A Rough Start

Expecting a child is a difficult and stressful moment in any woman’s life, no matter how well prepared she may be. Leila, an average aged woman, had two children before she thought about continuing her education. Once both her children were old enough, she made a decision to go back and get a degree in nursing. After passing her HESI and making it into the program, she received big news that soon changed her life.

She found out that she was pregnant with her third child. This pregnancy was unexpected because Leila was not planning to have any more children until she finished school. But like everything in life, the unexpected can make a person stronger, especially for her, since she has a great support system and has gone through this twice already.

“It wasn’t hard, I had a lot of help from my husband and mom since I had other children. I had a lot of support while I was in school because my family’s goal was for me to achieve career and become successful,” Leila agreed. Leila had to manage her time to the dot while in nursing school.

“Manage to study by organizing a time to study when the kids were sleeping or at times if it was too much my husband would take the kids out and leave me home by myself to study,” Leila also recited.  Other alternatives that Leila took was going to the library while having the family take a couple hours of their day to watch the children or staying up late nights to get last minute studying done, because the dream was to become a nurse and show my children that no matter what situation you’re in, you can always achieve your goal in life.

Although Leila was with child in nursing school, she never looked at the situation with any negativity. It actually motivated her more in the sense of showing young women that if she can go through such a stressful time getting a degree, being pregnant, and having two children at home, anyone can do it. Leila has received her degree and works at Beaumont Hospital now, being happier than she ever was because “the whole journey was worth it in the end”.
