A Peek at the Week

Star of the  Week – Maya

Field trip – Our field trip to the Green Living Science Recycling Center is this Wednesday, 10/14/15 –

Our bus is scheduled to arrive between 9:15 and 9:30.  Chaperons please check in with the office and get a visitors pass then check in with your teacher so that she knows that you have arrived.  Then please wait in the cafeteria.  There is a Tornado Drill scheduled for 9:15 AM.  My hope is the bus will arrive early and we can leave before the drill.  If not we will need to wait until it is over to leave.  Remember if you do not have your ICHAT form in the office you will not be allowed to attend this trip.

Please be aware of the following details:
  • Plan for 3 hours.
  • The address is 1331 Holden Street, Detroit 48202.
  • Dress for the weather! The majority of the field trip is outside so wear appropriate shoes and clothing.
  • Rain Policy: We will hold field trips during slight rains but will  adapt field trips if storming or heavy rain.  If extreme weather conditions we will cancel the field trip for the safety of the children.
  • Bring a sack lunch!
  • Wear your Howe School tshirt or another red shirt.
  • Porta potty restrooms are available for use while visiting our facility. (So you might want to use the restroom before we leave the school.)

Keebler Cash -The students have been starting to track their Keebler Cash.  Each week they will be paid for completing all of their work in “Keebler Cash”.  They will get $25 for each week.  They will loose $5 for each missing assignment.  They will earn $5 for 100% on a spelling test or getting a gem for good behavior.  At the end of the marking period we will have a party to celebrate all our good work.  The students can all bring in old or unwanted toys from home.  They can sell them to each other for their “Keebler cash they earned.

Missing assignments – all previous missing assignments are due by Friday 10/16/15.  If they are not turned in by Friday they will get a 0.  From now on all missing assignment from the previous week are due by the following Monday or they will get a 0.  The zero assignment scores will be lowering the report card grades.  Please help your child keep up with missing assignments by watching your Parent Connect.

Book Bags should start this week – Mrs. Auon will be our book bag mom.  She will be coming in on Tuesdays to switch out the book bags for new books.  Please use these books to help complete the reading logs.  Reading logs will be due on Mondays with the book bags.

3rd Grade Math test-   will be on Thursday, October 15, 2015.  A study guide went home last Thursday.  Below is a copy of the study guide in case your student didn’t show it to you.   Completed study guides are due on Monday, 10/12/15.  Unit 1 covers the following standards:

3.MD.1  Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram.

3.MD.3 Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step “how many more” and “how many less” problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the bar graph might represent 5 pets.

Homework

Reading – Each day your child should be reading at home for 20-30 minutes.  They have a reading log to fill out each day.  We will be doing the Pizza Hut book it program and they will get a coupon for a free personal pizza each month they turn in all 4 reading logs.  As soon as I have finished reading test for all students we will start sending home book bags.  Until then they should read what ever book they would like.  All students check out 2 books from the library each week.  They may also read using MyOn and MobyMax.   Please see the links section of my blog for how to log on.

Math Facts– It is very important to memorize their addition and subtraction (in 2nd grade) multiplication and division (in 3rd grade) facts.  These should be practiced on a regular basis at home.  Moby Max is one of the programs we will be using to practice and test their Math Facts.  I suggest using this program 5-15 minutes each day and we will be using it to test math facts once a week.  The information on how to log on at home is in the links section of my blog.  We will be doing this instead of the Math Facts paper tests.

3rd Grade Math – This is the Math Homework. We are currently in Unit 1 – Measurement and Data.   We have tested all students with the Front Row Math program on this unit and quite a few students are working below grade level on this unit in math.  I am teaching the 3rd grade level state standards in class, however it is important that the students learn the standards that are below their level also.   You may log in as a parent and see your child’s grade level and progress.    If they are below grade level please have them use this program 15-30 minutes each day to try to catch up.   We will be having a test on unit 1 soon.   Please have your child practice at their level in the Measurement and Data section.  We will be testing on Lessons 18 and 20 soon.  Below are the passwords and  instructions on how to set up your Front Row account to view their progress.  They may also use MobyMax to practice math at home.

Front Row Parent Passwords

Spelling – Each Friday I will pass out the new spelling homework.  They should study the spelling words each night by completing one of the assignments on the homework.  Please complete the work on the back of the Tic tac toe form.  The Tic Tac toe form is due on Thursday.   They will also have a spelling sort due on Wednesday.

Missing Assignments – I have had quite a few missing assignments already this year.  As parents I would like you to help your child remember to complete any missing assignments and turn them in.  If any work is not completed in class it becomes homework and is due the next school day.  Please check your Parent Connect for any missing work and have your student complete it at home.  Most of the work is available on my blog if they have lost the paper.  If you can’t find the work please email me and I can tell you where to locate it or I will email you the assignment.  If you are having trouble getting on to Parent Connect please let me know and I will try to help you.

Field Trip – I am still missing 2 permissions slips.  Please turn these in on Monday.  If you are a parent that would like to attend the trip please make sure you fill out the Chaperone Forms that are on my blog under Parent Information.   If you do not have your Chaperone Papers turned in to the office you will not be able to attend our field trip.

Montessori at Home and Chaperoning

Thank you everyone who came to the open house tonight.  We had a great turn out.  Next time we have a school event or presentation, if your child is making noises, please bring them to the hall so that everyone else can hear the presentation.  Thanks! 🙂

If you missed the presentation tonight please review my blog.  You will find lots of important information.  You also missed signing up for Parent Teacher Conferences.  I will post them on the classroom door for a couple of weeks if you still need to sign up.

I was talking to one of the parents about things that you can do to be a Montessori home.

Maria Montessori taught the child to be independent.  Teach them how to do things for themselves instead of doing things for them.  Give them chores to do to help around the house.  Let them cook with you.  Children of this age can prepare many food items for themselves.  Put things on low shelves so your children can help themselves or get things on their own.

Here is the link to a good book about teaching Montessori at Home:

Teaching-Montessori-Home-School-Years

If you are interesting in chaperoning on our field trip on 10/14 please print out the chaperoning forms, sign them and return them to school.  They can be found under Parent information.
