Thank You! Howe Montessori Summer Writing Program and Study Island Contest

I wanted to thank everyone that send in such wonderful gifts and cards during the last couple of days of school.  Everything was wonderful!  You are all so kind and generous!  I hope everyone has a safe, fun and wonderful summer.  I look forward to seeing everyone that is returning at our new school next year.  If you are  not returning, I wish you the best of luck in your new learning situation.   You have such a wonderful set of students,  I feel lucky to have been part of their lives.  Please keep in touch!

Ms. Nellie asked me to post this information for returning students.  A paper copy was sent home with the

Summer Bridge book.  If you have any questions feel free to email me  or Ms.  Nellie.  Her email is at the bottom of the post:

Howe Montessori Summer Writing Program for 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Students

This summer in order to support your child’s education, your Howe Montessori School, is requiring that all future 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students write every week. Third grade students need to prepare for their Writing MEAP very early on in the next school year. All 4th and 5th grade students need to write more and with better content from 4th grade and beyond.

This writing requirement is to write paragraphs on the 10 topics listed below, one topic per week. Each paragraph will consist of five sentences. The first sentence, a topic sentence which introduces your topic that is being written about. The middle three sentences tell about each of the (3) supporting ideas. The concluding sentence gives your opinion on what you wrote.

How to write a good paragraph? Start with a topic sentence, which is the main idea of the paragraph. The next part of the paragraph, called the transition, where the topic is written about in (3) supporting sentences and then a conclusion, which restates your topic sentence but should not be exactly the same as a topic sentence. Simple sentence structure is a group of words that make sense on its own, and a sentence which always includes a verb and a subject. All sentences will have a minimum of five words.

This writing requirement, does expect your best handwriting or typing, all spelling is to be corrected, while using proper punctuation and sentence structure. This writing needs to have a title at the top center, and all paragraphs will be properly indented. Future third grade students write at least one paragraph. Future fourth write at least 2 paragraphs. Next year’s fifth grade need to write at least three paragraphs for each topic. All completed writing should be e-mailed to Miss Nellie at kiesel221@comcast.net or and if not typed dropped-off at school weekly for Miss Nellie. These writing assignments will be graded and reviewed early in September, after school restarts at our new school building.

Lost and Found

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone is enjoying their last day of summer.   I hope that everyone got your summer packet information.  It is important that your students continue to use their minds over the summer so they don’t get mushy and loose their knowledge.  Every fall I can tell which students used the minds over the summer and which did not.  Often there is a major loss in reading level.  Keep learning fun, but keep learning!!!!

I am busy packing the classroom and I have found several things that students have left behind.  I have one of Brenna’s lunch boxes.  I think I found the missing Lego men that Aref lost earlier this year.  I have fancy white girls shoes.  And a black lunch bag.  I will leave all lost items on the front table in my classroom.  If they are not claimed they will be donated.

Have a great summer!!

SBAC Pilot Testing – The 3rd graders are piloting the new SBAC test this week.  This test is supposed to replace the MEAP within the next couple of years.  We started testing today and will continue and hopefully finish tomorrow.  The 2nd graders are having class with Ms. Polster during the 3rd grade testing time.

Culture Play – Please continue to practice your parts and songs at home and get your costumes ready!  Invite friends and family for Thursday, June 5th.  Students arrive at 5:30 and must be in their seats by 5:45.  Reminder: All students will be walking to Stout each day next week in the afternoon.  Please be prepared with rain gear, if needed.

Field Day/Picnic/Ice Cream social – June 9th we are having an all school Field Day/Picnic/Ice Cream Social.  Field day in the morning starting at 10 AM-11:30.  Volunteers are needed to help run the games.  Please contact Johnny Borg if you would like to help.  Each class will take turns.  Followed by a (bring your own) picnic lunch and ice cream (Provided by the Hausz Family, Thanks!).  Please come join us!

Summer Birthday Party – We have 5 students with birthdays in the summer this year (Natalie, Brenna, Yusef, Aref and Ameer).   We would like to celebrate everyone’s birthday at one party.   If you would like to bring at treat or snack to celebrate your student’s summer birthday please post what you would like to bring so we don’t have 5 sets of cupcakes.  It would be nice to have only one set of  sweets, and maybe some drinks, munchies (chips or pretzels) or something else.  It is up to you.

Cultural Play June 5th

Dear Parents,

Our Cultural Play is quickly approaching.  We will be walking to Stout everyday in the afternoon next week to practice on the big stage.  Be sure they dress for the weather and have rain gear if needed.

The lines went home today, please have your student practice them at home for 5-10 minutes each day.  It would be nice if they were memorized.  Last week I sent a blog post with the parts and pictures of what the costumes should look like.  If you have any questions about their costume please let me know.

The students will arrive at Stout around 5:30 and must be in their seats by 5:45 on Thursday, June 5th.

Potluck – Please bring finger foods to pass and drinks for your family.  Paper products will be provided by the PTA.

Volunteers are needed for set up and clean up before and after the potluck.  Please email me your name if you are available.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Thanks, Katie Keebler
