School Begins tomorrow! – I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow at 9 am sharp. Please send in the 2 composition books, a backpack and send back the communication folder in case there are any new notes. Please send in a box of tissues, if you can. We always get a lot of runny noses. These are all the supplies that are needed. I will supply all the rest.

Dismissal for tomorrow and each day – Upper elementary students (3rd, 4th and 5th grades) dismiss at the back door at 12:05. Enter the school parking lot past the office parking lot and drive all the way around the building, they parking lot road curves to the right, keep following the curve to the last parking lot. All younger siblings in Kindergarten, 1st or 2nd grade will line up with us and walk out to the back door with their older siblings. Normal dismissal will be at 3:55.

Please email if your child have younger siblings that will be coming out back with us. Ms. Angela already sent me a list of the kindergarten students that will join us. My email is keeblek@dearbornschools.org.

Blog – Please make sure you are receiving my blog messages. They will usually come out on Sunday. If you are not getting messages please let me know. This is an important part of our communication together. If you are not reading the blog each week you will be missing a lot of information.

Class Dojo – Make sure that you are signed up for ClassDojo. This allows us to text each other with quick messages. I will also use it to send pictures, messages, reminders and help your students daily behaviors. If you haven’t sign up click this link and follow the directions to sign up. Thank you to the 66% that have already signed up!!

Parent Survey – Please take the Parent Survey to help me get to know your child.

Routines – Routines are an important part of a child’s life. It helps them feel in control if they know something will happen the same way everyday. We will start building these routines in school this week. Please spend this week helping your child to build similar routines at home. One important routine to getting ready for school the night before. Get homework done right after school before play or games. Put the homework in the backpack, and have a set location to keep it, so it is easy to find in the morning, pick out clothing the night before and decide about their lunch choice or pack the lunch the night before. Plan a calming activity before bed like yoga stretches, calm music or reading a story. Put electronics away at least an hour before bed time. Have a set time to brush teeth, take a bath and put on pajamas. Go to bed by 9 PM or sooner. 3rd graders need at least 10 hours of sleep for their growing bodies and minds. Preparing for school the night before will help things go smoothly in the morning and make it easy to come to school ready to learn rather than being upset about a hectic morning.

Math quizzes – It is important for 3rd graders to memorize their math facts. We will be working on this everyday. Each day we will have a short quiz on a specific math fact +1s, +2s, etc. Each time students pass a quiz they get a paper ice cream scoop to go on the wall. When everyone gets all their scoops for Addition we will have an ice cream party!! Then we will move to subtraction, multiplication and division. We need to be able to recall these quickly and easily without counting on fingers, this will help us as we get to more difficult math. Please spend a few minutes each night practicing for the next day’s quiz. You can use flash cards, computer games or just ask them math questions as you drive in the car.

Need Childcare on Early Release days?

Dearborn Public Schools is surveying parents who may need assistance with childcare when early release Tuesdays start in October.  English and Arabic versions of the survey are available for parents with students in grades kindergarten to eighth grade.

The district is still developing plans for how to assist parents on the days when students get out 90 minutes early.

Two options are currently being considered – a Kids Club style child care for $11 per student per early release or a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) option for $15 to $20 per student for each Tuesday.

The district is not able to provide free childcare when class is not in session.

Schools will use information from the parent survey to develop plans for how to assist families.

The first early release will be Oct. 10.
