The world is filled with many holidays. In the U.S, there are 17 important holidays the people celebrate. Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, New Year’s are some of the holidays celebrated. Many of the holidays are geared more to Christians than other religions. Most Muslims celebrate those holidays and they also celebrate their own, like Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha. Every religion can celebrate their own holidays or maybe others holidays too.
You may have heard of Veterans Day, Independence Day, and Labor day, which are also holidays. They aren’t very common with the people and people barely celebrate them. If so, why don’t we take them out of the calendar?
Rana, a worker at Big Lots stated, “If you take out a certain holiday that some people celebrate, then it’s like discrimination and can cause conflict because some people celebrate it.” Many people would feel left out because that holiday may be a part of history.
Every holiday has something to it. When people do parades and walk for some holidays, it may cost the government money. It helps keep a reminder of that holiday so that people don’t forget about it. Also, during those parades, the schools might be closed.
Amanda Naeem, an 8th grader at Unis Middle School said, “ More holidays added to the calendar, would have more school closings, which is what many people want.”
On MLK day, schools close, and many students forget about the value of why there is an absence. They think about how there is no school and the fun of it. There should be more awareness on why there are absences on holidays.
Not all people celebrate the holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter. So when there’s a break for those holidays, many people just stay home.
Shane Shockey, a middle school teacher explains, “ For most holidays that there is no school, many people do nothing and it decreases the importance.”
Also, there are breaks only for certain holidays which doesn’t make it fair. When it comes to the main holidays that Muslims celebrate, the Dearborn Public School System has planned out vacation days. However, some students in other school districts are probably not so fortunate and have to go to school on religious holidays.
It’s nice to have a break and celebrate our holidays, but when there is no fairness, then people should speak up. The holidays that aren’t as common should just be a holiday with no break.
The holidays that people ask for a break are the ones that should be added to the calendar. To enjoy all the holidays, they should be fair and equal with all religions, not just one or two.

I think that National holidays are pretty important, too. Some holidays celebrate our country or religious holidays. I believe that holidays really express a person and their religion. It is important to have holidays so that people can celebrate themselves or celebrate our country.

The U.S has 17 important holidays . For example Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and New Year’s are some of the holidays. In my opinion my favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving my family comes over and we eat and have fun. My least favorite holiday is st patricks day because i always forget to wear green then i always get pinched. Most holidays have backstories to them to explain why we celebrate them. In conclusion, i love holidays even though i don’t celebrate all of them the ones that i do i really enjoy.
I agree with Mr. Shockey and how people barely do anything or even realize what was so valuable that they had to have a break. I agree with the comment after Mr. Shockey, how holidays seem to be added for a certain group of people. Even though it’s unfair, I think it makes sense given the fact that majority of people in the US are Christians. I just think we could do a better job of adding other holidays with religious meaning the same way we did for Christmas, when not all people celebrate it. Of course I’m not asking to remove any, because like it said, it will cause conflict between people and groups.
I think holidays like Eid should be added to the calendar because even though most people don’t celebrate it its fair because not everyone celebrates half of the dates on the calendar yet its still there.
I agree with that bcz public holidays play a pivotal role in human lives. Nowadays people are busy in their hectic schedule they do not have enough time to spend time with their family and only for holidays family go over and eat together and have fun
