Advisory- A.M or P.M???

Advisory has been moved to the afternoon. Why? I will be answering this question, and so will the main witness. It has made so much controversy around the Unis Middle School. Some kids in the school, are regretting the staff’s decision. Do you regret it too? In this story, it mentions who I interviewed, there opinion, and answers.

I have interviewed Aya Ismail, a seventh grade 3.5 average student. Mrs.Haidar, a supervisor/helper especially when kids come from a foreign country. Marwa Jaber, an eighth grade student who is sure to excell in her NWEA scores. And last but not least, Mr.Farhat, the main principle of Unis Middle School. And take note that all of these interviewees are in Unis Middle School.

Wait, what is Advisory???

At this point,if some students from other schools,or in the community read this, they would be asking,”what is advisory?” Advisory is and was, everyone’s favorite “class”.Advisory is and was 17 minutes long, but enough time to do what needed to be done.It helped students who forgot to do their homework, and some students who just couldn’t wake up in the morning. It gives and gave students the opportunity to plan for the day ahead, or for the next day.

Interviewees!

11-15-16-004  Now, everything is planning for the next day, and no more doing homework or reviewing for a test. I interviewed staff members, and students to put in this essay. I first interviewed Mrs.Haidar, a supervisor and translator. Mrs.Haidar says,”morning advisory is a good time to take care of business for the day, and just to get warmed up for me and the students”.Now I ask for a counterclaim for being against morning advisory. Mrs.Haidar states a counterclaim…”P.M advisory is a benefit because students won’t think it would be ok to be late to advisory and now this is not a problem”.

11-15-16-005      I also interviewed a 7th grader with a 3.5 grade point average, who also agrees with advisory being better in the morning. She quotes, “ When we have advisory in the morning, we become more energetic. But sometimes we aren’t” Some advisory’s don’t have any work for students so they can do that work, so we end up very like, sleepy.” These are some of the fabulous highlights from my interviews.

Different Opinion!!!

11-15-16-003      Not all of the Unis Middle School don’t like advisory in the afternoon. Marwa disagrees with others about morning advisory being better. Marwa states that,” I actually enjoy morning advisory better because we would be basically dead in the morning.A lot of like, advisory teachers give us work, and in the afternoon advisory, we wouldn’t be tired to to do the work”.

Not many people like afternoon advisory. Many people do! Let us find out the real answer to advisory changing to the afternoon. Advisory is somewhere to sit and relax. Marwa also thinks there aren’t many other things that are good in morning advisory other than becoming more energetic. She quotes that,”the only way we will get energy in the morning, is to like to do at least a little work. And I don’t think all teachers give work.”

Main Witness…

Lastly, the main principle, Mr.Farhat. He quoted spectacular and reasonable decisions as to why advisory was changed to the afternoon. Mr.Farhat states,”we changed the advisory times to make sure that students went to all of their classes. And at the end of the day, students can reflect on what they did that day, and to plan for the next day. I asked,”are there anythings that you do not like about afternoon advisory?” Mr.Farhat says that there is nothing wrong, yet. This is new to them and they are still trying to figure things out. Another quote from Mr.Farhat was,”that no one would be forgetting their homework if they planned it in the afternoon advisory!!”

These are some of the fantastic main points of Mr. Farhat’s interview. Advisory helps all students. But getting used to something like this, is hard for some kids to get used to. For instance, some kids forget that there is advisory at the end,(mostly 8th graders). That leads them to be late, and that causes a spark for a new problem.

In conclusion, advisory helps all students with work, planning, and are many other things that cannot be named because of the amount there are! You should consider afternoon advisory, because of the reasons stated by Mr.Farhat. Morning advisory is also loved. It is gone though. Students have to get used to advisory in the afternoon.

  1. Thank you for this article! It helps parents understand what advisory is. Is it for doing your homework that you should have done the night before? Or is it 17 minutes to “wake up”? As a fellow teacher, I find it beneficial to have time at the end of the day to reflect on classes and assignments. It also gives students a heads up on the upcoming day so that they can plan ahead. Just my 2 cents!
