Born and raised in Beirut and now living in Harlem, Tarek Yamani taught himself jazz at the age of 19 and has dedicated himself to exploring relationships between African-American jazz and classical Arabic music.
His album Lisan Al Tarab takes audiences on a journey from Egypt in the early 1900s to present-day New York. This concert will include reinterpretations of classical Arab muwashahat, traditional music from Mesopotamia, and original compositions based on edgy rhythms and modes from the Levant. “Shimmering spidery piano godliness…” (TimeOut)
Yamani makes his UMS debut with his trio.
Co-presented with the Arab American National Museum.

Good news!

The annual Holiday Sing Along is almost here and you are invited! It will take place on December 20th in the Howe Gym at 9am. All of our students from the Howe Montessori and Center -Based program will be in attendance and parents are welcome to join us.

Students and staff are welcome to dress up in festive clothing like red/green, Santa hats, reindeer antlers, Christmas light necklaces, garland, etc. Parents are welcome to do the same.

Please remember that Howe is a scent-free school as we have students and staff with allergies. Thanks!

Hope to see you there!

Helping students match Pitch

Helping students match Pitch

Here is an article that gives some specific ideas for helping students to match pitch. I have found them to be most useful over the years and want to bring close attention to the point of starting off by using the notes in the speaking voice of the student.

Dearborn Christmas tree lighting and sing along on Monday, Nov. 25

Dearborn will hold its annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and sing-along at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center on Monday. Nov. 25.

The free event starts at 6:30 p.m. when Mayor John B. O’Reilly, Jr., assisted by Nowlin Elementary kindergartener Ari Sulollari, will light the ceremonial Christmas tree outside the Michael A Guido Theater entrance.  Festivities will then move into the theater for holiday performances by the Dearborn Community Concert Band and the Dearborn Public Schools Elementary & Secondary Honors Choirs.

Following the sing-along, everyone is invited to take a free tour of the Festival of Trees in the Hubbard Ballroom, where younger children can visit with Santa Claus. Cookies, coffee and hot chocolate will be available in the lobby during the evening’s festivities. The annual tree lighting and sing-along is hosted by the Dearborn Recreation & Parks Department and made possible, in part, by generous support from Park Place Catering and the Dearborn Lions Club.
