***IMPORTANT NOTICE, PLEASE READ!
Dear parents,
I realize that now that we are at the end of the semester, you are even more concerned about grades than you have been before; as a parent of a son who is finishing his first semester of high school, I’m right there with you. However, I have one request: PLEASE don’t email or call me to talk to me about rounding up your student’s grade. This doesn’t work out for anyone in any positive way. I am willing to discuss this policy with you, of course, but not as part of a discussion about why I should give your student a certain grade in the class. I am also happy to discuss a student’s performance in the class and explain why specific grades on specific assignments were what they were as well as to review with you what is or was missing and how situations can be rectified or avoided in the future. If you are going to email me from here on out, PLEASE use a subject line that says the email is NOT in reference to your student’s grade. Otherwise, there is every possibility that I won’t open the email.
Best,
M. Palise

Here are pictures of my daughter helping me out in my grading frenzy. At the moment, she was helping me with Amy Golembiewski’s binder. I think she likes it, Amy. She wasn’t that kind to others. 😉
Here is the binder/folder/notebook table of contents. Use it to update the table of contents I gave you earlier in the semester. Be sure your TABS are clearly labeled so I know which tab to look through for each assignment. Be sure your PAGES are labeled. Be sure your ASSIGNMENTS are clearly labeled so I know which assignment is which. If you have any assignments which were marked “Fix & Resubmit,” be sure you have fixed them; also, HIGHLIGHT that assignment in the TABLE OF CONTENTS so I know to look for it as a fixed and resubmitted assignment. I will be collecting the binder/folder/notebook on Friday, 12/19/14. Please do your best to make your binder/folder/notebook as lightweight as possible by removing any extraneous material before turning it in to me. NOTE: THE ARTICLE OF THE WEEK #5 CCR SHOULD APPARENTLY BE A CCR (SUMMARY FOR ARTICLE OF THE WEEK #6. Sorry for any confusion.

Here is the semester plan for the rest of the year, outlining in general what we are doing and when we are doing it. Keep in mind, this is a living document and as such is subject to change without advanced warning (there will be at least one assignment added for LotF aside from the reading assignments listed, etc). However, this should give you an idea of what we are doing so you can budget your time accordingly.

9/2/14:
1 — Create a goodreads account @ http://www.goodreads.com. Use a professional name, not “bigpimpinthug.” Search for Mr. Palise and send me a friend request. Then I can invite you to our group.
2 — Sign up for remind101. Send a text message to (754) 220-7762. In the body of the message send “@la3first,” “@la3second,” “@la3third,” “@speech4thh,” or “@la3sixth,” whichever is appropriate for your class.
3 — Read Class in the Classroom. Summarize it the article. (No, I won’t tell you how long it needs to be.) DUE 9/3/14
4 — Read the syllabus/expectations with your parents. Sign the back page and return it to me on Thursday, 9/4/14. You can find a copy of this under the “Class Info” tab if you need it.
5 — Fill out the top half of the goal sheet. Be thorough and specific. You can find a copy of this under the “Class Info” tab if you need it. DUE 9/3/14
3/13/14: SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT: Write a grammar test of the same style as the one you took for your first grammar test this semester: it will be a story that uses the grammar skills we’ve been working on, both correctly used and incorrectly used. You will provide 4 answer choices that could reasonably be thought to be correct but are wrong (or are right, if the sentence in the story is wrong). Of the answer choices, one must be “No change.” You must include the following skills in the questions:
Colons to introduce a list
Colons to introduce a quotation
Colons to introduce another independent clause (an announcement)
Pronouns (with an ambiguous reference)
Pronouns (with an indefinite pronoun to test singularity (“everyone needs his or her…”))
Pronouns (with a plural antecedent)
Pronouns (with an obvious gender reference in the antecedent)
Pronouns (with a consistent point of view (first-person to first-person, third-person to third-person, etc)
Subject/verb agreement (with portions)
Subject/verb agreement (with indefinite pronouns)
Subject/verb agreement (with intervening phrases)
Subject/verb agreement (with “and” joining a compound subject)
Subject/verb agreement (with “or” or “nor” joining a compound subject)
The story will be a new adventure for Jem, Scout, and Dill. It can involve them trying (unsuccessfully, of course) to bring out Boo Radley. It can involve any of the characters, settings, or plot elements we have met up through chapter 10. It can take place at or in between any point in the story up through chapter 10. However, it must be an original adventure and creation of your own, based on what you know of the characters and their personalities as well as the town itself. It must include DIALOGUE as well as narration.
The length of the story is up to you, as long as it includes all the elements required.
DUE MONDAY, 3/17/14
• Type and print the assignment
• Format it to look like the test I gave you previously
• Include a separate answer key
• Answer key format:
1. B. Colon with quotation
Can we include more than one skill in a question?
Yep. 🙂
3/11/14: Read Chapter 8 and Chapter 9 of To Kill a Mockingbird. For each chapter, write your own study guide, with answers and lines to prove the answers. The study guides should include questions about characterization and conflict. They may have some “remembering” and “understanding” questions, but they must each have at least one “applying” question and at least one “analyzing” question. These are due 3/13/14, Thursday.
Mr.Palise, what is the writing prompt for the paragraph we had to do for the vacation?
Basically, Ehab, it was give me a description of the state of society, especially social and race relations, in the early to mid-20th century in the US. Then, support that description with specific examples and details from the presentations you all listened to.
I don’t remember my exact wording, to be honest. If anyone wants to correct me, they should feel free to.
Hope this helps,
Palise
Mr. Palise, do you want the works cited to be numbered, in alphabetical order, and in the powerpoint or separate sheet of paper? Do we necessarily need a book source, because I depended on getting a book from the school library yesterday, but since the snow day I wasn’t able to.
Never number; always alphabetize. You should include it at the end of the powerpoint, and you should also give it to me on a separate piece of paper.
See what you can do about getting a book. I would have preferred for you to go to Centennial yesterday or today. You may also try to find an e-book.
Hope this helps,
Palise
Are we supposed to indent the paragraphs in the annotated bib??? And for the in text citations is it okay if its a long title? Also can we skip citing the pictures and call it a day 🙂
Please be ready for class on Monday:
1 – Have your research done.
2 – Have your presentation ready to go. Be ready, if I were to call on you, to deliver your presentation.
–Make your presentation between 2-4 minutes long
3 – Have your list of works cited and your annotated bibliography.
4 – If possible, have your presentation printed out and with you. Just do it in black and white…no need to spend color ink on it.
If you have any questions, post them here and email me at palisem@dearbornschools.org
Mr. Palise, can u send me the rubic that has the requirements for the research project to my email please.I did not know we were going to have a snow day.
palise can u check the email i sent you
Courtney, I emailed it to you on the 7th. Check your mailboxes.
Best,
Palise
Mr. Palise,
How long should our annotated bibliographies be? Some of mine are close to a paragraph, but others are only a sentence or two.
It will depend on the length of the original source. A longer source will have a longer summary, and a shorter source will have a shorter summary.
Alright, thanks! Plus, I emailed you another question as well, so if you could please check it I would appreciate it! Thanks again!
I should already have replied to you.
If we have a different source that we need to cite, in this case a scholarly journal, should we just follow the instructions on the Purdue OWL website? I remember you mentioning something about the MLA format we were using was a little different then the newest one.
Kind of. Follow their directions, but ask me tomorrow. 🙂
Mr palise. How do you cite an online periodical and what if there arnt any books on your topic. I checked 3 libraries and could not find any.
Whatever your topic is, there will be a book out there for it. Maybe that book won’t be devoted only to your topic, but there will be a book that at least addresses your topic. Talk to me in class.
As for the online periodical, cite it like a webpage.
