Reading Log Change – Please Read

1st Reading Projects due Tuesday 11-21

Dear Parents,

I have had many requests for a change in the reading log.  Attach is the first page of suggestions on what you can do instead of the reading log.  You may still do the reading log if you wish, but I will no longer print them.  I am going to put the full project list on my blog under the Homework Tab and Book bag/reading log.  I will not print this each week.  The projects will be due every Wednesday.  Students should still read every day.  I am going to leave the amount of projects done up to the parent and child. Your child might do one project or five projects each week. Whatever you feel is an appropriate amount of projects for your child is what they need to do.

The projects/reading logs will be due on Tuesday next week since we have no school on Wednesday.

End of Marking Period – The first marking period ends this week.  All assignments are due by Wednesday.  I have created a new document on the blog for people missing Towers.  It is called Towers for Home and it is in the Towers and SRA tab on the blog.   I will continue to add Towers to it as I have time.  If there is a parent who would be willing to help type these in that would be helpful.  Please check your student’s parent connect for missing assignments.  Everything not turned in by Wednesday will be changed to a zero.  Remember it only takes a few zeroes to turn a student’s grade to a 3 or 4 especially in science and social studies where there are less assignments.

Social Studies Study Guide – Attached is a copy of the study guide for the social studies test.  Please print if you can and begin to work on it this weekend.  The social studies interactive notebook will be very helpful in answering the questions.  I will print this on Monday for anyone that didn’t or couldn’t print it on the weekend.  We will go over the answers in class and have a test on Wednesday. 3rd grade Unit 1 Stude Guide

Math Study Guide – Please make sure it is completed and returned by Monday.  We will review the answer and take the test on Tuesday AM.

Missing Work = Lower grades – Our marking period is quickly winding down.  Please make sure your assignments are all complete by next Wednesday.  I have put a zero for all past missing assignments and this has brought some students grades to 3 and 4 for the report card.  If they turn in the missing work their grades will increase.

Interactive Social Studies Notebook – Below are picture of all the work from our Interactive Social studies notebook please make sure your student has completed them neatly.  This will also serve as a good study guide for the upcoming district common assessment next Wednesday.

Ali B. Star of the Week

Halloween Clothes & Celebration– We will be having a regular school day on Tuesday, October 31 from 1:35-2:20. Upper elementary students, grades three, four and five, are not wearing costumes.  These students can wear Halloween colors or shirts, if they want.

Our celebration for Halloween will be in the afternoon at the gym.  Mr. Borg could use some helpers and I’m not sure about supplies.  If you can help, please email him at borgj@dearbornschools.org .  Helpers should arrive at 12:20.

End of Marking Period is coming soon – There will be a 1/2 day on 11/3 the end of the marking period.  All old missing assignments are due by Wednesday 11/1.  I will start adding zeros where there are missing assignments, so that you are aware of what the grade will be without the missing work.

FALL FESTIVAL (sponsored by Howe PTA) Friday October 27th – 6:00pm-7:30pm
Let’s celebrate the fall season & Halloween holiday with an awesome party at Howe School!  We’ll be taking over the cafeteria and the interior courtyard with Halloween games & activities, a craft table, a picture backdrop area for photos, and even a haunted tent!  Candy will be handed out at each game station, and PTA will provide free cider & donuts!  All kids are encouraged to wear their best Halloween costumes!
This year we will also offer a concession stand with pizza, popcorn, water, & desserts for purchase!  The party begins at 6:00pm, so if you don’t have time to give the kids dinner, you can get them some dinner here at the party!
We’ll also be having a Jack O’ Lantern contest!  Bring in your best carved pumpkin, and we’ll light it up outside, assign it a number, and have the students vote on their favorite!  The winner of the contest will go home with a pumpkin pie!
In order to make this event a success, we will need a LOT of parent volunteers and helpers!  Your child brought home a flier for the party.  At the bottom of the flier is a list of sign-ups, including participating in the Jack O’ Lantern contest, helping at the concessions tables, running the craft table, and running a game outside for the kids!  The more helpers we have, the more fun the kids have!  Please consider donating your time and fill out a volunteer spot!
Cost is $3.00/child – this will help cover the cost of candy & supplies needed to make this event spectacular!
We also need the following supplies donated from willing parents:
– 3 packages of toilet paper (can be super cheap, 6 pack)
– 5 packages of fake spider webs (can be found at Target, Meijer, or craft stores)
**These items can be dropped off to the main office at any time before the party.  If you can donate one or more item, we would greatly appreciate it.
We’re looking forward to seeing all of you for this awesome event!  Thank you in advance for all your support!  Happy Halloween!

Box Tops – Are due this week.  The class with the most box tops earns a pizza party.  Make sure the box tops a properly labeled with your child’s name and the teacher’s name.  Help our class earn a Pizza Celebration.

My Health – I developed a hernia when I was in Europe carrying my heavy suitcase.  I will be sitting more than usually to help avoid the pain. I feel fine if I am sitting or not standing too long.  I will be having surgery on December 26th.  I may miss a few days of school in January depending on how quickly I heal.  Thank you for your support and understanding.
