End of the Year Updates

With the end of the school year drawing near, here are some updates for upcoming events:

On Thursday, June 10, 2021, and Friday, June 11, 2021 we will be having field day at Nowlin for all students. Unfortunately, no volunteers are permitted at this time.

The PTA will be providing each student with a Nowlin water bottle and flavored ice popsicles during field day. They are asking for a five dollar donation (not required) but it will help offset the costs that have taken place this year such as water bottles, teacher appreciation week, 5th grade promotion, 5th grade field day, continuing the ongoing fund for camp, etc.

To participate in field day, please make sure your student returns their reading bag and library books on Monday, June 7, 2021 and Tuesday, June 8, 2021.

On Monday, June 14, 2021 and Tuesday June 15, 2021, our class will be having an extended recess outdoors. Students may bring a bag of treats and juice for themselves to enjoy outdoors on that day. No treats will be passed out to classmates.

The last day of school is Friday, June 18, 2021. It is also a half day. This means students will be dismissed at 11:45am.

Lastly, the PTA has ordered Nowlin Bandits T-Shirts. They will be available for purchase. Once they are delivered more information will be provided.

Teacher of the Year

Nominations have now opened for the 2021 Alberta Murihead Teacher of the Year Students Choice Award.

This annual award is sponsored by the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce and presented by LaFontaine Automotive Group. The nomination deadline is Friday, May 28, 2021 at 5 p.m. The online nomination form can be found at http://bit.ly/DbnTOY2021.

Paper nomination forms can be printed from the district website or picked up at any Dearborn Public School or the District’s Administrative Service Center, 18700 Audette St., Dearborn. Completed forms can be dropped off or mailed to the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce, 22100 Michigan Ave., Dearborn, MI 48124 or faxed to (313) 584-9818. Adults may assist students in completing nominations when necessary. No more than two teachers may be nominated per student.

Although the district appreciates all the hard work that parents have done this past year to be an active part of their child’s education, this award honors our Dearborn Public Schools teachers. Students may nominate any new or veteran teacher whom they feel has made an outstanding contribution to the teaching profession. Preschool through second grade students are asked to describe how their teacher makes learning fun. Students in this category can include a nice drawing, if they wish, but it will not be part of the selection process. Third through fifth grade students must describe how their teacher has created a classroom where learning is positive and fun. Middle school students (grades 6-8) are asked to explain how their teacher connects classroom learning with everyday life. Students in high school must describe how their teacher is preparing them to be college and career ready.

Applications will be assessed on the quality of the nomination, not on the number received. Award judges are members of the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce Education Committee and are not provided with the teachers’ names. One winner from each category will be announced at a special ceremony to be held at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center on Thursday, Sept. 23 at 4:15 p.m. The Chamber of Commerce delayed this year’s nominations and celebration hoping COVID conditions will improve to allow for an in-person awards announcement in the fall.

Teachers selected to receive the Teacher of Year Award are recognized as positive role models who consistently provide unique, productive, positive classroom experiences. Winning teachers receive a $1,000 cash prize and a glass award commemorating their achievement. They also will join a select group of Dearborn teachers who have been recognized by the community for their dedication and passion for teaching.

Book Fair Message From the PTA

Hello Nowlin Bandits!

Don’t forget that Thursday and Friday is the day to purchase from our Book Fair!  Remember that purchasing will look at little different this year, so please make sure to send in your child’s order (from their wish list) and money (or use Scholastic’s e-wallet)! DON’T FORGET TO INCLUDE 6% TAX FOR ALL ORDERS! Students will NOT be returning to the Book Fair, so they must have made their selections before school.
Are you unhappy with your child’s choices? Want to buy a few more books?  Want to see what’s available?  Head over to the Nowlin PTA Facebook page to see a picture of each of the book carts and all of the books available!  You can then check the Scholastic website for the price of the books.
Thanks for your support of this year’s Book Fair! We get 25% in proceeds to support our school.  Do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions you may have!

Spring Break Return

Hi everyone! I hope everyone is enjoying their spring break! For future planning purposes, I wanted to share the following information with you. As our district continues to place safety as a top priority and with an abundance of caution, all students will be on a virtual schedule for the week of April 6th to April 9th. This means that three days will be changed to synchronous online learning instead of Hybrid learning (April 6th, 8th, and 9th). Wednesday April 7th was already scheduled as a virtual day. During these days, all students will be expected to be on Zoom at 8:35am till 2:20pm with learning labs after. We will follow their scheduled A-group & B-group schedule for specials. Enjoy the rest of your break and stay safe!😊

Birthday Treats

As we continue our hybrid learning, recognizing birthdays is something many parents have asked about.

If you choose to recognize your child’s birthday at school, please do not send in edible or drinkable items (eg, cupcakes, juice boxes, etc) for this school year.

Parents can bring non-perishable gifts a day in advance, if they choose, so the items can be quarantined.

Thank you for understanding.

February 26

Reminder

Just a reminder, our hybrid schedule starts this Monday, March 1, 2021 for students in grades K-2 and the following Monday, March 8, 2021 for students in grades 3-5. The next two weeks will have some bumps. As stated, Hybrid starts Monday, March 1, 2021, but will only be for Monday and Tuesday and then online for the remainder of the week. The same schedule follows for the week of March 8, 2021. Starting, Monday, March 15, 2021, we will be in full swing. If your child is attending, in person, the school day is 9:40am-2:20pm. If your child is online, they need to log onto our class Zoom at 8:35am to meet with me for directions and directions.

Please remind your child about social spacing when in line. We will also be practicing this on the first and second days back (and going forward). Parents are not allowed in the building due to COVID restrictions. Here is the link to the Q & A powerpoint from this week: Q & A

Thank you in advance for your flexibility as we navigate our new style of learning in the weeks to come. I look forward to seeing everyone soon!

Students will be asked to attend our class Zoom chat on their scheduled learning lab date and time. I do not plan on having them be on Zoom the whole time. This will be in effect until further notice. This will apply to all learning labs at Nowlin. Thank you in advance for your support and understanding.

October 15

Updates

If you were able to tune into the district board meeting this past Monday, then you may have heard that our all virtual learning has been extended for two more weeks. There will be another board meeting on Monday, October 26, 2020, that will re-evaluate our current pandemic situation and mode of learning. I will continue to post updates regarding any changes regarding the type of learning we will implementing. For now, we want to continue to mask up and practice safety precautions as much as possible.

We are now completing our second week of learning labs. It has been such a great experience for all of us to feel some sort normalcy amidst everything going on around us. Learning labs are being utilized for assessment completion, academic assistance, and/or social emotional support. As we all know, the purpose of learning labs is to support our remote learning, not replace it. This means our Zoom meetings will still take place and our assignments must be submitted through Schoology. As indicated on our Class Dojo Story, a learning lab schedule change has been made and will take effect on Monday, October 19, 2020, to allow students more learning lab time.

Also, starting Monday, our weekly spelling words will be posted on our class iBlog for students to practice during the week and will continue to be posted on Schoology each week. Our spelling tests will still continue on Fridays

Thank you for working with us during these unique times and ensuring that students are completing all of their assignments for grading. We couldn’t have made it this far without your support.

As We Begin

Happy Labor Day! As a reminder, today is a national holiday which means there is no school today and no assignments for students to complete. I did want to send this today rather than tomorrow morning to give time to practice as this is new for us.

Tomorrow will be our first official day of live chats with students. This means we will begin setting the norms and expectations for our online learning. Attendance will be taken twice, once at 8:55am and once at 12:25pm.

To access Schoology have students click on the following: https://dearbornschools.org/student-portal/ then click on Schoology and login with their username and password. Click on courses in the top green banner. Then click on the course titled “2nd Grade Homeroom” (it is the one with the Spectacular Second Grade image). Under course materials, please click on Miss. Najm’s Zoom Meeting and click join. Then wait for the teacher to give permission to join the chat.

This week we will be practicing getting onto our Zoom meetings so it can gets easier. Once this gets easier, we will work on how and when to submit assignments. The plan is to go slow so we can go fast. Please do NOT stress and do NOT hesitate to ask questions. We will get through this together.

Students are asked to have the following materials with them as we start the day:
-Plants and Animals In Their Habitats book that was placed in their folder
-Green Eureka Math “Learn” book
-A sharpened pencil to write with

Thank you for help, support, and patience as we navigate this together!

August 28

Welcome to Miss. Najm’s Second Grade Class!

I would like to welcome you to my second grade classroom. Thank you for taking the time to join my iBlog. What an honor it is to be here with you! I am looking forward to a rewarding, yet different, learning year getting to know and work with you and your families. During the first month of school, we will be spending time getting to know each other, our new learning platform Schoology, and learning the routines and expectations. It is important that we create a safe learning environment for all students so learning becomes easier to achieve.

My name is Miss. Najm and this will be my 8th year of teaching at Nowlin Elementary.  I was born in Dearborn, Michigan and I attended Dearborn Public Schools myself! I graduated from Dearborn High School. After graduating highschool, I attended Wayne State University where I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. I then went on to receive my Master’s Degree in Education with an English as Second Language endorsement from the University of Michigan-Dearborn. In April of 2019, I received my Administrative Certificate and I recently completed my coursework for the Educational Leadership doctoral program at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, attending community events, and traveling. My hobbies include walking, bike riding, and reading.

Suggested Donations:

Dearborn Public Schools supply all students with basic school supplies to use in the classroom. However, students do lose, break, and wear out many supplies. A suggested supply list has previously been posted and will be sent home with each student during the parent meeting next week. This list includes a virtual learning supply list and in class list as well. It would be greatly appreciated if parents were able to donate these materials to both your student and our classroom. As a reminder, we will be participating in virtual learning for the month of September. The COVID situation will be reassessed and the virtual learning option will be reevaluated towards the end of September to determine the type of learning that will take place in October. I appreciate your patience, flexibility, and support as we navigate through this new type of learning.

Parent Meeting:

Our first day of school will take place on Monday, August 31, 2020. The task for Monday will be posted on the Class Dojo page at 9:00am. This will allow us to practice using Class Dojo before we move on. Please note that we will be taking things very slow that week to help us all adjust to our new type of learning. On Tuesday, September 1, 2020, parents will be invited to meet outside of window #26 at Nowlin Elementary. The meetings will start at 9:00am and end at 11:00am. (9:00am-9:30am, 9:30am-10:00am, 10:00am-10:30am, and 10:30-11:00am). They will be offered in thirty minute increments and no more than six parents during one time slot. Please message me the time slots you prefer and I will try my best to accommodate based on availablity at that time. During this time, supplies will be handed out for students and information will be given regarding the learning plan. It will also provide an opportunity for us to meet and parents to ask questions.

I enjoy making the classroom interesting and fun, as well as teaching your child the basic needs of becoming a successful student. I have an open-door policy and I am happy to meet with you anytime. If we work together as a team, then your child will have a very successful year!

If you have any questions and/or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. My email address is NAJMN@DEARBORNSCHOOLS.ORG.

Miss. Najm’s Supply List

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and staying cool. As stores begin putting out school supplies, it is important to keep in mind that Dearborn Public Schools provide all school supplies and learning materials required for all students in all programs. Parents often request a list of school supplies for their child and although these supplies are NOT required, teachers and principals greatly appreciate the support these additional supplies provide to the classroom. Below, I have put together a list of suggested school supplies for both virtual learning and for when we return to the classroom (face to face learning).

If you have any questions please let me know. I look forward to meeting everyone and hearing all about your summer vacation!

Miss. Najm

Thank You!

Thank you to everyone who was able to come pick up their things today. It was so nice to see you all! I am also happy to share that every single one of our library books was turned in! For families who were unable to stop by to pick up their materials today, please do NOT worry! I will be delivering them tomorrow between 12:00pm and 3:00pm. I plan to leave them near the front porch. As soon as materials are delivered, I will send a Class Dojo message to let you know that they have been delivered. Thank you to each and every single one of you and your families for making this an incredible year for me. I am sad that our year together was cut short, but please stop by and visit during the next school year. I will miss you all! Have a great summer!

Reminders

As a reminder, student material pick up will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, June 10, 2020, from 1:00pm to 2:00pm in front of Nowlin.

Also, if your student has any library books to return back to school, we will have a box set up in front of the building to turn in. All library books that were left in student desks have been returned to the library.

Lastly, if you have a district chromebook that you are currently using, you may hold onto it and return it back in the fall. This will allow students to continue going on Raz-Kids, Epic, and Zearn over the summer. I plan to keep the students enrolled in my class for these websites to encourage them to continue their learning over the summer. Thank you!

Parents Can View Curriculum Changes

Dearborn Public Schools is offering a chance for parents and community members to explore two new curriculum resources the District is recommending for next year – one for elementary English Language Arts and the other for some high school math. Both curriculums provide extensive digital resources that are available for school and home use.

Interested parents can view some of the materials online and then learn more about the resources during online meetings on Monday for the elementary program and Tuesday for the math program.

Both curriculum resources have gone through extensive evaluation by Dearborn teachers and have been recommended by the District’s curriculum committee. This is part of the District’s regular process to update and implement new curriculum.  Please note, these changes have not yet been approved by the Board of Education.

Elementary Reading and Writing

Elementary parents are invited to learn more about the Benchmark Advance English Language Arts program that the District is considering for all the kindergarten through fifth grade classrooms.

Benchmark Advance © 2021 is a standards-based, core English Language Arts program. Language arts includes reading and writing and also impacts text-based resources for science and social studies.  The Benchmark program provides lessons and practice in all areas of reading including phonological awareness, phonics and word study, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.  Writing is also included.

Parents are invited to attend a Zoom meeting with Benchmark representatives for more information and a Q & A session on Monday, June 1 from 5 to 6 p.m.  Please email communications@dearbornschools.org for information on logging into the Zoom meeting and to get login information to view a sample of the digital curriculum material.

Updated Information For The Week

On Thursday, April 2, 2020, our governor cancelled in-school learning for the remainder of the school year. Instead, we will be learning remotely. She also set forth some guidelines for Michigan school districts. Luckily our district has been and is currently working on a comprehensive plan to meet the governor’s requirements. At this time not much will change in regards to what is expected of students, parents, and staff. As long as your student is continuing to check in with me on Google Classroom and is participating in Google Hangouts, they should be academically okay.

Below are several notes for the next week:

  • There is no schooling next week as it is Spring Break. Nowlin staff will be available starting Monday, April 13, 2020. Remote learning will also resume at that time.
  • Food distribution will continue during spring break but with a slight change. The days to pick up breakfast and lunch from OL Smith will be Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
  • Audible has lifted it’s paid subscription service while schools are physically closed and you can now browse and play hundreds of current book choices at all levels simply by visiting this link.  https://stories.audible.com/start-listen
  • Signing up for PBS daily newsletter provides you with excellent activities for making learning fun for the whole family. https://www.dptv.org/education/resource-list/

Taking a Step Back From COVID-19

I just wanted to take a step back amidst all the chaos going on with COVID-19 and share some things with parents and students. I know that during this crisis many families have many realities. I also understand that the capacity to help support our students at home may be limited in relation to everything going on at home and in the world. Please understand that students will not be penalized for not submitting their work. I will continue to provide feedback to student work and I am completely flexible with due dates. We would like to continue enriching the learning of our students and help however best we can. I appreciate the outpouring support of all the parents who are working hard juggling this new remote learning while dealing with other stressors. You ROCK!! Please make sure to take the time to destress, take time for yourselves, and be safe.

COVID-19 Week #1 Lessons

During our COVID-19 break we will be using remote learning to complete our class assignments. As I know this new learning maybe a little overwhelming at first, this week students will practice using Google Classroom and working on simple tasks in reading, writing, and math. Their Google Classroom login email is their studentnumber@dearbornschools.org and their password is their birthday in MM/DD/YYYY format. Students should already know their student number, but may need help with the @dearbornschools.org part of their email. Next week I hope to include our science and social studies work as well. Please notice that I have deleted the previous math page assignments as we will not be reviewing during the time off, but instead we will continue working through our lessons to prevent us from falling behind. My goal is to post the assignments for the day each morning on Google Classroom. Writing work can be done in a notebook or loose leaf papers. The math lesson will be presented in a video and then the assigned math page will be attached. Students who have their Eureka Math Succeed books can complete the work that way and students who do not can print or copy the problems on a loose leaf paper. I understand that things may be a little complicated at first, but we will work together to ensure the success of each student. School Closing

All Dearborn Public Schools will be closed for students effective immediately, March 13, 2020. This is a result of Governor Whitmer’s order to close all K-12 school buildings, public, private, and boarding, starting Monday, March 16 until Sunday, April 5.

Dearborn Public Schools spring break will take place from Monday, April 6 through Friday, April 10. Students will return to school on Monday, April 13, 2020.

Students may report on Friday, March 13, 2020 at the normal start time to pick up their belongings and school supplies.

All staff will be at Nowlin on Friday, March 13, 2020 to assist students. Staff will only attend for the morning half of the day followed by a half day release time.

As of Thursday, 3-12-2020 there are no reported or confirmed cases of COVID 19 in the Dearborn Public Schools.

This closure of schools is part of a nationwide effort to slow the spread of the COVID 19 virus. These actions will not eliminate the COVID 19 virus, cure COVID 19, and this will not guarantee that a person will not contract the COVID virus at a later time. Again, these actions are part of a nationwide effort to slow the spread and limit the number of people who will become infected.

Thank you
