5th Graders learned about the American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (December 22, 1960 – August 12, 1988). Basquiat was a versatile and innovative artist and musician. Born of Haitian-American/Puerto Rican parents in Brooklyn, he first gained a following from his street art in the late 1970s. One of his symbols he often used was a crown. We used it at Maples to represent our heroes. We mixed primary colors, black and magenta to paint an abstract artwork. Then students chose two heroes, wrote about them, drew symbols representing them, and included a crown of course!
