BoxTops Mailbox – we are looking for a mildly handy individual to help repurpose the BoxTop Mailbox into a school-wide mailbox for all the students. Can you (or someone you know) lend us a hand? Email the PTA at howe.schoolpta@yahoo.comMontessori MomentTerm to ponder – practical life skillsPractical life activities are applicable for all ages. They include self-care and care of the environment. They range from brushing their hair and making toast to something as complicated as making dessert, doing yard work or even developing a resume and making a business plan in the elementary or middle school years. Practicing these skills at home will foster confident, self-sufficient adults ready to tackle life’s bigger challenges. From Maria Montessori herself…“Repetition is the secret to perfection, and this is why the exercises are connected with the common activities of daily life. If a child does not set a table for a group of people who are really going to eat, if he does not have real brushes for cleaning, and real carpets to sweep whenever they are used, if he does not himself have to wash and dry dishes and glasses he will never attain any real ability. And if he does not live a social life based on proper education. He will never attain that graceful naturalness which is so attractive in our children. ”

Popcorn Friday – will be this Friday, help support the PTA and get popcorn for your student for just $1.

Cold Weather Clothing – it is getting cold very fast please remember to have your child dress for the weather. Help them find the temperature the night before or before school. Here are the guidelines for dressing, I have linked the document in case you want to print it and hang it at home for your child to refer to:

Howe Winter Guidelines

Outdoor Weather

Students go outside for recess two or three times a day, even during the winter months. We use the following guidelines to determine when it is safe for students to be outside. To make this determination, we use the “feels like” temperature (wind chill) as reported by the National Weather Service. Please make sure your child is prepared with the necessary outerwear.

TEMPERATURE GUIDELINES (Feels like Temperature/Wind Chill) :

  • Below 20 degrees – we do not go outside
  • 20 degrees or higher- we go outside

Clothing

During the months of December through March, students should bring boots every day as there are many areas on the playground that can get quite snowy and/or muddy. Labeling items with your child’s first and last name can help us to return any lost items. We expect that students will wear the following winter gear when heading outside for recess.

CLOTHING GUIDELINES:

  • 50-60 degrees: Long sleeves/sweaters
  • 40-50 degrees: Jacket/coat
  • 30-40 degrees: Winter jacket, hat and mittens/gloves and covered legs (i.e tights, jeans, pants)
  • Below 30 and if snowy: Full set of snow gear to play in the snow (winter jacket, snow pants, hat, mittens, and boots)
  • December – March: Bring boots and shoes daily

Students who do not wear snow pants and boots will not be able to play in the snow.

Students who do not bring boots will still go outdoors, but are expected to stay on the blacktop.
