Next week’s Star of the Week – Skye

Star of the Weekstar

Every student will have their turn to be the Star of the Week.  This a week where your child will get special privilege and have the chance for us to get to know more about them and let them really “shine!”.

While your child is the Star, each day of the week will consist of an exciting event or activity to honor him or her and to help us get to know our special classmate.

Monday: Sharing Sack and Poster of pictures: Please help your child collect special items from home with which to fill a small bag (the “sharing sack”), and send it back to school with your child on Monday to share with his or her classmates. Try to encourage your child to choose items that have some sort of meaning rather than just a collection of toys. Also, please have your child decorate a poster board with pictures of him or herself from babyhood to the present. If you did a poster last year, you may use the same one, and add new pictures if you’d like. We’ll display the poster in a place of honor on our class bulletin board.

*Tuesday: Favorite Book: Your star student brings one of his or her favorite picture books to read to the class (or have the teacher read to the class) at our class meeting.

*Wednesday: Parent Letter: Parents, you will write a letter to the class telling us how special your child is to you. Send the letter in a sealed envelope to school with your child, and I will read the letter to the class at class meeting. The content of the letter is up to you, but you may want to choose from one of the following ideas: describe special or funny stories about your child for the class to hear, write a silly or serious poem about your child, tell us some neat things we may not know about your child, send silly or special pictures with a letter describing the pictures, or write a short story with your child as the main character. You may also send a special video for the class to watch if you choose. (Sometimes parents have taped messages or choose to send in a funny baby video for the class to see.)

*Thursday: Lunch Buddy:If possible, join your child in the cafeteria for a special lunch on this day. You may also choose to invite a sibling or a favorite relative to be your child’s lunch buddy. You can have the buddy be a surprise or let your child know ahead of time. If you are unable to make it during our lunch period (11:15 – 11:45), please let me know and I will plan a special lunch for your child instead. You can bring lunch from a favorite restaurant to the cafeteria, or you can order lunch at school. Please let me know ahead of time if you are planning to order a school lunch so that I can place your order.

Friday: Star Friends: Your star student will be presented with a friendship poster created by his or her classmates. The poster will include the Star’s picture, surrounded by compliments written by his or her classmates.

*The events planned for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday can be swapped in order to accommodate your personal schedule if you are planning to be a lunch buddy during the week.

Email me if you have further questions.

Week 10 spelling sort

Quizlet – I have added new language Quizlets to the class.   I have added synonyms, antonyms, homophones and prefixes.  I would like to start testing the student in school with the Quizlet.  If you have not set up an account for your student yet please join Quizlet and set one up this weekend so that I can start testing on Monday.  When you pick a username please include their first name or student number so that  I can tell who they are.  Please send me your student’s username and password so that I can help them log in at school.

Parent Connect – You should have all received a copy of your PIN to get in to Parent Connect.  Please try to access your child’s account before your conference.  This way I can help you solve any problems at conferences.  Please check on a daily basis to see if your student has missing assignments.

Helping to feed people in need- Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger and was created by The Imagine Render Group. The basic premise is simple: Potters and other craftspeople, educators and others work with the community to create handcrafted bowls. Guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. The money raised is donated to an organization working to end hunger and food insecurity.  Your students have all created bowls to help raise money to feed people in need.  They recieved an invitation to  attend  a fundraising event to support the hunger.  If you arrive early you can donate and get the bowl that they made.

Filming Students – Meghann Mealbach from CDTV would like to visit the Art Room during Ms. Nellie’s class Monday morning, 10:30-11:15 and Ms. Keebler’s class on Thursday morning 8:50-9:35 in order to take publicity shots for the upcoming Empty Bowls Dinner on November 24.  She may also take some video, and could be doing some interviewing of students for a story.  The following students will not be filmed because you asked us not to or I didn’t get your concent form: Waad,, Leah, Hassan, Mahdi, and Zahraa.

Homework issues – I had several parents say they were struggling with getting their students to complete their homework.  Here is an article that give some suggestions on making it easier. Homework 1-2-3+Magic+Parenting+Newsletter+-+November+2014
