Student Rights

Now more than ever young people are standing up for their rights. Students all over the nation are speaking out against prejudices, sexism, racism, and bullying issues. In Dearborn, Michigan there are students protesting and trying to be heard.

According to the student code of conduct, the Dearborn Public Schools recognize that every student has freedom of speech. A student named Hamze Beydoun said that students should have rights like everyone else and mentioned the teacher that yelled at a student for not knowing how to speak English. The United States does not have an official language. He said he believes that a teacher shouldn’t even have gotten her degree and should be fired. I believe most teachers yell at students to get their attention and make them focus.

Ms. Alyssa Tomasik believes you have to try to speak English and said the teacher who yelled at the student for not speaking English should have tried to let him learn slowly and not made it a big problem. She also said that if a student is talking in a different language it’s ok as long as it is not disrupting other students. If they’re in the hallway it doesn’t matter as long as they’re not making problems and she said it’s ok if they get in groups and talk about their day in a different language.

She said that sometimes when students are disruptive that sometimes teachers need to raise their voice. Ms. Tomasik said she wants students to have free time or something that interests them, like journalism and leadership. She said the reason she might yell is because students are messing around or being disrespectful.

After that, I interviewed a teacher at my school named Emma Park. Mrs. Park said that if you’re trying to work on an assignment, you should try to speak english to the best of your ability. However, if you are just talking to your friends in school you should be able to speak a language you’re comfortable speaking. Mrs. Park said that she’s ok with transgender people. She has nothing against them. She said that people hate transgenders because of their lifestyle. Mrs. Park also said that 100 students did not want to stand up for their rights because they might have been ridiculed by their peers. This is a big issue.

In conclusion, from sexism, racism, and bullying issues, students and teachers are talking about the different ways to approach these problems. In Dearborn, Michigan our students are protesting and trying to be heard when they are harassed or witness harassments. They are trying to be heard when they’re taking away their own rights.
