Our District in the Hands of These Candidates

Dearborn Public Schools district is currently electing new people to run the school board. There are four candidates running for the 6 year-terms seats on the school board, however, only two candidates will win. The candidates are incumbent Fawda Hammoud and challengers Adel Mozip, Khodr Farhat, and Hussein Berry.

John Kazy, an 8th grader from Unis Middle School, said, “I think Hussein Berry would be the most fit for the job, since he was a member in Congress, and he’s been on the School Board.”  Hussein Berry was a Democratic House of Representatives member for two years from 2012-2014.

Fadwa Hammoud was elected in 2015 for a 1 year-term seat. She ran for the Dearborn School Board again in 2016, but this time for a 6 year-term seat. Hussein Jomma, an 8th grade student at Unis Middle School, said, “Fadwa Hammoud has a good chance on winning the election since she’s already been on the School Board for a year.”

John Kazy clarified, “Adel Mozip and Khodr Farhat most likely won’t win because they’re barely known in the district and they have almost no experience, but Khodr Farhat has learned English fluently in 7 years of being in America while being blind so he might have some experience with schooling.”  Khodr Farhat was blind since birth, and traveled from Beirut, Lebanon to America when he was 17. Farhat wasn’t able to speak a single complete English sentence at the time and has learned English fluently in those seven years of being in America.

Adel Mozip is a 30 year old software developer and a father of two kids. Mozip promises to increase academic achievement across the board and to improve college readiness for highschool students if he’s elected. He also promises to utilize technology to be more pro-active with parents and the community.

Hadi Aoun, an 8th grade 4.0 student at Unis Middle School, said, “Adel Mozip should have a seat at the School Board because what he promises is better for the future generations and is going to help lots of students get into college.”

Most people think that Hussein Berry and Fadwa Hammoud have the most experience with the Dearborn School Board.
