Learning Labs

Learning labs are still happening by zoom in the afternoon! Please make sure you know your child’s day and time. Over 1500 books have been read on Epic books by my students since we began school! This has totaled over 187 hours of reading! I am so proud of my students! Remember, if you want to read into the evening (after 4:00pm) on Epic books you need to respond to the email invite that I sent to you. This will allow you to read a selection of books for free in the evening. Epic books is usually only free during school hours. Let me know if you need me to resend the invitation to you. This week I have assigned books on how to write an opinion paper, government and U. S. symbols. Those are our next big topics in our new Benchmark magazine. Keaton is our Top Reader of the Week! Material Pick up on Friday, November 13th

Learning Labs

Learning Labs are remote starting this week

Please use the same link that you log in with during the morning zoom. The times for learning labs will remain the same as last week. If you are unsure of your time, please ask me after our zoom session in the morning.

New Book and Material Pick Up

On Wednesday, October 28 from 1:00-4:00. I will be passing out new books and materials that the students will be needing for the next two weeks at the basketball court back doors. If you could kindly stop by to pick up the materials that would be greatly appreciated. If you have any work from September or October packets that need to be turned in, you can drop it off then. There will be no Learning Labs that day only due to the material pick up in the afternoon. Students may read their new book, The Biggest Pumpkin and work on the activities that go with the story in the packet during learning lab time that day.

Friday, October 30-During Morning Zoom

In the spirit of Halloween, students may wear their Halloween costumes during Morning Zoom on Friday, October 30. As always please make sure they are appropriate for school.

Schoology

Please be sure to check the Schoology site for any old assignments or discussion questions to complete. I have not been assigning many discussion questions lately. We have been practicing responding to them in our notebook and discussing them during zoom. I do post all of the assignments daily in ELA and Math along with my lesson plan chart. I always post a discussion question on Monday so that you can tell me your child’s Spelling Test Score. A few students have not submitted their test scores. Any missing assignments or discussion questions on Schoology will become zeros when I do my report card grades at the end of October.

Our learning labs began last week. Thank you parents for bringing and picking the children up on time. When your child attends the lab, please have them bring their red folder containing completed work. They can also bring their fish folder from last week containing all their informational writing about penguins with their blue notebook. Also, have the children bring their bookbag so that I can give them different books to read. Thank you for keeping calm and being so supportive to me. We will keep on sailing through Second Grade together!

It is also found in Schoology on the ELA Reading course and Math course for each day. Please send me your spelling score in Monday’s discussion question on Schoology. Scores will turn into zeros if you do not respond. Please do your best to go back and complete any assignments and discussion questions from weeks past in Schoology, report cards are coming soon.

Readers Are Leaders!

Learning Labs

We are entering a new phase of our school year. Our learning labs will begin this week! I have grouped my students into reading groups for learning labs. I have scheduled each group to come into school during the afternoon. Just a friendly reminder to enter through the doors by the office where students will be temperature checked. All students also must wear a mask. A permission slip will be provided for you to fill out for your child to allow them to participate in learning labs. If you could fill in out that would greatly be appreciated and if you could be at the door at pick up time that would help keep students moving and keep them at a safe distance. When students come for learning labs this week, please have them bring their book bag and journal. We are all looking forward to learning labs and practicing our reading strategies together!

Second Grade Activities and Zoom Packets

 Keep all of the September worksheets in the red folder to be collected at a later date. I handed out the October packets, (A zoom packet and Second Grade October activities packet ) to each child when they came to test with me last week. All of this work, it looks like a lot, will take us up to the end of October. Please keep them in the red folder so they are there ready to use during our zoom lessons or learning labs to help support our math and reading lessons.

Week of September 28-October 2

We have done a lot of testing for DRA levels and the NWEA reading assessment. We will start the NWEA Math test this week. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday in the afternoon after our Zoom meeting. I will be calling to set up a time for your child to take the test. The NWEA Reading and Math Assessment is required by the state and students usually take it three times a year.

Over 500 books have been read on Epic books by students since we have been in school! When the children come to take their Math NWEA test this week they will also get their login for Raz Kids another great reading resource!

Schoology

Please go to Schoology to find the plans for the week and any discussion questions to answer. We are all still learning how to submit answers, so always check to see if there are any assignments in the margin posted for you. I am still learning how to grade and put content onto the platform. You will notice, I put the benchmark materials into a black folder. Soon, I will be assigning leveled books and worksheets from our new reading and math programs for the children to complete.

Week of September 21-25

Welcome back to another week of learning! Everyone is getting used to the virtual zoom lessons and is doing a great job with them. I look forward to seeing the students this week, in person in the afternoon on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday during their scheduled time to start NWEA testing. We will wear masks and socially distance with only 1-3 children at a time. If your child still needs to schedule a time I will be contacting you on Monday. Our virtual zoom lessons will continue this week.

Schoology

I am now posting some practice assignments and discussion questions in the ELA reading folders on Schoology. I am still learning so please be patient with me. Try to submit your answers and I am learning how to grade them. I also posted assignments in the Math folder, but their is nothing to submit, just keep your work in your workbooks. The schedule can be downloaded and printed if you would like a copy. Visit Schoology each day and check the folder to see what to do. Also your Special Classroom teachers courses. They will be posting their assignments too.

Epic Books

Great reading this week! Our class has read 250 books since we began school! Please read daily for at least 15 minutes. Keep on reading! Also when students come for NWEA testing this week I will be giving them their Plants and Animals in Their Habitats Magazine for reading. We will be reading through the stories together during our Zoom lessons. Please have the children put them in their red folder so they will have them ready to read.

Zearn

When students come in this week for NWEA testing I will be giving them their log in card for Zearn which will support their daily math lessons during Zoom. Working on Zearn for 15 minutes a day is another way students can build their math skills. I will also be giving them centimeter cubes. They will need them as we begin Module 2-Measurement.

Week of September 14-18

Welcome back to another week of our virtual learning voyage. Last week we practiced our zoom lessons with some moments of rough seas, but hopefully this week will be smooth sailing!

The schedule below is my plan for the week. Our morning zoom begins at 9:00am and will end at 11:45am. I have posted Special Classes found on Schoology and independent work for this week.

Thank you second grade parents for making individual appointments in the afternoon, for your child so they can be assessed in reading (DRA). I will be finishing those up this week.

Epic Books

To support my student’s reading at home, we will be using the Epic Books site. Every day I will be expecting the students to read online for 15 minutes. There are many books to choose from, so this week enjoy reading!

I am able to see the student activity and a log of their reading times and choices of books! Soon, I will be assigning books to correspond with our Social Studies and Science lessons.

Epic School: Students use Epic school during the school, 7am-4pm local time, M-F. During school hours students can log into Epic School from school or home with our class code, and read between 7am -4pm.

Epic Free: Students use after school, after 4pm local time, students can access a selection of books on Epic Free for up to 2 hours/week when parents sign up with an email address. I will be sending you an email invitation. If you would like to use this site after school hours, respond to the invitation using the same email address that I send the invite to.

The class code is the same. The directions for logging into the site is 1. Go to www.getepic.com/students

Download the instructions below on how students log into Schoology. Many of you have already logged into special area classes this week on Schoology and did a great job!

Please visit second grade math and reading (ELA) folders on Schoology this week under the course “2nd Grade” You will see my picture. Help your child visit the math and reading (ELA) folders to try some of the activities posted there this week each day and try to submit their answers for the reading activities. The schedule for the week and the zoom link we have been using is also posted in both the math and reading folders. Don’t forget to visit the special area teacher’s folders for their activities this week. Remember to take things slow, we are all learning Schoology together.

Week of September 8th-11th

It was a pleasure to meet and welcome back all of my second grade students and parents last week during orientation and supply pick up and answer any questions you may have had about the start of the new school year! I hope the information was helpful to you.

Schedule A Time To Read

I will be calling each parent on Tuesday, September 8th to schedule a time to bring their child into school, this week to read in the afternoon (30 minute time slot) with their teacher. This will help students and teachers to get reading groups and learning labs started on September 21st.

I am looking forward to starting this new voyage together in Second Grade!
