Make sure your child is spending about 10-15 minutes reading at night on Raz-Kids and the books, letters/words you find in the reading packs. This will help your child SO much reviewing their personal bags each night! Those students who had books sent home last week, make sure they are in there next week because they will be switched for one to two more this week!

LA Books: Informational Books about “Penguins” (We will read and research about penguins this month).

*If your child has any personal books about penguins at home, we would LOVE to read them during class this month and discover facts from the text that we can learn and write about! If you’d like to let us read a book from your house, please make sure your child’s name is written inside the cover so we can get it back to you when we’re done researching penguins. Thank you to Bradley, Nolan, Morgan, Kaydin and Cohen for bringing in books and research articles about penguins for us to read!

*If your child does NOT have any penguin books, I would love to encourage your child to visit the Dearborn Public Library to get a library card, check out some great new books, and find some books on penguins!

*If you like looking on the computer with your child, we’d love to read some child friendly articles on penguins!

Writing Topic: Informational Writing: Penguins (Can, Have, Are) We have begun taking our writing plans and putting them into sentences in a rough draft. I am so proud of our writing skills! (-at family test will be Monday afternoon)

Spelling: -an family (can, *man, *fan, ran, van, *pan)

Sight Words: am, have

-words with a * are definitely on the test, I will add two cold words to make a total of 5 words on the spelling test on Fridays. In addition there will be the two “sight words of the week” to make sure we keep learning the sight words on the Dolch List!

(Students will work with the teacher on a specific “word family” each week and be assessed on Fridays each week (or Mondays if the week is short/or extra time is needed due to unexpected snow/cold days off). You will receive the results in the homework folders on Monday afternoons. Words will be posted on the blog each Sunday/or Friday. It would be beneficial to spend a few minutes each night working on reading and writing the words (and most importantly helping your child to see the first letter/sound is the only one manipulated to make the new word and because of this they all rhyme).

*Social Studies: Begin Next Unit: “Who Am I?”

1-25-2018

Dear families,

Due to the short week and the unexpected snow day, we will be taking our first spelling assessment of the -at word family on Monday. This will allow students two extra days to work on them in class and the weekend to read and practice writing them at home! I hope you have a wonderful and WARM weekend! Happy Friday.

Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break with family and friends. I had a lovely and lazy break with my darlings and am also happy to be back at school with yours 🙂 I wanted to thank you all once again for all your help and beautiful donations to our Friendsgiving feast! We had such an amazing meal and wonderful time together. We appreciate you so much. Here are a few things to know this week as we finish up the end of November lessons and head into December. How did that happen so quickly? Life is sweet I guess when you work with such wonderful children every day!

Important Dates and Information:

DuVall Book Fair is here: Yesterday we went to the DuVall bookfair and previewed all the great books it has to offer! Your child picked out some very special titles they liked and wrote down the prices. Please don’t forget to add tax! I will only send them back during school hours if they have money to spend now. So you can help by making sure they have their book fair money in an envelope or plastic baggie with their name on it and also have your child bring back the slip with the book titles for the ladies to help them locate the books 🙂 If you would prefer to visit the book fair with your child after school we have been told it will be open until 4:15pm (ish!).

*Homework: We have completed all the homework pages for module 1 in math, so this week we have sent two homework games for your child to add to their binders! Yay! Now your child has 12 games to play with every night! Make sure they are in sheet protectors before writing on them to ensure that your child can play them over and over again this year!

*Popcorn: This week there will be popcorn sales so bring those quarters at 8:35 am!

*Library check out: No check out this week because the library is filled with the wonderful books for the book fair! Your child may enjoy their library books for one more week!

*Reading Packs: Make sure your child is spending about 10-15 minutes a night on the books, letters/words you find in there. This will help your child SO much reviewing their personal bags each night! Those students who had books sent home last week, make sure they are in there next week because they will be switched for one to two more this week!

*Science: Unit on Climate and Weather cont. (working on a weather tracking sheet this week!)

*Social Studies: Continue New Unit on Needs and Wants. This week our focus is on how needs and wants can be satisfied by purchasing “Goods and Services”! You can help by sending in more pictures of goods and services for us to sort, discuss and learn about this week! In addition, when you go to the store from now on with your child you can discuss and review if you are purchasing a good (something that I can touch, possibly hold in my hand and take home with me) or a service (something that someone does for me that helps me). Thank you in advance for all your continued support. Here are a few examples that we sorted yesterday:

Goods: vegetables, dolls, chicken breast, a doll house                    Services: mechanic, teacher, hair stylist, chef, dog walker
