Middle School Separation

Should gym classes be separated? Why is it that only in some middle schools, they have separated gym classes? Elementary and high school have mixed gym classes. Swimming classes should be separated because of religious reasons or just because you aren’t wearing as much as in a regular gym class. Many people say, that they don’t see a reason why anything else should be separated.

I interviewed Omar Nahshal, a Unis Middle School 8th grade student about this issue. “No, becuase its a silly thing to separate boys and girls in gym classes. I don’t think this is necessary and I don’t knowimg_2049-1 why we can’t play basketball or soccer together.” So Omar is against separate gym classes. Could middle schools change the separation in gym classes or will this be permanent?

Next I interviewed the boys’ gym teacher at Unis Middle School, Mr. Bazzi. He quoted with, “I think it would cause some issues with some of the kids, and they would refuse to come to class, or some kids may be uncomfortable with both genders in one class. Not really, it shouldn’t affect any gym teachers with both genders in one gym class.” Looks like Mr. Bazzi doesn’t have a problem with same gender gym classes.

So why do only middle schools have separate gender gym classes? Mohammed said with, “It makes no sense that high schools and elementary gym classes aren’t separated but middle school gym classes are. What’s so different about middle school than these other grade levels. We could have gym all year together if classes weren’t separated”.

In conclusion, the people I interviewed are against and for separated gym classes. Middle school gym classes shouldn’t be separated just because of opposite gender. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be able to play with both boys and girls. People shouldn’t be uncomfortable with both genders in the same class that you play sports like basketball, soccer, baseball, and volleyball in.

  1. Interesting perspective Mohamad. It would have been nice to interview some students who prefer to have gym classes separated by gender and their reasons why.

  2. I respect the fact that middle schools separate their children from gym classes by gender. I feel on the positive side with that. Some people are uncomfortable with both genders. But what doesn’t make sense is that high schools don’t separate their gym classes.

  3. I agree Mohamad Aboutaam, letting both genders to be in one gym class is wonderful. They all can get along and at this age guys and girls talk to each other a lot more then in elementary where kids thought their was couties. I don’t see any reasoning why they shouldn’t be together. The gym teachers are watching them at all times and letting them have fun. Hopefully, this will change sooner or later.

  4. I personally liked this article a lot. I liked it because it helped me notice a subject, that I don’t really pay attention to. I as well have an opinion. I also agree on the fact that gym classes in middle school shouldn’t be separated. I agree on this because it makes no sense that high school and elementary school have mixed genders in their gym classes, while middle school doesn’t. I understand why people might feel uncomfortable, but, middle school is meant to prepare us for high school. Which is why gym classes shouldn’t be separated. If middle school prepares us for the subjects in high school, I see no reason why it shouldn’t prepare us for the electives in high school.

  5. I Don’t think it should matter, if people don’t like that, there should be hours where it’s only boys, and another hour only girls, and for the people that don’t matter at all, they could go into the mixed classes. If it mattered to people they could talk to the principal or another staff that could change that. Also, get at parent for the staff and the parent to discuss what they want to happen.
