Hello,

We are now beginning week three assignments. I know life is not the way we want it to be. We still need to find some normalcy. Completing a bit of work will help in that regard. You as a 7th grade student should be reading and writing a bit each day. The assignments selected by all 7th grade science teachers go along with what we would have been learning if we were in school.

Week #3 Assignments are listed below:

IXL Complete Letter Y Natural Resources and Human Impacts. Make sure you are completing the 7th grade portion.

Newsela- Read Earth’s Systems; Natural Resources. Remember to annotate in 10 places. Complete the quiz and the writing. The writing should be 3-5 sentences. This is only a short writing and should be free of spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors. Remember to proof read by pointing to each word as you read your writing to yourself.

This work is due by Saturday, April 4th at noon. Please email me if you have any questions.

When we return you will need to turn in a report on your science fair. This report should include the following: Science Fair Question, Hypothesis, Procedure, Materials, Research, Independent Variable, Dependent Variable and Control Variables. As you can read, I am not asking for you to complete the experiment. You should have all parts of the science fair project completed up until you would need to do the experiment. This should be typed out neatly and printed. This will be a summative grade when we return to school. Here is a template to help you: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Rb5gjwpmmuuaVwfv0bpODrhFTStDMYr3EoMuNN4Lt0w/edit?usp=sharing

The 321 Article Summary which was due on Friday, March 27th will be turned in when we return to school. It should be completed and placed in your science folder. Since the poster with your article titles is still at school, I do not know each hour’s article title. I do know 2nd hour is Shooting for the Stars, 3rd Hour is Protecting Puffins, 4th hour is School or Bust, 5th hour is In your Element. If a 6th hour students can email me the title for the 321 article summary, I can post it for others. If your magazine is still at school, you can most likely find the article online.

Lastly, I hope everyone is safe and taking the necessary precautions to keep others safe as well. Use this time to enrich yourself. Try learning something new. You can. . . learn the 45 presidents in order, memorize the USA state locations and/or state capitals, learn how to juggle, practice cursive handwriting, memorize some of the Periodic Table of Elements, memorize the coaches of all the NFL/MLB/NHL/ teams along with their mascots. . . There are so many things you can do to enrich YOUR brain. Send me something you have been doing to help yourself be a learner!!!

Stay Safe!

Hello Students and Parents,

I hope everyone is staying healthy and following the protocols set in place by the Center of Disease Control. Here is a short video which shows the science of why we all need to wash our hands.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LKVUarhtvE

I reviewed all the homework submitted. Most people are completing some or all of the homework. According to my data, 85% of the student in my classes have completed some or all of the work. Although in 5th hour, 77% of the students complete all of the work!! Way to go 5th hour,

Tomorrow before noon I will assign week 2 assignments. I have notices, students completing the work take about 3 hours to complete it. That is 3 hours total for the entire week.

As always, email me with any questions, comments or concerns.

Stay Safe,

Ms. Duquette

Hello Students and Parents,

I hope you are all in good health and in good spirits. I’ve been noticing many more people walking outside. The temperature was very warm this morning. It’s good to get some fresh air, while staying away from others of course.

I was looking at the IXL information. It looks like about 70% of you have completed or started the work. Most students are taking between 1-2 hours to complete the IXL. The purpose of this IXL was to have you understand the different parts of the scientific method. When scientists complete an experiment they need to know the various components. If you need assistance, please email me so I can help. I did email every student with their Username and Password already, but if you are stuck on a kind of question please let me know.

As for the Newsela article, about 96% of you began the assignment. Remember you must read the article, annotate the article- making sure 3 of the annotations (marked in green) are connections to science class. These connections could be to a different reading, an experiment, a class discussion or a video. The Newsela assignment should take about an hour for most students.

We as teachers were asked to give all our students 2 assignments per week. I will be continuing to do so. On Monday morning I will give you your next assignments. The assignments will all be due on the following Saturday at noon.

Please remember I am an email away. If you have a question, comment, or would like to share something interesting please email me. I will respond to all emails.

Stay safe,

Ms. Duquette

MARCH 15

Hello Students and Parents,

As was mentioned in the email sent out Friday and in the March 13th blog posting, I will be posting the weekly assignments by Monday. I have been receiving many student emails, so I decided to send this out today.

Students, you are to complete the Newsela reading, writing and quiz by Saturday, March 21st. All completed material will be graded and entered into the grade book.

The first newsela article is “How does Thermometers Measure Temperature.” As you read the article online, you must highlight the text and then annotate in the margins. You should have at least 10 annotations. Three of the annotation must be connections to something from science class. Those annotations should be highlighted in green.

In order to access newsela go to the following:

newsela.com

Once you’re are logged into Newsela you will need to use the code below which corresponds to your science class:

HOURCLASS CODE
2NDGHBQD3
3RD8BDXZ3
4THK647SX
5THS4UXXS
6THTA2W8B

You will also need to complete the IXL. I emailed each student with their Science IXL password and username. The section for Science IXL this week is “B Designing Experiments.” You are to complete Lessons 1-5. Your goal is to get a Smart Score of 80.

Again, this online learning is new to most of us. Please email me if you have any questions. Please avoid commenting via the blog. It is much more efficient to comment via the school email. Students please use your school email.

Please stay healthy,

Ms. Duquette

Hello Students and Families,

On March 12th, schools were ordered to close down for three weeks. However, this does not mean that your education stops. You can expect to be given assignments to do online, from the comfort of your home!

All seventh grade science teachers will be using the following format for the next three weeks:

  • On Monday, by noon, we will post your weekly assignments on the blog. These will consist of NewsELA and IXL assignments.
  • These assignments are due on Saturday, by noon.
  • Each assignment will be graded based on completion and effort.

In addition to your weekly assignments, we are asking that you continue to work on your science fair project on your own.  When you return to school, we need a document which has the following:

  • The science question you are investigating
  • The hypothesis stated as an if/then statement
  • The procedure to complete the experiment
  • A list of materials needed
  • Research about your topic
  • The Independent variable, dependent variable and control variable.

The actual experiment does not need to be done at this time.  We know many of you are working with a partner, and we do not expect you to work with a partner at this time.

Please email me with any questions and/or concerns.

Be safe.

Ms. Duquette

Students have a 321 article summary due tomorrow. The articles are as follows: 2nd Hour- Bad Bounce, 3rd Hour-Into the Fire, 4th Hour-Cake Chemist, 5th Hour- Secrets in the Ice, 6th Hour-Domino Design.

Students had time in class to organize all work in their Interactive Science Notebook. Students should have all pages up to page 40A completed.

On Tuesday, students began a frayer model of 4 words. Students will be discussing those words tomorrow and I will collect this paper. The words are optimize, prototype, investigation and evaporation.
