Math Fact timed tests

I have tested all students on their ability level for math facts.  Tomorrow we will start having times test for math facts each week.  In order to pass the test and move to the next level the students must get a score of 90% or better in less than 4 minutes.  If you would like to practice at home, the tests can be found on my blog under the Lesson plans and Homework tab, then Math Facts.  Their facts should be memorized, this is very important part of doing well in higher level math problems.   If you have any questions about the process or your student’s level please let me know.  Below are the levels the students will start at:

Addition 0-5 Student # 2, 12, 13, 14, 15
Subtraction 0-5 Student # 1, 5, 7, 11
Multiplication 0-2 Student # 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 16
Division 0-5 Student #3

I’m sick

Dear Parents,

Unfortunately, I will be missing the field trip.  I have a stomach flu. The document below shows who is riding the bus ,who is driving and who you are chaperoning.

Field trips 2014-15

  • Please check with Bernadette in the office to make sure that all your chaperoning paperwork is in order.
  • The sub has a parent packet with a map for driving and where to park, a schedule and what to do about lunch.  This also tells who you are chaperoning.
  • After you check in with the sub please wait in the cafeteria until the bus arrives.  Drivers please don’t leave until we are sure everyone will fit on the bus.  There maybe people who need rides.
  • If you need to leave the museum early please let the sub know that you are taking your child.  You may not take other peoples children.
  • If you need to take your child when we arrive back at the school please let the sub know you are taking your child.
  • Take lots of pictures! We can share them with Shutterfly.

I am very disappointed that I am missing the trip.  It should be a wonderful day.  I hope everyone has fun!

Mrs. Katie Keebler

This Thursday’s field trip

Hi Everyone,

  • Below is the list of approved chaperones for the whole school.  If you are not on this list and have not given Ms. Bernadette your paperwork you will not be allowed to come with us on the trip on Thursday.
  • I also wanted to ask that all students either wear their Howe School T-shirt or any other red shirt.  This makes it easy to keep track of everyone.
  • Don’t forget everyone must bring a lunch.  There is no place to buy food at the museum.
  • If you would like to drive yourself and your student please let me know as soon as possible.  If you are driving with another parent your child may come with you also.  No students may ride in other people’s cars without their parents in the same car.
  • If you have any requests for who you would like to chaperone please let me know as soon as possible.  I will be making the chaperoning list tomorrow.

Field Trip Drivers

Please make sure that you have completed your chaperoning paperwork in the office!  I will be checking with Ms. Bernadette tomorrow to make sure everyone is complete.  If your paperwork is not complete you cannot chaperone.

Drivers needed-Since we have so little space on the bus we are asking parents if they would be willing to drive their cars and carpool with other parents.  You can even bring your own children in your car with you.

Everyone who is chaperoning on this trip please reply to this post and let me know how you will be getting to the trip.  Please post if you have room in your car for other adults.  I would like to know exactly who is driving so that I can get an accurate head count for the bus.

If you are still looking for a ride please use this blog to let everyone know so that we can find rides for all chaperones.

Field Trip and Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent-Teacher Conferences – If you missed signing up for a conference at the Open House, I have placed the sign-up sheet on the table outside my room.  Please sign up for November conferences at your earliest convenience.

Field Trip this Thursday, September 25th Hands-On Museum

  • Everyone must bring a lunch.  We only get a room to eat in. No food is sold at the Hands-on Museum.
  • Gift shop purchases are okay and up to the chaperone if they want to go there.  Your child may bring a small amount of money (less than $10 please).  They need to be responsible for their own money.

Chaperones – I am happy to have plenty of parents who wish to chaperone on this trip.

  • In order to chaperone you must fill out the chaperoning/volunteering paperwork in the office.  Please take care of this on Monday so we are all set for the trip on Thursday.
  • Also, I highly encourage parents to carpool together on this trip.  We have 3 classes going on the trip and the bus will be very full.  We will only have room for a very few amount of parents on the bus.   Feel free to post here on the blog if you are looking for a ride or would be willing to have a passenger in your car.
  • Below is the list of  students, if there is a yes by their name they are a chaperone.
  • Please let me know which student you would like to have in your group.  With 16 students and 9 chaperones you will only need to chaperone one other student than your own.
  • On Thursday, please come to the classroom at drop off  to let me know that you are here.  I will give you directions, schedule and who you are chaperoning.  Then please wait in the cafeteria until the bus arrives.
  • Please let me know if you are driving or carpooling so I know we have everyone taken care of for rides.

Homework: I had many questions about homework last night so I wanted to make sure everyone understood what everyone should be doing.
The students will have the following homework each week:
Reading: All children were given a reading log, they should be reading each night and filling out the back of the log on which reading strategies they used.
Writing: All students should have a writing journal at home.  They should write for 5 minutes each night about a topic of their choice.  They may keep this at home or share it with the class if they wish.
Spelling: Every student has a Tic-Tack-Toe spelling paper.  At the bottom are the words.  They must choose at least 3 activities to complete at home.  Parents will check their work and initial when the activities are complete.  They need to turn in the Tic-tac-toe with parent initials only on Thursdays.   We will use these papers to give the spelling tests on Fridays.  We had several students who didn’t turn in the spelling homework and got a zero for the assignment.  They student’s who didn’t turn it in are students #4, 7, 9, 12,16.  If you turn them in next week you may have credit for the assignment.
Math:  All students should be working on memorizing their math facts.  2nd graders should have addition and subtraction facts memorized.  3rd graders should have multiplication and division facts memorized by the end of the year.  If they get them all memorized sooner we will start process sheets.  If 2nd graders want to go higher they may.  I have passed out the password to get on the Everyday Math Online website for the 3rd graders.  The 2nd graders will get theirs from Mrs. Poster.   This website is a good resource for extra math practice at home.
Study Island:  I will be creating Study Island accounts for all students.  This is an optional great website for extra practice in Math, Language Arts, Science or Social Studies.

Open House and other information

Open House – It was wonderful seeing everyone at the open house tonight.  Thank you to everyone who replied to my blog.  Prizes will be given out to every student who commented on the No Peanuts blog.   I wanted to clarify to everyone that you are not saying that your child has a peanut allergy, you are just letting me know that you saw the post on peanut allergies.  If you haven’t replies yet, just go to the post before this one and write  your child’s name and no peanuts, then I can connect your child with your email and they get a prize.

Picture day – I wanted to let everyone know that I left directions for the substitute teacher on Wednesday where she could find the picture day money.  But I guess she didn’t understand.  None of the picture day money or forms were given to the photographer.  I have told our secretary and she will contact the photographer about retaking the pictures for our class.  I will let you know when they will be retaken.

Field Trip- Permission slips for our field trip are due by tomorrow, 9/19.  I am still missing 4 slips.  I have everyone except student number 7, 8, 13 and 15.  I refer to student’s by their number in blog posts to help preserve your privacy.  If you don’t know your student’s number, ask your student, they all know their number.

I have several student who turned in permission slips and checked the box that said they would like to attend the trip with their child but only sent money for 1 person.  The people who need to pay for a second person are 5, 10, 14, 16

I have had 9 parents say that they would like to join us on the trip but I will only have room for about 7 adults from all 3 classes, so to be fair only 1-2 parents from my class can take the bus.  Please make arrangements to carpool with other families.  If you have questions about parking I posted information on my blog from 9/13.

Peanut Allergy

I have been informed that we have a student with a peanut allergy in this class.  Peanut allergies can be very serious, even life threatening.  Therefore, this year our classroom will be a peanut-free zone.  After discussing it with the parent this may also include other legumes and nuts, I will let you know when I have more details.

PRIZE FOR YOUR STUDENT -To make sure everyone got the message and to test if everyone is getting the blog, please reply to this post and write your child’s name and NO PEANUTS.  I do this each year to see if everyone is able to read my blog.  Your student will get a prize at school when you post.  For example my daughters name is Stephanie so I will post this:  Stephanie – NO PEANUTS.

Thanks for you help!

I look forward to seeing everyone tonight (Thursday, September 18th)5:00-6:00 for our Open House
