We’re on an Adventure-Week 3 March 30-April 3

I am so proud of all of my students and their families! My entire class has been working hard! 100% of my students have been meeting their goals and corresponding with me weekly! My students are turning into second graders right before my eyes! This week our adventure begins with new spelling words ( Lesson 26), a new site for reading books (EPIC), and a fun place to learn (MOBY MAX)! Let our adventure begin!

We still want our students to continue learning at home and we are asking our families to do the following:
I-Ready for a minimum of 2 hours per week.
Read “good fit ” books (K-2) 20 minutes daily. If you are running out of books in your book bag visit the scholastic site for 10 new books per week! Be sure to log them into your logs! Scholastic books: https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/support/learnathome.html
-At least 1 lesson per day on Zearn (math)

NEW THIS WEEK:

The new reading site for books is called EPIC. I will be sending each family and invitation to join. It will come in an email. Parents need to join using their email address and create an account with their own password. It will ask your child about the types of things they like to read about and then give them many books to choose from. Some books are on tape, some have short quizzes, some are chapter books. I will receive a list of the books each child reads and how long they spent reading, so you do not need to log them into your reading log if you use this site. Later, I can also assign books. Right now all I would like is for the children to enjoy reading! I think they will love the variety of good fit books here. I will receive a confirmation if you are successful in joining. Let me know if you like this book site or if you are having trouble signing up.

Lesson 26 Spelling List Many of you sent me your score last week and you did great! This week the pattern is Long o, VCe pattern. Children may choose which list they want to study this week. Let them study any way they wish. Let them be creative! Use markers, colored pencils, drawings, make their own word search puzzles. Give them the test on Friday. Record and keep everything in a folder. The Bonus words are: spoke, hole, nose, hose, bone

List 1: note tone chose code broke

List 2: remote compose trombone sunstroke decode

Dolch words: only hold keep drink myself

I hope you will continue learning on –Mystery Science: https://mysteryscience.com/school-closure-planning

goNoodle and writing in your journal with the ideas given to you last week

The last new site I will suggest for you this week is Moby Max. Moby Max can be accessed through the Dearborn Public Schools student portal, just like I-Ready. Click on CLEVER and look for the bright green box with a whale. This site contains both language arts and math activities. This is only a suggestion for students who want to take an adventure and try some new learning. I will also receive each child’s time spent on these activities.

Finally, I would like to thank all of my parents, grandparents, and guardians at this time. I know it has been hard. Many of you have been juggling work at home pressures, home schooling, loss of employment, having worries about paying the bills and the safety of elderly family members, along with struggling with everyday tasks, like grocery shopping and keeping your family healthy and safe, that have gotten harder to do because of the virus situation. Your children are very lucky to have you. They are all working so hard and their time spent on their lessons and the progress they have made on the lessons these last 2 weeks has been amazing! Thank you for making their education an important part of their daily routines. You are all a part of my family. If there is anything I can do for you or your family, please contact me. Please be safe, stay healthy, and give your child a big hug from Mrs. Slater! I am hopeful that we will be back together again at Snow School real soon!

Ahoy Sailors! Week 2 Assignments

Meet the crew of the USS Slater!
Mazen joined the crew later, and we are so glad he is with us!

It is all hands on deck. We are entering uncharted territory! Put on your sailor hats and get ready for week 2. We can do this together! This week I am adding the next spelling lesson 25, along with a fun movement/exercise site and some writing ideas. Have fun learning this week!

We still want our students to continue learning at home and we are asking our families to do the following:
I-Ready for a minimum of 2 hours per week.
Read “good fit ” books (K-2) 20 minutes daily. If you are running out of books in your book bag visit this site for 10 books per week! I especially liked the 2 books about stars and the night sky! Be sure to log them into your logs! Scholastic books: https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/support/learnathome.html
-At least 1 lesson per day on Zearn (math)

-In addition, this week Spelling lesson 25: Pattern long i, spelled i_e (VCe pattern)

Let the children pick which list they want to study. They can be creative on how they want to study the words each day. Write the words with colored pencils or markers, write a sentence using the words, draw a spring picture with the words hidden, find definitions in a dictionary. Have fun! Parents can give the spelling test on Friday or Saturday. The bonus words are: time, five, nice, like, lime. Keep the tests in a folder to turn in.

List 1: drive, slice, dime, wise, mine

List 2: arrive, advice, slime, stripe, canine

Dolch words: seven, today, about, six, never

-The fun exercise site is GoNoodle, let the whole family get up and move. Some of the activities get you moving, and some of the activities are calming and stress relievers! Have fun with it!

GoNoodle is awesome fun for the whole family! We love it when everyone does our dances, sings our songs, and plays GoNoodle together. It’s a daily ritual in most elementary schools across the U.S. (and many around the world) and we think it’s a super fun thing you can do with your little ones every day too!  Plus, we have another app called “GoNoodle Games” that is an awesome way to get your kids moving in front of the screen. Sign up for our emails and in the days and weeks ahead, we will send you weekly fresh, fun ideas for you and your kids well-beyond GoNoodle. Sign up to get these on the Good Energy page.

-Finally, writing! Here are some writing ideas from Journal Buddies.com These are only suggestions. I always hear children say, “I don’t know what to write about!” I hope these ideas will help!

Boost your kids' creativity! Promote imagination and adventure with these new journal prompts and creative writing story starters. Regardless of whether they write silly, scary, or serious stories, students will love the chance to write something unique!
These narrative writing prompts for first graders offer a great entry point for young writers to begin learning about storytelling.

Technology at home

If there is anyone in my class who does not have the technology in their homes to access the I-Ready and Zearn programs, please email me and I will try to put you in contact with someone who can assist you. I have also heard on the news that Comcast can help provide free internet assistance for students who are in need of help during this troubled time. I still have a few students who have not logged into I-Ready and Zearn daily, and I am reaching out to any family who needs help, since our learning is now taking place on line.

I want to thank all of my families who have been keeping up with daily lessons on line. I have been keeping track of times and lessons being done. You and your children are amazing! I miss you all!

Please stay safe, take care of each other, and don’t forget to READ!

At home learning

Hello to my students and their families! I hope you are all well and working hard at home! I have been monitoring the I-Ready and Zearn web site and see that more than half of you are doing your required lessons each day. I have found 2 more sites that you might enjoy.

For reading I found:

https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/support/learnathome.html

For science I found: https://mysteryscience.com/school-closure-planning

Please continue doing your lessons on I-Ready and Zearn every day. Remember to read your bookbag books or try the scholastic books above and the mystery science that I know you all love!

I will keep looking for more sites and I will monitor your progress every day! Don’t forget to do some writing. I can’t wait to read all of your wonderful stories!

Letter From Mrs. Alcodray, Snow Principal

Message from Amal Alcodray, Principal Snow School

March 13, 2020 by Amal Alcodray

Dear Snow Families,

The Michigan Department of Education MDE has recently given Snow a school grade of letter “A”!  Our students are performing and we want to continue to soar! During this time of shut down, we are going to work hard to continue student learning.  We are asking all Snow families to do the following:

-iReady for a minimum of 2 hours per week.

-Read “Good fit” books. (K-2) 20 min daily, (3-5) 30-45  min daily.

-At least 1 lesson per day on Zearn.

-4th and 5th grade Khan Academy for 20 minutes daily.

-Grades 2-5 will receive assignments via Google Classroom.

There will be additional assignments based on classrooms/grades. Teachers and support staff will be monitoring student learning.

Please check your emails regularly! This will be the main method of communication between school and home. Phone calls will be made as necessary.

Due to the fact that we are moving to online learning for this period of shut down, please limit recreational screen time! (Social media, YouTube, video games, television, etc…)

Teacher Blogs:

iReady, Moby Max, Khan Academy and Google Classroom all can be accessed through Clever.  Directions to login will be posted on the Snow blog.

I will make announcements as I receive them on the Snow blog.  Thank you in advance for supporting our students!

Sincerely,

Amal Alcodray

Snow Principal

A message from Mrs. Alcodray

Dear Snow Community,

With confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Michigan, it is imperative that we educate ourselves regarding the FACTS behind the virus.  Please access Wayne County Health Department at the following URL for updates:

https://www.waynecounty.com/departments/hhvs/wellness/novel-coronavirus-information.aspx

At Snow, we are taking measures to increase focus on cleaning and disinfecting all surfaces including desks, floors, bathrooms, door handles and cafeteria.  The kitchen will no longer have open salad bar and share tables. We are encouraging students to wash their hands frequently and thoroughly as good hygiene practices help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

If your child is sick, please keep them at home.  Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.  Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 30 seconds. Use alcohol based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and warm water are not available. Disinfect frequently used surfaces as much as possible.

Please reach out to me if you have any questions/concerns 313-827-6250.

Sincerely,

Amal Alcodray

Indoor Lineup

On days we have indoor lineup, we will no longer be lining up in the gym. Students instead, will enter the building and sit outside their classrooms. Safety patrols and staff will be stationed throughout the building for supervision. This helps with keeping the gym floor dry for our gym classes. Thank you in advance.

Thank you,

Amal Alcodray

Halloween Parade

Dear Snow Families,

This year for Halloween , students will be participating in an all school parade.  We have 7 stations set up where students will march down the hallways and stop for a treat at each station.  We are still looking for donations for treats including (peanut free) candy, pencils, rings, erasers, stickers…

We are asking all students NOT to eat candy at school, but to take their treats home.

Just a reminder that costumes can be worn.  No masks, minimal makeup,  and no weapons.

Thank you,

Snow Team
