SNOW DAY!  – I hope everyone stays warm and safe on our snow day.  Try your best to stay off the roads if you can.

Short week – We had a very short week with the school being closed twice.  Because of this the SRA and Towers will not be due this week.  I did however ask the students to take their spelling test yesterday in case school was closed.  Only about 1/2 of them got it done so please make sure your student has all their spelling activities done at home including the test.

Online Portfolios – Students are learning a new program this week.  It is an online portfolio called Mahara.  This allows them to put their learning goals online and then show artifacts or evidence that they are improving.  They can also do an online journal, students can type, add pictures, videos or sound clips.  This portfolio can stay with them all the way thru high school.  It will be a great way to watch your student grow academically.

Online Reading Log – I would like each student to do one entry in Mahara the online reading log this week.  Here is how you log in and add a journal entry:

  1. Go to www.dearbornschools.org
  2. Click on Resources for students
  3. Click on ePortolios
  4. Sign in with Lunch card number and birthday (mmddyyyy)
  5. Under My Portfolio click on My Third Grade Year
  6. Click on Edit this page
  7. Click on reading log
  8. Click New entry
  9. In the title section type the title and author of the book.  Don’t forget to capitalize.
  10. Then in the box below type your entry.
  11. Below the box click save and they I can see the entry.

This will be an new options for reading logs.  Student can do between 1 and 5 entries a week.  An entry should be 3-5 sentences about the story.  It would be great it students used their Depth of Knowledge questions in their reading logs.  I will add the questions stems to Google Classroom so students can use them any time.  Make sure to ask and answer the question.  Here are the questions stems:

Depth of Knowledge (DOK3) Questions Stems

  • How is ____related to ____?
  • What conclusions can you draw?
  • How would you adapt ____ to create a different___?
  • How would you test that?
  • Can you predict the outcome if____?
  • What is the best answers?  Why?
  • What conclusion can be drawn from these three texts?
  • What  is your interpretation of this text?  Support your rationale.
  • How would you describe the sequence of ___?
  • Can you elaborate on the reason___?

Field Trip – We had a GREAT trip today to the Historical Museum and Orchestra hall.  We were able to get tours at both locations and the kids seem to  have a really great time.  Afterward lots of them said it was the best field trip ever.   Thank you to all the chaperones who took time out of your busy days to come help us.  I will try to send some pictures this weekend.  If any parents have pictures they would like me to share with the group please share them to my email keeblek@dearbornschools.org.

Missing Assignments – We have several students who have missing assignments already and we are only 5 days into the new marking period.  This marking period I will be putting a zero for each missing assignment on Friday.  They are still due and I need them to be turn in to keep your grades up.  Remember anything they do not complete in class they are responsible to complete at home.  Make sure students know that school work should come before playing, sports or other tutoring programs.

Star of the Week next week is Mia.

Class News and reminders

Spelling test – Remember we will be doing the spelling test tomorrow since we will be gone most of the day on Friday.  Please make sure that your students have tried the practice test at least once by tonight (more times if they did not get 100% the first time).

Reading projects – I have been getting some wonderful projects from some students, however others are not doing as great a job.  I would like the Reading Projects to be about the same amount of writing as a Reading log.  So I have decided to include some guidelines for the projects.  All projects must include a writing element, the author’s name and the title of the book.  1 paragraph will count as 1 day of the Reading log.  So if the draw a picture and write 1 paragraph that counts as 1 day on the reading log and they need to do 4 more entries.

Field trip – Please wear your school t-shirt or a red shirt on Friday.  Please talk to your students about good field trip behavior for Friday.  Remind them they are representing their school, classroom and family and we all expect them to do their best.  Parents please remember no talking on cell phones during the trip, we need parents to help watch all the kids and remind them to be on their best behavior.  Thanks for taking your time to join us.

1/2 Day Tomorrow

Remember tomorrow is a 1/2 day dismissal at 11:45

It is also the very late time to turn in missing work.  Make sure your student has done all their online spelling and they are ready for the test tomorrow.  Please check parent connect for missing work.  Be sure you have the “Show All” box checked at the top to see all the assignments.  Anything not turn in by tomorrow will become a zero in the grade book which will quickly bring their grade down to a 3 or 4.
