New Spelling

I have had many requests to test their students are harder words, therefore I have decided to individualize the spelling.  Students will now be testing each other and may now take the tests at their own pace.  They should complete at least one a week but are welcome to do more, if they finish their grade level I will move them to the next level.  They must have 100% to pass the test.  Because I am starting this in week 4, if students did not get 100% in weeks 1-3 they will need to redo those tests to get 100%.  Below is a link to the new spelling page on my blog that has all the words.  Here is a list of which week each student will be studying this week.

MEAP Testing – This week the 3rd grade will be taking the Language Arts section of the MEAP on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 8th and 9th from 9 am-11 am.  Please make sure that they eat a good breakfast, protein is best, get plenty of rest the night before and arrive on time.  If you need to make doctor appointments please try not to schedule them during this time.  Please make sure your student knows that MEAP is not something to be nervous about.  It is just test like any other test we take in class.  They just need to try to do their best.

2nd graders will be having math time with Mrs. Truxall during the MEAP testing.

New Student – We have a new student starting on Monday.  She is a 2nd Grader and her name is Leah Rustom from Oakman.  Please introduce yourself and make her and her family feel welcome.

Math Fact Sheets – My class is no longer doing math fact sheets each week.  All students should be practicing in their facts everyday using www.everydaymathonline.com.

If you are having any trouble getting on Everyday Math Online please come see me and I will help you solve your problem, if the devise you are using is portable (ipad, laptop, Kindle Fire) please bring it with you.

If you are unable to practice facts on the computer then your student should be using flash cards or you should just quiz them as you drive in the car or do other activities.

  • 2nd graders should know all their addition and subtraction facts and be starting on multiplication by the end of the year.
  • 3rd graders should know all their addition, subtraction, multiplication and be starting on division by the end of the year.

Walk-and-Roll-A-Thon – Pledge sheets and money for the fundraiser is due this Friday, October 11th.  The students will do the Walk-a-thon on October 18th.

Field trip – Our field trip to the Michigan Science Center is quickly approaching.  Here are a few details you need to know.

  • If you are not chaperoning, please let me know if you would like your child placed in a certain car.  I have 16 chaperones and 19 children, so only a few parents will be watching other students.
  • The classrooms at the Michigan Science Center are not large enough for the parents to attend.  They have asked that I have only have 2 adults in the classroom including myself.  During the class time you will be free to explore the Science Center or chat in the cafe.
  • Please remember to pack a paper bag lunch, there is a cafe available, however, we only have 30 minutes to eat, so if there is a long line, you may not have time to eat.
  • Please make sure that you have filled out a form in the office for driving.  You are not allowed to drive if you have not completed the form.

Field Trip Permission Slip

Dear Parents,

Tomorrow is the last day to turn in your permission slip to the Michigan Science Center.  This trip is going to be exciting and fun.  However, this is an educational trip that is part of what we are learning for science.  I expect to have 100% attendance, however, if your child will be unable to attend for some reason please send me a note to let me know.  I need to pay the Science Center on Monday.

If you misplaced your permission slip I have attached a copy.  Please print it, sign it, and  return it tomorrow.  If money is an issue please let me know, we might be able to help with funding.

Walk and Roll a thon

Dear Parents,

Howe PTA is sponsoring a really cool event with all kinds of different opportunities for fundraising and prizes.  The biggest prize is an iPad mini, there are Zap Zone gift cards, Target gift cards, stuffed animals, cash and more.  There is even a pizza party for the winning class. This will be the PTA’s biggest event of the year so it would be awesome to show your support.  The money we raise will go 100% for the students, it will be used for field trips, assemblies, fun hands-on science workshops and much more. We have many exciting plans and we really appreciate your support in helping us fulfill our plans.

Please turn in the pink “Early Bird” forms by next Wednesday, October 2nd.

Attached is a package of information that will make much more sense tomorrow afternoon. This is just to get you primed. More detailed information will be sent home tomorrow with your child so please be sure to look for it.

Lice Prevention

Dear Parents,

As you already know from the note at the beginning of the week we have lice in our room.   Please try to be proactive and buy some type of lice prevention product.  Fairy Tales is a brand that has several kinds there are many others.  Please keep the girls’ hair tied back in a pony tail or bun.  Please keep the boys’ hair shorter for a while.  Please check your child’s hair daily for lice or eggs (nits), let me know right away if you spot any on your child.  In order to prevent spreading this in our room and school, please keep your child at home until all nits and lice are gone.  You are not required to keep them home after the first treatment; however last year some classrooms had lice in their room for months because children didn’t stay home and it kept spreading.  Nobody wants lice so please help us out.  Here is a link to – Circle of Friends Lice Defense Hairspray Ulta.com – Cosmetics, Fragrance, Salon and Beauty Gifts –

A Stress Free Morning Routine for Back to School

Let’s go! Let’s go! Come on … you’re going to miss the bus! I don’t know where your favorite jeans are; it’s not my responsibility. What do you mean you still have homework? Did you brush your teeth yet? Let’s go! I’m leaving… NOW!

Oh I hope your mornings don’t sound like that above. If it does, it’s not too late to turn that ship around. The key to having a stress free morning routine is to have a smooth bedtime routine. Remember, a routine is something that is followed regularly, standard procedures. Without the consistency you will have an uphill battle.

Here are some tips to a stress free morning routine:

• No yelling. Raising your voice, albeit frustrated, is only going to escalate matters.

• Early to bed, early to rise. That one is simple.

• Showers and baths should be taken at night. You think you’ll have time in the morning, but you rarely do.

• Look over all homework for completeness before bed; don’t assume it’s finished.

• Before bed ensure lunches are made, backpack is packed and there are no surprise “Oh I need xxx today!”

• Give singular instructions. Don’t say, “I want you to finish your homework, eat breakfast, get dressed, comb your hair, brush your teeth and be in the car by 8:15.” To a child, that sounds like “blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.” One instruction at a time works wonders.

• Provide instructions once. If you’re doing this, stop: “Johnny, it’s time to get dressed.” Two minutes later, “Johnny, we’re going to be late if you don’t get dressed now.” Two more minutes later, “Johnny, honey, I told you to get dressed.” “Johnny, Mommy is going to be late, now go get dressed.” To a child that sounds like “Oh mom is good for asking about five more times before she really goes ballistic!” Repeated requests only send the message that junior doesn’t really have to do it now.

• Set consequences and stick to your guns. If you tell your child the car is leaving at 8:15 sharp, make it happen. Clearly you can’t leave your child behind, so leaving without her isn’t an option. Tell her you will be leaving whether she is ready or not. Sending a 10 year old to school with uncombed hair, pajamas and an empty belly might be just the catalyst for change.

You are the parent; you set the tone for the morning routine. You need to be actively involved in the morning routine. Follow the steps above and I guarantee ‘joy will come in the morning!’
