Multiplication facts – it is very important that your student memorize their multiplication facts. This is a crucial part of doing well in math. We will spend time on this in school but it is very helpful for you to do flash cards at home or have them play math games that help them memorize their facts. They should already have their addition facts to 10 memorized. I notice some students are still struggling with these and could use extra practice at home. Knowing their facts makes it much easier to do the more difficult concepts that we will be covering in 3rd grade and beyond like the distributive property that we have been working on in unit 1.

Academics this week – We will continue our ELA unit on Animal Adaptations we will begin talking about our Animal Research project due at the end of the month. The new spelling words and grammar pamphlet was sent home on Friday. We are studying long a words and verb tenses this week. Please help your student practice their words for their spelling test on Friday. We continue our unit called Animals through time in science. We will be doing a pretend fossil dig to try to discover why ocean animals fossils could be found in the middle of a corn field in Illinois thousands of miles from the ocean. In Math we will finish taking our Module 1 test and start on Module 2 – Place Value and Problem Solving with Units of Measure.

Birthdays – There are lots of birthdays in October. I would like to remind everyone if you are sending in a birthday treat it needs to be store bought AND individually wrapped. We have 21 children in our class. Please remember this is a NUT Free classroom. Please do NOT send in any foods containing nuts to the classroom. Also please remember that you are not allowed to pass out birthday invitation in class unless you are inviting the ENTIRE class. Children get very sad when they are excluded from birthday parties. Please pass out party invitations privately. Thanks!!
