COVID-19 Week #3 Lessons

Congratulations on completing another week of remote learning assignments! We have a full week of learning ahead of us. Remember the student Google Classroom login email is studentnumber@dearbornschools.org and their password is their birthday in MM/DD/YYYY format. Students should know their student number by now, but may need help with the @dearbornschools.org part of their email. We will continue working through our lessons this week. Remember writing work can be done in a notebook or on loose leaf papers. The math lessons will still be presented in a video and then the assigned math page will be attached. Students who have their Eureka Math Succeed books can complete the work that way and students who do not can print or copy the problems on a loose leaf paper. We will continue working together to ensure the success of each student. For now, please click on the link to access our Google Classroom: https://classroom.google.com/u/1/c/MzEyNDcwODAxM1pa

Taking a Step Back From COVID-19

I just wanted to take a step back amidst all the chaos going on with COVID-19 and share some things with parents and students. I know that during this crisis many families have many realities. I also understand that the capacity to help support our students at home may be limited in relation to everything going on at home and in the world. Please understand that students will not be penalized for not submitting their work. I will continue to provide feedback to student work and I am completely flexible with due dates. We would like to continue enriching the learning of our students and help however best we can. I appreciate the outpouring support of all the parents who are working hard juggling this new remote learning while dealing with other stressors. You ROCK!! Please make sure to take the time to destress, take time for yourselves, and be safe.

COVID-19 Week #1 Lessons

During our COVID-19 break we will be using remote learning to complete our class assignments. As I know this new learning maybe a little overwhelming at first, this week students will practice using Google Classroom and working on simple tasks in reading, writing, and math. Their Google Classroom login email is their studentnumber@dearbornschools.org and their password is their birthday in MM/DD/YYYY format. Students should already know their student number, but may need help with the @dearbornschools.org part of their email. Next week I hope to include our science and social studies work as well. Please notice that I have deleted the previous math page assignments as we will not be reviewing during the time off, but instead we will continue working through our lessons to prevent us from falling behind. My goal is to post the assignments for the day each morning on Google Classroom. Writing work can be done in a notebook or loose leaf papers. The math lesson will be presented in a video and then the assigned math page will be attached. Students who have their Eureka Math Succeed books can complete the work that way and students who do not can print or copy the problems on a loose leaf paper. I understand that things may be a little complicated at first, but we will work together to ensure the success of each student. For now, please click on the link to access our Google Classroom: https://classroom.google.com/u/1/c/MzEyNDcwODAxM1pa

School Closing

All Dearborn Public Schools will be closed for students effective immediately, March 13, 2020. This is a result of Governor Whitmer’s order to close all K-12 school buildings, public, private, and boarding, starting Monday, March 16 until Sunday, April 5.

Dearborn Public Schools spring break will take place from Monday, April 6 through Friday, April 10. Students will return to school on Monday, April 13, 2020.

Students may report on Friday, March 13, 2020 at the normal start time to pick up their belongings and school supplies.

All staff will be at Nowlin on Friday, March 13, 2020 to assist students. Staff will only attend for the morning half of the day followed by a half day release time.

As of Thursday, 3-12-2020 there are no reported or confirmed cases of COVID 19 in the Dearborn Public Schools.

This closure of schools is part of a nationwide effort to slow the spread of the COVID 19 virus. These actions will not eliminate the COVID 19 virus, cure COVID 19, and this will not guarantee that a person will not contract the COVID virus at a later time. Again, these actions are part of a nationwide effort to slow the spread and limit the number of people who will become infected.

Thank you

Welcome to Miss. Najm’s Class!

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! I am looking forward to a rewarding learning year getting to know and work with your student. During the first week of school we will be spending time getting to know each other and learning classroom routines. It is important that we create a safe learning environment for all students so learning becomes easier to achieve.

I have put together a useful informational sheet to help you and your student become familiar with my expectations for the school year. Please take some time to read through the information.

About Me:

My name is Nesreen Najm and this will be my 7th year of teaching at Nowlin Elementary.  I was born in Dearborn, MI and I am a product of Dearborn Public Schools myself! I attended Wayne State University where I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. I then went on to receive my Master’s Degree in Education with an English as Second Language endorsement from the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Last spring, I received my Administrative Certificate. This fall, I will be taking my last course in the Educational Leadership doctoral program at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. I am very excited to be teaching at Nowlin Elementary.  It is a very special school and I hope I get to know you as the school year progresses.

Homework:

Everyday your child will be bringing home a homework folder that includes a reading log. The homework that will be given is an extension of the learning that we taught in class that day. Reading is the key to your child’s success in all areas of learning, so I expect them to read five days a week for 20 minutes. Parents are required to sign their child’s reading log daily. Reading logs will be collected on Fridays along with spelling homework for the week. New spelling words will be sent out on Mondays and students are to complete one spelling activity each night Monday through Thursday. I will be collecting them on Fridays.

Water bottles:

Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle to school daily. Research shows that keeping ourselves hydrated helps our brains work better!

Suggested Donations:

Dearborn Public Schools supply all students with basic school supplies to use in the classroom. However, students do lose, break, and wear out many supplies. A suggested supply list has been sent home with each student. It would be greatly appreciated if parents were able to donate these materials to both your student and our classroom.

It is encouraged for students to bring in a healthy snack daily. We have long mornings and our brains need nourishment. Please do not send chocolate snacks, candy, or chips for snack time.

I enjoy making the classroom interesting and fun, as well as teaching your child the basic needs of becoming a successful student. I have an open-door policy and I am happy to meet with you anytime. If we work together as a team, then your child will have a very successful year!

If you have any questions and/or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. My email address is NAJMN@DEARBORNSCHOOLS.ORG.

Miss. Najm’s Supply List

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and staying cool. As stores begin putting out school supplies, it is important to keep in mind that Dearborn Public Schools provide all school supplies and learning materials required for all students in all programs. Parents often request a list of school supplies for their child and although these supplies are NOT required, teachers and principals greatly appreciate the support these additional supplies provide to the classroom. Below, I have put together a list of suggested school supplies for our classroom.

If you have any questions please let me know. I look forward to meeting everyone and hearing all about your summer vacation!

Miss. Najm
