This Week’s News

Wow, we have a busy month coming up! Check out the dates to remember section below to see all the things we have going on!

Kindness – Our new character trait of the month is kindness. This is a perfect trait for us this month! We could use some extra kindness in our classroom this month. Please remind your student about the importance of being kind! I’ll be watching everyone this month and we will be picking a student to get the kindness award at the end of the month.

Dates to Remember:

10/7 – Serena is still star of the week because of the short week last week.

10/10 Pistons Assembly

Thursday, October 10th, 2024 The Detroit Pistons will host a SEL assembly for all at 1:30pm in the school gym. They did a great SEL lesson, with a lot of fun activities, and gave away prizes. After the assembly at my last school, I made a highlight reel, if anyone wants to see what to expect:

This is a great incentive for the students because they will also give me game tickets for students and families to attend one of their games. This assembly program rewards our students with time out of the classroom. The assembly includes a visit from Hooper, a Pistons Youth Coach, teacher vs. student competitions, prize giveaways, and character-building messaging.  Ms. Sparkle

10/10 – Madalyn visit – we will have a high school student visit our room to decide if she wants to be a teacher.

10/13 Wyatt Star of the Week

10/20 Isabella Star of the Week

10/22 – Fire Safety talk – a firefighter will visit our classroom and talk about fire safety. This is in preparation for a field trip to the Dearborn Smoke House on November 4th where 3rd graders learn what to do if there is a fire in their house.

10/23 Last Day to turn in all assignments – marking period ends on 10/25 this will be a 1/2 day.

10/28 – Picture day – put on your best outfit and your best smile!

Grades – These can be viewed on Parent Connect. You can access this by going to Dearborn Public Schools, click on the Parent Connect button near the top center of the page. If you don’t remember your username and password, just click forgot and it will send you an email with your information. Please check this weekly for your child’s progress and missing work. I allow one redo on most assignments until the week before grades are due. Papers that are “report card” grades will have a percentage or a number score with a circle around it near the top of the paper. A check on the right side of the paper means it is in the grade book, a check on the left side means I have seen it. A star is 100%.

Grading Scale in a circle at the top of a paper.

1 – 100%-95%

2- 94%-80%

3- 79%-60%

4-59%-0%

Papers – I am putting in a lot of grades this weekend, please check on Sunday for an update on what is missing. Please save all papers until the end of the marking period. Then if something goes missing, you can just return it for a grade, instead of having a redo.

Conferences and Marking Period is ending on October 25th – All assignments are due by October 23rd. Parent Teacher conferences will be on November 12th and 14th in the afternoon and evening. I will be sending a sign-up sheet soon.

Happy Labor Day

I hope everyone enjoyed their extra long weekend with their children. We are starting a new week tomorrow. I got to babysit Mrs. Polster’s monarch caterpillars and black swallowtail chrysalises. They are almost all chrysalises now, so we will get to observe a new stage on Tuesday.

Homework – Each night your student will come home with a planner, it will tell you the current night’s homework, which is usually a math page and reading a book for 20 minutes. I will be adding a short response to reading, writing assignment for homework in a couple of weeks. Please sign the planner so that I know that you have seen it and please ensure that your child completes their work. It is helpful if homework is done early right after school before fun activities so that students are more motivated to complete it. Students should never spend more than 60 minutes doing homework. If it is taking too long, please let me know and we will brainstorm ideas to make it shorter.

Lost or Forgotten homework – It sometimes happens that someone forgets to bring home their homework or they somehow lose it. If you have a printer it is available to print from the blog. Go to Homework on the right side. Hover over it and the list pops up. Click on Eureka Math Homework to find the directions for how to find and print the homework. Here is the link if you can’t find it. If you don’t have a printer then you follow the same directions and copy the answers on a piece of paper. This is also helpful if your student is absent from school, so that they can still complete their work.

Blog – Almost everything that you need is on the blog. Do a little exploring if you need something. If you can’t find it let me know in an email and I can help. My email is: keeblek@dearbornschools.org.

Parent Homework – Class Dojo and the Blog – I am very excited that 91% of families are signed up for Class Dojo. Only 2 families to go! It is harder to tell who signed up for the blog since there are not kid names attached to your emails. SO I would like to do a roll call to make sure I am talking to all families each week. If you get this blog post please go to Class Dojo and say “I got the blog post”. Then I will know who I need to get added to the blog! That’s your homework! Thanks!

Star of the Week – Starting September 9th we are starting Star of the Week. Evana will be our 1st Star of the Week. About every week we will have a new Star of the Week. This is a very special week for your child. They get to make a poster about themselves, get a Star of the Week crown, be the line leader, do sharing and bring in a special book and letter from their parents. I have started adding the students to our calendar on the blog so you can check your student’s date. I am going in alphabetical order. The date may change so check the calendar when your students date is getting closer. To learn more here is the Star of the Week page from the blog. If we have days off during the week or if your child is sick during their time I will extend their week to include the next week also.

Academics

Social Studies – We will begin working on Government in Social Studies. Students will get a Studies Weekly magazine each week and will have an online platform to do games and assessments.

ELA – We are working on the Benchmark Review and Routines. Each week students will get a pamphlet that will need to be completed by Friday. About every 3 weeks we will start a new unit magazine.

Math – This week we will be doing the following homework from their Apply books.

Tuesday – Lesson 4

Wednesday – Lesson 5

Thursday – Lesson 6

Friday – Lesson 7

If you ever have any questions, comments or concerns please contact me at keeblek@dearbornschools.org or message me on Class Dojo.
