Is it the Material?

Materials are any non-living matter, whether they be natural or man-made. Yet it seems people care too much about them? Everywhere we go there are materialistic people that get caught up in the finer things, but why is that?

Whether it’s a gadget you need, a game you have to buy, or a brand you have to wear, we all have a bit of a materialistic side. People often get caught up with buying things they don’t even realise the amount they are spending on something. We often think that purchasing new this make us happy, but is that true?

Materialism is often described as a tendency to consider material possessions and physical comfort as more important than spiritual values.  Sometimes buying new things make us happy. “Obviously spending money on new things makes you happy because  you wanted the item and having it will bring you joy.”  Stated Zahra Hassan a student at Unis MIddle School. Thinking about buying new items brings happiness that boosts up materialistic people. “I think people spend a lot of money on stuff when they can just get the same thing cheape. Wearing or owning something expensive makes you feel good and also brings happiness and boosts up self confidence.” She added. Our brains think that acquiring new stuff will make us happy, but it always this way?

Some people believe that buying new things doesn’t make you happier. We are actually unhappy when we put too much value on material objects. This is especially true for a compulsive shopper, or someone with a shopping addiction, which can cause many problems like bankruptcy and being in debt. Believing that the more money and stuff we have, the happier we’ll be, and comparing what we have to what someone else has causes anxiety, depression, and unhappiness.  Mohamed Mourtada commented on a video showing how your brain associates price and quality. “It’s crazy how depending on price or the value of something we find it better than the cheaper item even if its the same thing. This leads to companies increasing their prices to make us think that the more expensive thing is the better item.” said Mohamed Mourtada, a student attending Unis Middle School.

The more you own, the better your life will be, but this is not true. It doesn’t matter if you like spending money or not. It all depends on in you are happy. If buying new things makes you happy then go ahead and keep on purchasing, but be careful on what you spend. Knowing your limits is always the best.

  1. I thought it was great that you included two perspectives in this article. Doing so definitely gives readers something to think about. Interesting fact about how our brains associate price and quality. Doing research and finding out cool bits of information like that really adds to the story!

  2. I totally agree with this, too many people get to obsessed with material items. (cough Donald Trump cough) I think to live a happy life let go of your possessions, not let your life revolve around them. People say The more you own, the better your life will be, I don’t think this is true. But I don’t think this is true to all people! Some people can have material items but not have too much value on the item.

  3. I really enjoyed reading this article because it reminded me of myself. I agree with this because not only is it true but its similar to the things that most of us humans do. Usually When a new pair of shoes or a new game releases I get it most of the time I ask for it. After I read this article I realized that I don’t need to get most of the stuff I ask for because most of the time its pretty useless.
