Homework

Reading – Each day your child should be reading at home for 20-30 minutes.  They have a reading log to fill out each day.  We will be doing the Pizza Hut book it program and they will get a coupon for a free personal pizza each month they turn in all 4 reading logs.  As soon as I have finished reading test for all students we will start sending home book bags.  Until then they should read what ever book they would like.  All students check out 2 books from the library each week.  They may also read using MyOn and MobyMax.   Please see the links section of my blog for how to log on.

Math Facts– It is very important to memorize their addition and subtraction (in 2nd grade) multiplication and division (in 3rd grade) facts.  These should be practiced on a regular basis at home.  Moby Max is one of the programs we will be using to practice and test their Math Facts.  I suggest using this program 5-15 minutes each day and we will be using it to test math facts once a week.  The information on how to log on at home is in the links section of my blog.  We will be doing this instead of the Math Facts paper tests.

3rd Grade Math – This is the Math Homework. We are currently in Unit 1 – Measurement and Data.   We have tested all students with the Front Row Math program on this unit and quite a few students are working below grade level on this unit in math.  I am teaching the 3rd grade level state standards in class, however it is important that the students learn the standards that are below their level also.   You may log in as a parent and see your child’s grade level and progress.    If they are below grade level please have them use this program 15-30 minutes each day to try to catch up.   We will be having a test on unit 1 soon.   Please have your child practice at their level in the Measurement and Data section.  We will be testing on Lessons 18 and 20 soon.  Below are the passwords and  instructions on how to set up your Front Row account to view their progress.  They may also use MobyMax to practice math at home.

Front Row Parent Passwords

Spelling – Each Friday I will pass out the new spelling homework.  They should study the spelling words each night by completing one of the assignments on the homework.  Please complete the work on the back of the Tic tac toe form.  The Tic Tac toe form is due on Thursday.   They will also have a spelling sort due on Wednesday.

Missing Assignments – I have had quite a few missing assignments already this year.  As parents I would like you to help your child remember to complete any missing assignments and turn them in.  If any work is not completed in class it becomes homework and is due the next school day.  Please check your Parent Connect for any missing work and have your student complete it at home.  Most of the work is available on my blog if they have lost the paper.  If you can’t find the work please email me and I can tell you where to locate it or I will email you the assignment.  If you are having trouble getting on to Parent Connect please let me know and I will try to help you.

Field Trip – I am still missing 2 permissions slips.  Please turn these in on Monday.  If you are a parent that would like to attend the trip please make sure you fill out the Chaperone Forms that are on my blog under Parent Information.   If you do not have your Chaperone Papers turned in to the office you will not be able to attend our field trip.

Montessori at Home and Chaperoning

Thank you everyone who came to the open house tonight.  We had a great turn out.  Next time we have a school event or presentation, if your child is making noises, please bring them to the hall so that everyone else can hear the presentation.  Thanks! 🙂

If you missed the presentation tonight please review my blog.  You will find lots of important information.  You also missed signing up for Parent Teacher Conferences.  I will post them on the classroom door for a couple of weeks if you still need to sign up.

I was talking to one of the parents about things that you can do to be a Montessori home.

Maria Montessori taught the child to be independent.  Teach them how to do things for themselves instead of doing things for them.  Give them chores to do to help around the house.  Let them cook with you.  Children of this age can prepare many food items for themselves.  Put things on low shelves so your children can help themselves or get things on their own.

Here is the link to a good book about teaching Montessori at Home:

Teaching-Montessori-Home-School-Years

If you are interesting in chaperoning on our field trip on 10/14 please print out the chaperoning forms, sign them and return them to school.  They can be found under Parent information.

As you start preparing for the new school year, you can find the supply list here on my blog under class information.  We have a larger class this year so several kids will need to share a locker.  Please keep this in mind when getting a backpack.   PLEASE DO NOT get at back pack with wheels, they will not fit in the lockers.

If your family is like mine your summer schedule is a lot different than your school year schedule.  Vacations, staying up late and sleeping in all need to go on the back burner and start preparing for a new school year.   Wake the kids up a little earlier each day until you are waking up close to when they will be getting up for the school year.  Remember school age children need 10-11 hours of sleep each night to be well rested for school.

This blog will be my main form of communication this year.  To save paper we are not sending home as many notes anymore.  Please subscribe to the blog by putting your email in the subscription box on the home page, please check your email daily for messages and class updates.  Please makes sure I have a current email.  I will sent weekly updates and reminders of events and changes.

If you have any questions please email me at keeblek@dearbornschools.org

I look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, 9/8/15 at from 8:35 – 11:45.  We will bring the students back to the back door for pick up on the 1/2 day and every day.

Have a great Labor Day Weekend!

Happy Summer

On a sadder note I would like to inform everyone that Max the Hamster passed away.  He had a long happy life and brought joy to many children and adults.
