Ukuleles have arrived at Oakman!

Oakman 5th graders are learning how to hold, strum, pluck and play chords on the ukulele.  Ukulele is a string instrument with 4 strings, GCEA, and is similar to the guitar, a 6-stringed instrument.  Our students will learn how to pluck strings and play several different chords.  After learning chords, our 5th graders will be playing along with popular (school appropriate) songs.  We are all looking forward to this awesome opportunity to learn how to play a new instrument!

There are several different sizes of ukulele, as seen below.  Our students will be playing soprano ukuleles, one of the higher voices in the ukulele family.

Keep a lookout for more information about our ukulele unit in the music classroom!  If you would like to purchase a ukulele for your child, I would highly recommend the Makala Soprano ukulele from West Music.  Here is the website if you would like to take a look: https://www.westmusic.com/guitars-folk/ukuleles/303685

There is no need to purchase a ukulele for your child as I will provide them one to play during music class.  However, ukulele is a great instrument to play at home and a stepping stone to learning other string instruments like guitar, violin, viola, cello or double bass.
