Good morning families!

For Parents:

Yesterday was my day when I was allowed to go to both Cotter and Whitmore-Bolles to pick up supplies for your children to use to help them be successful while learning at home. I separated everything into bags for each child. Here is a list of what your child will be receiving next week:

  • Notebook of paper
  • Their journal from our classroom
  • Their family picture from our classroom (except one student whose picture I couldn’t find quickly – I was only allowed to be in the room for 30 minutes.)
  • Markers
  • Crayons
  • Chalk
  • Scissors
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Playdoh
  • Foam dice
  • Books
  • Dry erase marker
  • Dry erase plastic sleeve with their name to practice writing
  • Paper packet of pages to work on

It is very important that you do NOT let your child use up all of these supplies all at once. These supplies are designed to last you through the end of the school year. Please store them in a safe place and monitor/supervise your child while using the materials.

I need each of you to please send me a message on the Remind text today with your CURRENT address. I will be driving to all of your homes one day next week to deliver these supplies to your front porch. Once I have verified everyone’s addresses, I will let you know which day I will be dropping off your supplies.

Happy Numbers Update:

There are now 11 of you set up on Happy Numbers! All 11 children who are set up spent some time on the Happy Numbers site yesterday doing some great math learning activities!

If you have not had a chance to set this up for your child yet, PLEASE do it today. (See yesterday’s iBlog post for the directions and codes you will need.)

For the Kids:

Language, Literacy and Communication:

You are all doing wonderful with the letter Ss! I have received lots of pictures of items you have found that start with S, words you found that start with S, rainbow writing of practicing the letter S… keep up the awesome work! Here is a new video for you to practice the letter Ss today.

Math:

We are going to keep looking for patterns at home! This is a video with my favorite friend Grover where he is learning about a trickier pattern. Watch it:

Here is another great video where you will need to get up and move to make your pattern with Jack!

After you watch and follow along with the video, find something in your home to use to make your own pattern. Have your grown up take a picture of your pattern and send it to me on Remind.

For the Parents:

Good morning families!

My goal before this week is done is to make sure all of you have set up your child’s account on http://www.happynumbers.com. For those of you who have already done this, thank you! I have been logging in to see what the kids have been doing and how far they have been going. I took this picture last night to show you that so far, 7 of you have set up your kids’ accounts.

This is one screen where I can see what module your child is working on.

Setting up the website is easy! Here are the steps/instructions for how to do it.

  • visit the website http://www.happynumbers.com
  • Click “I’m a student”
  • Enter the class code which is 451891
  • Find your child’s name and click it
  • Enter their password: which is their first name
  • DONE!

Here is a reminder of the daily screen free schedule.

5 to 10 Minutes
Plan for Work Time (playtime):  Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with.  Children do this everyday with us at school.  It helps children learn to organize their thoughts. Adults make plans all the time to organize their thoughts (shopping lists are made before going to the grocery store, to do lists are made to help plan your day etc..).
Kids will tell you what they are planning to do/want to play with/how they will use toys at home.

1 hr.
Work time/Kids play WITHOUT ELECTRONICS  Kids can use toys to pretend play, build, and create.

15 min
Clean Up:  Kids clean up the mess they have made while playing. If you notice your child making too big of a mess during play, it’s ok to remind them to clean up what they have already finished using before they move on to the next part of their plan.

5 to 10 min
Recall:  Build your child’s memory of events by having your child tell you what they did while they played (ask “tell me how you did that” or “what did you do next?”)
Lunch Prepare lunch: have your child help you prepare lunch.  They can help with cooking/setting table- whatever seems appropriate for the meal time. At school the children normally assist with putting plates and utensils on the table as well as scooping their own food onto their plates and passing the food bowls to one another.

For the Kids:

Language, Literacy & Communication:

Today we are going to rainbow write our letter Ss. First, you can watch this video to help you remember how to make the letter S. While you’re watching the video, use your pointer finger to write the letter S either in the air, or on the ground. After the video is over, get some paper and as many different colored pens, markers or crayons as you can find and write as many letter S’s as you can. Take a picture of your colorful letter S and send them to Mrs. Laurus on Remind. (I’ll post them here tomorrow)

Today’s story is brought to you by a voice you all know and heard all the time at school…. See if you can guess who it is! (Note for parents: it is Mr. Liepe).

The Three Billy Goats Gruff read by Mr. Liepe

I have been hearing from many of you that you miss being able to play in the House Area/Kitchen Area at school. Today we are going to make these binoculars to help us have some fun with pretending – just like you enjoy doing in the house area! All you need is two toilet paper rolls (or a paper towel tube cut in half by a grown up) and either tape… or some rubberbands to hold them together. Look at these pictures for an example. If you’d like to, you can add decorations to your binoculars by coloring them, painting them or gluing colored paper to them.

No materials to make binoculars? That’s ok! You all have hands and can use those as binoculars just like this:

Math:

After you’re done making your binoculars, you can use them to go on a letter S hunt. Yesterday you found things around your house that starts with the letter S – like socks, shoes, sandals, stars, sailboats and more. Today, I want you to use your binoculars to find words in print with the letter S. You might find the letter S on pieces of mail that have been delivered to your house, in books you have, on food boxes/containers in your refrigerator or cupboard etc… Every time you find a letter S, make a dot or a tally mark on a piece of paper. When you’re finished with your S hunt, count how many dots or tally marks you made and write that number. That’s how many S’s you found today! Take a picture of your paper and send it to Mrs. Laurus on Remind. (I’ll post them here tomorrow).

Movement:

Since it is yucky and raining outside all day today, I have two videos for you to do to make sure you’re still getting some healthy exercise!

Good morning families!

For Parents:

Some quick updates for all of you:

  • I am going in to school this week. I will be getting my assessment information on all of your children from February and March. Since we were not able to hold any of our parent-teacher conferences, once I have this information I will be setting up phone call parent-teacher conferences with each of you to go over everything.
  • I will also be gathering supplies and materials to help your child continue learning at home. Once I have everything organized, I will let you know when I will be coming to your house to do a porch drop off of the materials. Please be aware: as badly as I WANT to see and hug all of your children, we have to maintain social distancing recommendations/guidelines. So please stay inside your house and keep your children inside your house as well. We can do waving from the windows though! <3
  • Please watch this video I made for all of the parents with some ideas and updates as well.
Information and updates for parents

For Kids:

Good morning boys and girls!

Language, Literacy & Communication:

Today we are going to continue to learn about our letter of the week: Letter S s. Please watch this video.

Take a walk around your house or your yard and see what items you can find that have a S sound at the beginning. Take a picture of what you find and send it to Mrs. Laurus on Remind.

I also have a story for you. This is a story that we have already read at school before, but you guys always ask me to read it again. Now that I have recorded it, you can watch/listen to this story as many times as you want!

Math:

Yesterday I wanted all of you to get on to http://www.happynumbers.com. There are a few of you who were able to get in to your accounts. I would LOVE to see more of these accounts get set up today, if possible.

If your grown up is having trouble setting it up, tell them to call Mrs. Laurus and I’ll help!

In the meantime, continue to practice on this website for just a few minutes. Also, I want to see how high you can count! Have your grown up take a video of you counting as high as you can and send it to me.

Science/Movement:

It’s supposed to be another nice day outside today. We are going to see what kind of animals we can find! Go for a walk around your yard, around the block, or through the neighborhood where you live with your grown up. While you’re on your walk, look for animals. When you find some, try to take a quick picture of it and send it to Mrs. Laurus. You might see squirrels, chipmunks, birds, insects, cats, dogs, and so on.

If you can’t take a walk today, then take a picture of your own pet. If you don’t have a pet, you can take a picture of a stuffed animal and send it.

Be prepared, because tomorrow we are going on a Bear Hunt!

In case you are missing your friends, here are some pictures of all of the AMAZING learning that has been going on at your houses!

Good morning families!

For Parents:

Since my last iBlog post, there have been some more changes that are important for you to be aware of as we continue our journey in online/remote learning.

Last week, Dearborn Public Schools teachers were informed we are no longer allowed to hold any video chats until further notice. This is due to inappropriate behavior that occured with middle school students. To read more about it, I am including the letter from Dr. Glenn Maleyko (superintendent of Dearborn Public Schools).

Click here for English: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XRPvpmUYfCR_sRq14PSTYoyatM8n2SiccuMqG2ZwzC0/edit

Click here for Arabic: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1suKCDlHiHF-VurgbE5kP7fCTx4N2LQEq-VKmquXwZF8/edit

The school district is working with the Dearborn Police Department to resolve this issue.

In the meantime – I will be pre-recording videos for your children to try to continue their learning the best way I know how to do at this time. I will keep you posted with more information on the situation as it becomes available.

Here is a reminder of the schedule to follow to make sure your child is also having time WITHOUT screens:

5 to 10 Minutes
Plan for Work Time (playtime):  Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with.  Children do this everyday with us at school.  It helps children learn to organize their thoughts. Adults make plans all the time to organize their thoughts (shopping lists are made before going to the grocery store, to do lists are made to help plan your day etc..).

For Kids:

Language, Literacy & Communication:

I have pre recorded two videos for you to watch today. The first video is Greeting Time: In our Greeting Time video today, you will hear me talk about our video calls and our new letter of the week. Also, I need you to remember to tell your grown up what item/material/toy you miss using at school the MOST and have them text me on Remind to let me know what it is.

I also have a new story for you to watch. Be on the look out for Ellie to make a silly face at you! You can make a silly face back at her too.

Remind your grown up to take a picture of you watching one (or both) of my videos and send it to me on Remind.

Math:

By now, your grown up should have gotten you signed up for HappyNumbers.com. It is a website, not an app. If your grown up was super busy, or forgot to do it, here are some pictures with directions for them…

Find the yellow post-it note at the top of Mrs. Laurus’ iBlog page. Click on the link that says, “Free Learning Resources”
Scroll down the “Free Learning Resources” page until you find this guy here and follow the directions to start your child’s Happy Numbers math account.

While you are on your Happy Numbers account today, have your grown up take a picture of the activity you are doing today and send it to me on Remind.

Science/Movement:

The weather is going to be BEAUTIFUL outside today. I want ALL of you to get outside to play TWO times today! While you’re outside, talk to your grown up about new signs of Spring you can see. In my backyard, I have a lot of yellow dandelion flowers popping up everywhere! (I am going to be working on getting rid of them soon.) Again, have your grown up take a picture of you playing outside today and send it to me on Remind.

For Parents:

Good morning families!

Yesterday was a HUGELY successful day! We were able to get 13 / 16 of you set up with your child’s new Google account so that they can start joining in to our Google Meets story times! Sometime next week I will also be doing live lessons for the kids on Google Meets as well. Please make sure before you “join” the meeting for your preschooler, that the device you are using is currently signed into their account and not the account of a sibling. It is important for attendance tracking purposes that each of your kids log in with their own account when joining meetings with any of their teachers.

A few quick reminders:

  • please save some toilet paper or paper towel rolls for next week’s learning as the rolls become empty these next few days
  • please save junk mail: grocery ads, flyers, newspapers, coupons etc for next week’s learning
  • Help ensure your child is engaging in some NO SCREEN TIME activities (chart to follow) daily
  • Join our live storytime at 3:00 PM today on Google Meets (code will be sent later on Remind)
  • Send Mrs. Laurus at least one picture or video on Remind of your child completing at least one the activities from either the chart below… or the academic activities listed in the Kids section of this post. If you want to send more than one picture, that’s great too! I plan to start adding your children’s pictures to the iBlog posts next week. There are so many great things going on in all of your homes and I want to celebrate ALL of them!

5 to 10 Minutes

For Kids:

Language, Literacy & Communication:

Today I have a new video of the entire alphabet for you to watch. This video uses the same song we sing every day at Greeting Time to practice the letter sounds. Make sure you sing along and try to make the sounds too.

We are also going to rainbow write our name today! Make sure you write both your first name and your last name Make sure only the first letter of your first or last name has a capital/uppercase letter. All of the other letters in your name should be lowercase. Use all of the colors you can find to write your name in as many colors as you can. This will help brighten up the gray skies we have outside today. Here is a picture of my name for you to see.

Our story today is going to be on Google Meets at 3:00 PM. Help your grown up remember to log you in when I send them the code.

Math:

We are going to do some more measuring today. This time, you will need to find 1 shoe from everyone who lives at your house. Talk to your grown up about how big or small each shoe is. Try to put the shoes in a line from the smallest shoe, to the largest shoe in your house. Here is a picture of my family’s shoes. First is Ellie’s (her shoe is the smallest), then Addison’s (hers is the next smallest), then Bella’s… then mine…. and the last/largest shoe belongs to Mr. Laurus!

Movement:

Today we are going to try a game inside your house that will be fun for everyone who lives there! Here is what you will need to play the game:

  • towel, blanket or sheet (the more people who are playing the game, the bigger the blanket or sheet can be)
  • pairs of clean socks that are rolled up into balls

You and your grown up (and other people who live at your house too!) will sit in a circle facing towards each other. Everyone will hold onto an edge of the towel, blanket or sheet (just like we do at school with our parachute!). Working together, start shaking the towel, sheet or blanket up and down.

Next, add some of the balls of socks to your towel, blanket or sheet. Now try shaking it to make all the balls bounce/fly off… like if you’re making popcorn!

Repeat and continue to add as many sock balls as you’d like. Remember, don’t stop shaking until ALL of the sock balls have been popped off. You can try to play this game while sitting, and while standing to see how it changes.

Science:

Today’s weather outside is kind of yucky (at least I think it’s yucky… some people might like it!) Look outside from your window and talk to a grown up about what you can see. What does the sky look like? Is the wind blowing? How can you tell? With a grown up’s permission – go outside for just a few minutes with them to look at / feel the weather. Can you feel any wind blowing? Does it feel cold? Chilly? Warm?

Go back inside and get out a piece of paper and some crayons. Draw a picture of what you and your grown up observed with the weather today. Tell your grown up about your picture and have them write what you said at the bottom. Snap a picture and send it to Mrs. Laurus today. 🙂

For Parents:

Good morning families!
I have all of the login information for your preschooler to be able to get on to Google Meet! This means that I need time to talk to each of you on Zoom or on the phone so I can get you and your child set up with their account. If you have not already done so, please text me on Remind to tell me what time works best for you. Mrs. Alzuhd will be available to help with translation between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM. I am available at pretty much any time that works for you. So please reply on the comment of this blog post, or text on Remind what time you would prefer.

Please remember to send Mrs. Laurus pictures at least once per day. I have to record who is and who is not doing activities as part of our district plan of continued learning. These pictures are how I track attendance and participation for the remaining weeks of school from now through June.

Once everyone is signed up for Google Meet, I will also be able to use that to track attendance and participation for who is on each meeting/video call.

Here is a reminder of the NO SCREEN TIME activities for your child today.

5 to 10 Minutes
Plan for Work Time (playtime):  Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with.  Children do this everyday with us at school.  It helps children learn to organize their thoughts.

5 to 10 min

Also, for parents if you could please start collecting a few items we will need for next week’s learning, it will help your child be successful in completing their assignments. We will need at least 4 empty toilet paper rolls (or paper towel rolls) so please save those cardboard tubes as you empty them from now through the weekend. Also, any junk mail you receive in the mail we will be using as well. This could be newspaper, grocery store ads, coupons, any piece of mail you would normally throw away or put in the recycle bin. Thanks in advance!

For Kids:

Language, Literacy & Communication:

We are going to focus on the letter R r today. Watch this video from Starfall and practice making the /r/ sound along with the video.

Now we are going to practice writing the letter R r. While watching this video, use your pointer finger and draw the letter in the air or on the ground. When you’re finished watching the video, it’s time to practice writing both R and r on paper. Take a picture and send your letter R r work to Mrs. Laurus.

For our story today, we are going to read and listen to one we have already read in class. Here’s Rosie’s Walk.

https://youtu.be/R3kNUTwJhf8

Movement & Science:

After taking a break from letters and stories, it is time to get your grown up outside with you to go for a walk! Before you go outside, don’t forget to wear your jacket… it’s a little on the chilly side today. You will also need to take a bag with you. It can be a grocery bag or something similar. While you’re on your walk (maybe around the block) look for signs of Spring. (Parents, point out new flowers blooming, buds on trees, insects you might see, grass becoming green again, birds chirping etc…) While on your walk, look for loose leaves and sticks to collect in your bag. We will use these sticks and leaves for math later. 🙂 Take some pictures on your walk of signs of spring you find and send them to Mrs. Laurus.

Math:

Once you’re home from your walk, wash your hands really good with soap and water. Drink some water and maybe even have a snack. Once you’re ready, get your bag of leaves and sticks. Today we are going to measure them! For more of a challenge, parents you can give your child a ruler or measuring tape and encourage them to line up their leaf/stick to see how many inches long it is. Otherwise, you can have your child put their leaves in order from biggest…. to smallest. You can do the same thing with your sticks! Send pictures to Mrs. Laurus of how you chose to measure and line up your leaves and sticks. Here is an example:

For Parents:

Good morning families! I am still waiting for confirmation that your children have the ability to log in to Google Meets from Dearborn Public Schools. As soon as I receive the information from the district, I will contact all of you with the information you will need to successfully log your child into our virtual meetings. Stay tuned for more on that.

I am going to be sharing this next part with you daily. It will look the same to you – but will be different each day for your child as they move through the steps. This is one of the MOST important things we do daily in preschool. Please note – during the times your child is doing this part of their day, they should NOT be watching TV, using a computer/laptop/chromebook/iPad/phone etc… This part is meant to be entirely 100% SCREEN FREE.

I put how long each part should last for. You can start this daily at whatever time is the most convenient for your family based on your families needs each day. Some of you might do this as soon as your child is awake… some of you might do this before lunch… some might do this after lunch… some of you maybe this will be later in the day after dinner. All of those options are perfect and will work with this schedule of events.

Work Time (No electronics or Screens during this time)

Now I am going to post our daily academic activities. I am going to try to break it down by subject area. PLEASE do NOT do all of these activities in one chunk (unless your child WANTS to). Typically, preschoolers can focus for 3-5 minutes at a time. If your child is able to/wants to focus longer, you can keep going. If your child doesn’t seem interested, or loses attention during an activity, then spread these activities out throughout your day.

For Kids:

Language, Literacy & Communication:

The letter we are going to review today is letter B b. Remember, the lowercase b has a belly!

Watch this video and practice saying the sound when you hear it

Now we are going to practice writing the letter B b. While you watch this video, put your pointer finger either in the air, on the table or on the floor and try to follow along with how to form the letter. When you’re done watching the video, get out a pencil, crayon, pen or marker and practice writing both B and b on paper. Have your grown up snap a picture and send it to me on Remind.

Remember to always start at the top when writing your letters

We are going to listen to one of your favorite stories… Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See.

https://youtu.be/WST-B8zQleM

We are going to use our story to guide the rest of our activities today. We are going to go on a color hunt!

Movement & Science:

It is time to take a walk around your house and look for colors! As you find things of different colors, you are going to sort them into groups. You might make groups of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black, white, grey, pink, and brown. Parents, please encourage your child when they are done creating their groups of colors, to create sub groups within their group. For example: in a group of green, they can resort the green items into dark green, light green and bright green. (This is observing and classifying for science).

Math:

Now you can count how many items you have in each group. When you are done counting a group, write that number and add your number to your group to help you remember how many are there. Remember to only count each thing one time. It might be helpful to move it over as you count so you know you already counted that thing.

Parents, when your child is done counting their items, ask them which group has the most and which has the least. Encourage them to refer back to their written number and have conversations about which numbers are bigger or smaller.

Don’t forget to send Mrs. Laurus lots of pictures! 🙂

Monday April 20, 2020

For Parents:

Good morning families!

There are some changes that begin effective today for us. I am going to include some directions here, along with pictures, that will hopefully help you to make this a little bit easier in getting your child set up with what they will need as we move forward with continuing to learn online and at home.

As a parent myself, it is VERY difficult to balance hands on activities and screen time during this time while most of what we are doing is online/digital. My goal is to provide you with online tools that are both age as well as developmentally appropriate for 4 and 5 year old children to use. This way, you can rest assured that during the time your child is online/using a screen – it is quality time spent that will help them be successful during their next year of school.

First things first, we will be doing story time… as well as live learning via Google Meets going forward. You will need to make sure your child has access to this app or website. You can download google meets to any device (ipad, Kindle, Phone, tablet etc…) by searching in the app store for Google Meet. It will look like this:

Picture of Google Meet icon

Please double check to make sure you locate Google Meet and NOT Google Hangout.

When it is time for us to use Google Meet, I will send everyone the meeting nickname via Remind. Today, we will do a trial run on Google Meet at 11:00 AM. I have meetings in the afternoon today and will not be available to meet with the students in the afternoon today. I am hoping to see all 16 faces at 11:00 AM today. 🙂

Last week when we held our Virtual Parent Meeting, we discussed letter of the week. You can see what letters we have already introduced in class by going to the “Pages” tab at the top of this iBlog site. We will begin introducing new / additional letters next week. (This week will be review.)

Pages tab

Another helpful tool for you on the “Pages” tab is the one that says “Free Learning Resources”. If you click that spot, it will open a page with directions on how to get your child set up with FREE accounts on ABC Mouse, Happy Numbers and Epic. These are all websites we will be using frequently as we move forward with our online learning. Please set up your child with these free accounts.

Lastly, just a reminder: for any parent who would like the ability to read my lengthy posts in a different language – if you scroll ALL the way to the BOTTOM of this page, there is a Google box that says “select language”. If you touch the arrow, you can choose Arabic (or any other language) and select it and it will automatically translate this page into the language of your choice.

The box to change the language on this page.

For Kids:

Watch the above video. Sing along and have your grown up take a short video of you practicing your letter sounds to send to Mrs. Laurus on Remind.

Happy Numbers

Have your grown up get you into your Happy Numbers account and start trying out some fun math games! Mrs. Laurus will get an email when you use it so I know you have been online.

Google Meet

Have your grown up get you logged in to our story time on Google Meet at 11:00 AM this morning! I can’t WAIT to see all of your smiling faces today!!

Good morning families!

Today we are going to be working on math as well as language.

For today’s activity, we are going to go on a Shape Hunt through your house. You will need to give your child a list of shapes to look for. You can make your own list by simply writing or drawing the shapes on a piece of paper, or you can print out this picture list:

Basic shapes for a shape hunt

If your child is already confidently finding and recognizing ALL of the above shapes, we are going to make the shape hunt more challenging by making it a 3D Shape Hunt! For the 3D Shape Hunt, you can use this picture list instead:

Shapes for a 3D shape hunt

In preschool, it is common for children to confuse square and rectangle. Make sure to emphasize to your child the difference being a square has four sides that are all THE SAME size. A rectangle also has four sides, but only two sides are short while the other two sides are long.

The other common mix up is between rectangle and triangle. This is because both shape names have the word “angle” in it. Your child is remember the term, but still needs more practice in recognizing the difference between two shapes.

Also, don’t be surprised if you hear your child use the term “rhombus” in place of diamond. We began regularly using the word rhombus in the classroom shortly before the school closure happened. The kids were VERY excited to be able to use a big, grown up sounding word.

As always, please send me pictures of the shapes / 3D shapes your child finds on their shape hunt today. I cannot wait to see everyone’s smiling faces!

If you have not already done so, please take a few minutes to complete the preschool parent survey at this link:

Thank you to everyone who has already completed the survey! Six families done…. ten families to go!
