NWEA Testing – We will be testing on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday for 3rd Grade.   2nd Grade will test only on Monday and Wednesday.  Please be sure your child is well rested and well fed (protien not sugar) on testing days.

Social Studies Quiz – Both 2nd and 3rd Graders will have a social studies quiz on Tuesday.   Please log into Studies Weekly and reread all the material to review.   Here is a study guide with additional information for the 2nd graders, you will only need page 1 of the study guide.   The 3rd grade will only be tested on the material in Studies Weekly:

To log in to Studies Weekly: go to StudiesWeekly.com

User name: FirstnameLastname (must have capital first letter for each name, no spaces)

Password: Firstname (must be capitalized)

2nd-grade-unit-1-study-guide

Grading – To be sure that your student’s papers have been graded and recorded you should look for a number with a circle around it.   You should also see a check in the upper right hand corner.  The check means that it has bee recorded in the grade book.  Here is our grading scale:

1 = 95-100%

2=80-94%

3=70-79%

4=0-69%

If you do not see a number in a circle and a check you should sent if back to school to be recorded.   Sometimes I will put a star at the top instead of a number.  If students get a redo, this usually means they got a score that is less than 79%.  They should correct their mistake, write redone at the top and turn it in again.  They will get partial credit for a redo.  I suggest students save their papers for a week to 2 weeks to make sure they are graded and recorded before recycling.

Daily Schedule – is finally updated.  Here is the link to find it – Daily Schedule

Missing Flash Drive – I’m sorry that things are talking longer than usual to post.  I recently lost my flash drive with all my data and I am having to work to recreate things that were already complete.

Communication – Many people are making comments on the blog and Google classroom.  It is best to send all questions to my email.  I may or may not always check the comments on these other sites regularly and you question could get missed.   It is usually a good idea to put all communication in writing.  Sometime if you tell me something, then 4-5 students or parents ask me questions after you told me something, then I might forget what you said.  If it is important, please send an email.

NWEA MAP Testing – will be this week and next.  We will be testing in the morning.  Please be sure that your child is well rested (children this age need 10-12 hours of sleep) and has a good breakfast (protein not sugar).

Homework and Lesson Plans –

Fridays I will be sending home the Spelling homework and Spelling sort.  This assignment will be turned in on Wednesdays.  I will also be sending home a reading log.  Students should be reading each night and completing the log each night Reading Logs will be due Thursdays with the book bags.   I will only send home one book a week.  They may use books from home or the library if they need more books to finish their log.  All students should be practicing their math facts a few minutes each night.

I will be making assignments on Google classroom and on the lesson plans that are on my blog.  These assignments will all be completed in class.  If your student is absent or does not have time to complete the work in class then you can print it from the blog.

Snacks – we don’t each lunch until 12:30 each day.  The students get very hungry by that time so we usually eat a healthy snack around 10 am.  Please provide fruits, veggies or other healthy snacks.   We count our fruits and veggies each day and we will earn an extra recess when we have reached 400 healthy snacks.  We are already at 85!  Please do not send juice or pop to drink.  The only beverage allowed in the classroom is water.

Thank you to all the parents who volunteered to help in the classroom.  I have several volunteers for Friday morning.  I won’t need everyone every week.  But this week, everyone who volunteer can show up when they do drop off and we can work out a schedule.  I have several other projects that I need help with that we can discuss on Friday.

  1. To get to Google Classroom – https://classroom.google.com/u/1/h
  2. IMPORTANT – Click on the down arrow next to the email address in the upper right and corner and sign out-THIS IS NOT YOUR STUDENT
  3. Sign in with the student’s lunch card number@dearbornschools.org as the username and their passwork is their birthday in month/day/year format, like this: mmddyyyy. For example February 3, 1965 would be 02031965.
  4. If they don’t know their lunch card number email me and I can send it to you.

Happy Summer

I wanted to thank everyone for all the well wishes and presents during the last week of school.  This was a very sweet and thoughtful class.  I will miss everyone who is moving up or moving away.   I hope everyone is enjoying their first few days of summer.

I would like to stress the importance of summer learning.  Attached is a video link explaining why it is so important for students to continue to use their brains during the summer.  If they don’t their is a significant loss in the reading abilities and cognitive skills that will cause them to fall behind their peers and is difficult to catch up again.  Please watch this 2 minute visual of what can happen if students don’t continue to learn.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ahhj3wxxkdM
What can you do to stop this?!
My blog has many learning opportunities.  There is Moby Max, Front Row, Study Island, an interactive science section.  The students know how to log in to all of the programs.  If they have trouble the log in information is on the blog or email me and I will try to help.   They can write stories, letters or postcards.  I would love to see their stories or letters!   Send them to me via Google Docs or my email.  Take trips to the museums or science centers.  Most public libraries have a summer reading program with activities and prizes for reading.  Get out there and have fun and keep those brains moving!!!
Enjoy your summer and keep me posted about your vacations and activities!  See you in the fall.
