Welcome back to another school year!

I am so excited to be in 6th Grade Language Arts and to be working with a new group of students!  In these first two days, the students have been given a syllabus, a permission slip to watch PG movies at school, a list of materials needed for LA, bathroom passes, planners, and picture forms.  I have attached the list of materials, the permission slip, and syllabus to this blog post.  The planners and picture forms can be picked up in Advisory. Permission slips and classroom materials are due on Monday.

In Language Arts, we are currently working on an All About Me poster.  This assignment will be completed in class.  Some students have chosen to draw a picture of themselves while others have decided to bring in a picture from home.  These pictures need to be brought in tomorrow.  We will also be looking at our summer reading homework tomorrow. The students are to select one book they read this summer to bring in to class.

I know that transitioning to middle school can be an exciting but stressful time.  If anyone needs additional support, my door is always open.  You can also email me at trayloa@dearbornschools.org or add a comment to this blog.

Have a great evening!

At this point, I have done all of my grading and submitted grades for Report Cards.  I just wanted to say that it has been a pleasure getting to know and work with each student.  I have really enjoyed the experience that I have had this school year and I hope each of you feel the same way.  Just a reminder that the summer homework for Language Arts is to complete an hour of Vocabulary or Reading on mobymax.com each week.  Students must also read two selected novels that were on a list sent home yesterday.  The students’ Language Arts teacher in eighth grade will ask the students which two books they have read and give them tests.

I hope everyone has a wonderful summer, gets lots of rest, and has lots of fun!  If anyone needs help in eighth grade, my door is always open.

Congratulations on a successful year! 🙂

I have been very impressed with the presentations I have seen so far.  On Monday we will take our final exam.  I have uploaded the powerpoints of students that have presented so far.  Please use them to study.  Also, look over the story of Pandora and Prometheus.  The note sheet I gave you when we first started Greek Mythology will help too.  Once the final is over, we will finish presentations and begin watching The Lightening Thief.

Today in Language Arts the students read a story about Pandora and her box.  We discussed what this text meant and I asked the students to make some type of connection to the text.  Most people finished this in class but if it was not completed, it is now homework.

Powerpoint presentations will be tomorrow.  Please make sure all powerpoints that have not been submitted will be turned in by 8am.  If any powerpoints need to be emailed to me, my address is trayloa@dearbornschools.org.

Have a great evening!

Journal: Tell me about your Greek god/goddess.  What you like to be him or her?  Why or why not?

Today in Language Arts students continued to work on their powerpoint presentations on a Greek Mythology.  These will be due on Thursday.  If there is time, I will be giving about fifteen or twenty minutes to work on this in class tomorrow.  Other than that, this needs to be completed at home and ready to present on Thursday.

Have a great evening!

Hello!

I cannot believe that we only have two weeks left of school!  I have been very impressed with the overall effort of my students as the school year comes to an end.  We only need to keep it up for a few more days!

Today in Language Arts we worked on creating a powerpoint presentation for our god/goddess.  I gave the students a list of resources they could use for researching.  I also allowed them to look a little on their own with my permission.  Many students did this over the weekend and are already putting their powerpoint together.  We will be working on this again in class tomorrow.  This project will be due on Thursday.  We will spend Thursday and Friday presenting our powerpoints to our classmates.  These powerpoints will also be used as study guides for the Greek Mythology Final Exam taking place on Monday.

Have a great evening!

Hello,

Today in Language Arts the students completed our unit on Poetry.  Students presented poems that they wrote in class.  I was impressed with the creativity, vocabulary, and poetic devices used by the students!

Tomorrow we will be starting our final unit of 7th Grade Language Arts, Greek Mythology.

Have a great evening!

Hello!

Today in Language Arts the students took their poetry tests.  Tomorrow we will be presenting the poems we created.  This project was assigned before break.  I have already graded the two poems that each student decided not to present.  At this point, I have everything graded except for the poetry tests that was taken today.  Tomorrow will conclude our poetry unit.

After tomorrow, we will be going on to our last unit of the school year, Greek Mythology.  I understand that it is getting warm and we are all getting excited about the end of the school year but I cannot stress the importance of making sure that we stay on task during these last two and half weeks.

I sent home progress reports for students that have a C minus or lower in my class.  I asked for parents to sign them.  Please be aware that these went home today.

Have a wonderful evening and stay cool!

Today in Language Arts we continued to analyze poetry.  Students worked in small groups to identify the theme of some of Robert Frost’s work.  They then presented their findings to the class.

We have now moved on to writing our own poetry.  The students were introduced to various styles of poetry.  This included a diamante, cinquain, haiku, a bio poem, and a limerick.  Tomorrow they will select two styles of poetry and create their own pieces.  I will be requiring a third poem.  This poem must be a bio.  The students will be given time in class to work on their poems and we will begin presenting them on Thursday.  We will not finish presentations in class.  Whoever does not present on Thursday will present on Wednesday when we return from break.

Our poetry test will be the Tuesday we return from break.  Please make sure that you know how to analyze a poem, know poetic devices, and how to create different kinds of poetry.

Have a great evening!

Hello!

Today we continued to focus on analyzing poetry.  We looked at a few poems written by Robert Frost including “Fire and Ice” and “The Road Not Taken.” First and Fifth hour will be writing the theme of the poem for homework.  Second and Third hour were able to finish all of their work in class and have no homework.

I hope everyone has the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful evening with a good book!
