Freedom of Seating

Normal schools assign seats in class, but as of last week Unis Middle School decided to have assigned seating in lunch. This idea sounded terrible to most students but to some students seemed just fine with it. All of my friends hate assigned seats because if I want to sit on the same table as my friends and there is no room, I am not allowed to pull up a chair and sit. In the following paragraphs you will find out the various opinions of others on this topic.

Mrs.Brenda Coram

Many of Unis Students don’t like the idea of having assigned seats during lunch.Sixth Grade student, Sarah Awada, claims “I do not think assigned seats are necessary because we did not have any assigned seats last year and it does not impact anyone or anything. In my opinion, I do not think it will make a difference” The custodial staff also gave their opinions. Mrs.Brenda Coram, a custodial staff member likes the idea of having assigned seats and states that” I think assigned seats are helping improve behavior because Without assigned seats they can’t be accountable for their mess. They can leave their mess on a table and can move to another table and we will not know who did it.However, when they sit at assigned seats they are accountable for their mess.”

In my opinion assigned seats in class are fine, however when teachers tell the students to socialize during lunch we are  not be able to. Imagine you get in a  fight with one of your friends and they sit on the same lunch table, you will not be able to move and just have to deal with it. However, If you imagine that you are a new student with no friends and other kids kick you off their table during lunch, you will  still have an assigned seat so nobody can kick you off their table. Assigned seats are not something fun or playful, they are boring and classic and no other school in the Dearborn District  has assigned seating during lunch but our school.

Mr. Farhat

Mr.Farhat, Principle of Unis middle school, declares that, “ The administrative team decided to have assigned seats in the cafeteria to assist in maintaining a safe environment for all students during lunches. There are 300 students in the cafeteria at one time, and it is important that each student has enough time to eat, go through lunch lines and some time to talk with other students. Having assigned seats will allow for this and for better control during the 30 minute lunch period.”

Although Mr. Farhat makes a great point, some people disagree, because there are some points during school where we need to move our seats. Schools have taken it too far with assigned seats even during lunch! I understand that we need it in classes to have a better learning environment, but even during lunch where all we do is eat. To conclude, most people in our school disagrees with assigned seats during lunch and I also really dislike it .

  1. Assign seating during lunch is really bad it just makes the whole room louder because everyone was shouting across the room.
