Press Release #2

SUPERINTENDENT BLOG – DR. GLENN MALEYKO
Dearborn to offer special online only school – #Students1stDearborn Press Release #02/2020-21
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Aug. 4, 2020
Contact: David Mustonen, Communications Director
(313) 827-3006 MustonD@dearbornschools.org

Dearborn students can now register for online only school for this yearDearborn Public Schools has yet to finalize how school will begin for our more than 20,000 students this month, but district parents who know they do not want their children to return to a school building for the 2020-21 year are being offered the chance to enroll in a new online-only program. In an effort to meet the needs of our students who live within the Dearborn Public School boundaries and who want a virtual learning option, the district will offer a 100 percent online learning alternative for kindergarten through 12th grade students for the entire school year. Students who enroll in the Dearborn Public Schools Virtual Learning Program will be taught by district staff using district curriculum.  “We realize some of our parents are extremely concerned about COVID-19, especially if they have children or other family members with other underlying health issues,” said Superintendent Glenn Maleyko.  “This provides an option for parents who know they want their children learning online for at least this school year.  Those students will have access to our same great Dearborn teaching staff and the same curriculums used across the district. That consistency will help students succeed while learning from home and if they opt to return to in-building learning the following year.”Dearborn School parents who want Virtual Learning for their child need to enroll their student in this option.  Parents are asked to sign up before Aug. 17th so staffing arrangements can be made.  Classes will start Aug. 31, along with the rest of Dearborn Public Schools.  Enrollment information can be obtained from Students Services at (313) 827-3005, and parents can find out more information about the program by visiting https://vla.dearbornschools.org/. Note, Dearborn Public Schools has not yet announced how school will resume this fall.  The Board will discuss plans during a special meeting on Aug. 6 and is expected to officially approve a plan on Aug. 10. Any return to school plan that is adopted will likely be reevaluated every month in light of COVID-19 conditions at that time.  That means even if the district opts to start classes entirely online for all students, the district could later move back to in-building classes this year.Enrolling in the Virtual Learning Program is a year-long commitment for Dearborn students.  Students may choose to return to their home school at the start of the 2021-22 school year.  If a student wishes to return to in-building learning at the semester break this winter, the district will find a school that is not at enrollment capacity.  This may or may not be the student’s home school. If the student is not placed at their home school, they will return to their home building at the beginning of the next school year.  Virtual Learning students would still be eligible to participate in other district programs including sports and extracurricular activities, if the child meets all other requirements.Parents considering the online program should carefully weigh whether committing to this option for the full year is a good match for them and their child.  Virtual learning is personalized, but requires students to be self-motivated to complete tasks with less supervision.  Parents must be willing and able to help keep their child focused.  It also requires students who can self-advocate and reach out to teachers if they have questions or if issues arise. Students will be expected to participate in live lessons and adhere to scheduled classwork and assignments.  Middle and high school students will be expected to spend approximately five to eight hours a week on each class for a total of 30 or more hours per week.  Elementary students will be expected to work 20 to 30 hours a week on school work.“Dearborn Public Schools always works to provide our students with personalized options that meet their individual needs. While learning entirely online is not a good fit for many students and families, we want to provide the Virtual Learning Program for those students who would benefit from it,” Superintendent Glenn Maleyko said

Stout Falcons being Recognized today…

Although we cannot honor the Stout Falcons who have excelled in various areas this past year (sports, after school clubs, classes) in the usual way in Stout’s auditorium, they certainly deserve to be recognized for their accomplishments in a slide show presentation.

To see the wonderful slide presentation for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, click on the blue …. Stout’s i- blog page to view the Honors Assemblies (a little different this year, but still wonderful!), thanks to Ms. Alhassan.

If you see youself in the presentation, you will be able to pick up your certificate(s) next Thursday, June 18th. Visit the school blog for more details.

It has been my absolute pleasure having you as part of my life the past 9 months and it is my great privilege to have been part of yours! I know the past 3 months have been quite a challenge for all of us, but we have learned a lot and we still have alot to learn. Stay healthy and safe and I hope to see you all next year!

Wherever you go and whatever you do, please remember that I will always be grateful for having taught you and you will always be important to me. You are very special and you will always be very special to me!

The 2019/2020 school year is almost over, but…

Summer Learning is about to begin!

Click Here for Slide Show about Summer Learning

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

According to Johns Hopkins University, the effects of summer learning loss can result in nearly a three-month loss in grade-level equivalency in math and a two-month loss in grade-level equivalency in reading.   As a result of the school closure, estimates suggest students will return in the fall of 2020 with roughly 70% of the learning gains in reading relative to a typical school year.  However in mathematics, students are likely to show much smaller learning gains and in some grades, nearly a full year behind what we would observe in normal conditions. In order to close the summer learning loss gap in reading and math, middle school students will be  expected to complete Summer Learning before they return in the fall.  Teachers will grade the completed summer work and it will count towards next year’s grades.  Below are the expectations for both math and literacy.  Thank you so much for supporting your child’s development through summer learning.

Math: Students need to …

  • Complete 60 minutes of Khan Academy practice a week (Practice only, videos will not count), at their RIT score level.
  • Access Khan Academy through Clever from the Dearborn Schools Student page

DO NOT LOG IN FROM THE STUDENT’S PERSONAL ACCOUNT

Below is the grade breakdown for Math (by minutes).
480+ minutes =A   384 – 479 =B       336 – 383 = C       288 – 335= D

Literacy:

  • Read a minimum of two books of your choice before you return in the fall.
  • Then, in your English Language Arts class you will complete some sort of evaluation. This could be in the form of a book talk, a one-pager, or a small project about your reading. These are generally related to characters, conflicts, plot, and lessons learned. Please refer to building blogs for more specific information.

Attention: Students and Parents…Do you have any library books or textbooks that need to be returned to Stout?

Mrs. Hankins, Stout’s media specialist, is kindly asking that you bring back your library books, so that they may be put back on the library shelves. Please return them to Stout this week when you come to pick up your belongings that were taken out of your locker. Place library books in a grocery store bag and textbooks in another grocery store bag. Check my post from last week to see the dates/times to pick up your belongings.

Click below to see a cool video produced by Hankins Films (yes, Mrs. Hankins now has a new job in Hollywood…well, almost!) This video is sooooo good, that I think that she would be a great movie producer! Judge for yourself…

Question of the Day… Can I still do the assignment if it’s past the due date?

Yes, you can still complete it for a grade!

Many students are working hard to complete all of their missing work in Google Classroom and Khan Academy (remember to log in through Clever). This shows that you’re really trying.

All of your assignments are still available on Google Classroom. It is organized in reverse chronological order, meaning that week 9 is first. If you scroll down, you’ll find week 8, then week 7, etc.

You may click on the CLASSWORK tab to see the assignments that were assigned and any missing work, along with an INSTRUCTIONS tab. YOU CAN STILL COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENT even if it’s past the due date. So, please just do it!

I want you all to do well this final card marking and I would be happy to help you get caught up with your missing assignments. Please email me if you need any help at all!

Stay safe and healthy during quarantine!
