Healthy Snack –

Students should bring in a healthy snack if they think they will need one during the day. We have a lot of material to cover in 3rd grade and so this year we will try letting student choose to eat snack when they are hungry. They will also get credit toward extra recess if they bring fruits/veggies for snack. They should not be bringing cookies, candy, soda, or chips unless it is a special occasion like a birthday.

Questions –

If you have any questions about anything, please send me a message on Class Dojo or email me at: keeblek@dearbornschools.org.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your long weekend!!

Parent Survey – Please take the Parent Survey to help me get to know your child.

Routines – Routines are an important part of a child’s life. It helps them feel in control if they know something will happen the same way everyday. We will start building these routines in school this week. Please spend this week helping your child to build similar routines at home. One important routine to getting ready for school the night before. Get homework done right after school before play or games. Put the homework in the backpack, and have a set location to keep it, so it is easy to find in the morning, pick out clothing the night before and decide about their lunch choice or pack the lunch the night before. Plan a calming activity before bed like yoga stretches, calm music or reading a story. Put electronics away at least an hour before bed time. Have a set time to brush teeth, take a bath and put on pajamas. Go to bed by 9 PM or sooner. 3rd graders need at least 10 hours of sleep for their growing bodies and minds. Preparing for school the night before will help things go smoothly in the morning and make it easy to come to school ready to learn rather than being upset about a hectic morning.

Math quizzes – It is important for 3rd graders to memorize their math facts. We will be working on this everyday. Each day we will have a short quiz on a specific math fact +1s, +2s, etc. Each time students pass a quiz they get a paper ice cream scoop to go on the wall. When everyone gets all their scoops for Addition we will have an ice cream party!! Then we will move to subtraction, multiplication and division. We need to be able to recall these quickly and easily without counting on fingers, this will help us as we get to more difficult math. Please spend a few minutes each night practicing for the next day’s quiz. You can use flash cards, computer games or just ask them math questions as you drive in the car.

Need Childcare on Early Release days?

Dearborn Public Schools is surveying parents who may need assistance with childcare when early release Tuesdays start in October.  English and Arabic versions of the survey are available for parents with students in grades kindergarten to eighth grade.

The district is still developing plans for how to assist parents on the days when students get out 90 minutes early.

Two options are currently being considered – a Kids Club style child care for $11 per student per early release or a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) option for $15 to $20 per student for each Tuesday.

The district is not able to provide free childcare when class is not in session.

Schools will use information from the parent survey to develop plans for how to assist families.

The first early release will be Oct. 10.
