Week of 11-4-19

Dear Families,

I wanted to thank you all so much for helping us make our Halloween party such a success last week! Here is what is happening in our classroom this week along with important reminders as we begin the month of November! Time is flying by and we are working so hard.

Important Dates:

Conferences: Yesterday was the first day of conferences. There are also conferences next Tuesday and Thursday. I will be sending home reminders to keep you updated. Please let me know if you have a conflict or change in your schedule and we will make sure to reschedule it. Looking forward to sharing how much your little penguin has grown!

Homework: Homework packets will be collected Monday and the next 5 lessons will be sent home. In addition, your child will receive a new homework game to add to their binder! Thank you again for all your ongoing support with the packets. Each week when your child returns them they will get a check mark. If they reach four in the month they will receive a penguin point!

Language Arts: This week our theme was/will be about scarecrows. Students will identify setting, make connections and place themselves in the story and share their opinions. Students will recall important details from the story as we work on retelling. Our books will be “Scarecrow” by Cynthia Rylant and “The Little Scarecrow Boy” by Margaret Wise Brown. In addition, we will focus on the following CCSS Phonics: substituting beginning sounds to make new sounds, blending syllables (onset and rhyme), isolating/providing final sound in words.

Poem: “I’m a Little Scarecrow”

Sight Words: for, are Letters: Uu, Ll

Writing: (Narrative Focus) This week we will continue writing through very detailed pictures that include color and labels. We will also begin our next unit in writing that will take us beyond labeling beginning sounds! It’s going to be such hard work and fun I can’t wait to see how much we grow this next marking period!

Math: We will begin a new Module in math this month about geometry. This will be a short 10 lesson module, however we will go back to another geometry unit later in the year.

Science and Social Studies: In science we will begin new mysteries about “Weather”. In social studies we will begin learning about Needs and Wants.
