“Is equality a possibility?” That’s a question running through many people’s minds for such a long time now. We are in the 21st century and sexism is still a huge problem. Women are still being judged. Most people still believe that women aren’t as strong,as smart, and as hard working. Most people think women are just there to look pretty and only know how to do their hair and make-up.
Payday is a happy day for everyone…well almost everyone. For every dollar a man makes a woman only gets 77 cents. This may not seem like much of a difference, but it is. Take Jennifer Lawrence for an example, she wrote an essay asking why she is being paid less than her American Hustle male co-stars. Unfortunately,Jennifer did not get the raise she asked for, She didn’t put up a real fight because she did not want to seem unlikeable and spoiled. Not only is there this huge wage gap with Jennifer Lawrence but even in colleges. The median weekly earning of a doctoral degree for a man it is $1,686 and for a woman it’s $1,352. Women with Bachelor’s degree make $650,000 less than a men with the same level of education.
Does the name Shaquille O’Neal ring a bell? What about Sue Bird? Maybe? Well,Shaquille O’Neal is a male basketball player who gets paid $20,000,000 a year and Sue Bird is a female basketball player and she gets paid 87,000 a year. Sexism also appears in colleges, women athletes receive less than 26% of college sports’ operating budget. Nour Bazzi,an eighth grader, tried out for the football team and was called out by the boys.” They said ‘You’re
a girl you can’t play or throw’”Explained Nour. ”Just because you’re a girl, doesn’t mean you can’t play a sport ,sometimes girls could even play much better than a guy. ”She said.
Everyone has a different definition in their minds of what feminist means to them. ”They are strong and independent women who fight for what they believe in.”said Andrea.Gloria Steniem is exactly what Andrea was talking about. Gloria Steniem is a feminist organizer. She’s a spokeswoman on issues of equality. A quote of her’s is “Imagine we are linked, not ranked.”
However, there are people who believe that “There are some things women can’t do,” Ali Ishmail said.Salma also believes,”No matter what, there will be no equalities, because women expect so much out of men.”
Many people believe sexism is just one of the problems that will never disappear. What if women can play sports without being judged and taken seriously? Maybe one day women will be paid equally. What if equality is a possibility?

I believe this story is very true. Women and men haven’t been treated equally for as long as there was men and women. Throughout history men and women were treated differently. In sports women are paid less than men. Some studies show women are superior to men, for example women have a better memory than men, women handle stress better than men, women make better leaders than men and the list continues. But in my opinion we are all equal. Fatema Dabaja first hour.
Great observations, Wow! 😳
I believe that woman and men should always be treated equally. I think this because sometimes woman are more intelligent than men in most things. For example, I’m really good at football and I might be better at one boys in my school but the boys think that just because I’m a girl that I’m not good enough but I believe that I am.
One part that stood out to me was that the boys downed Nour. Girls have the ability to play “guy” sports, such as football, soccer, and basketball. They shouldn’t feel like thy can’t play it because of their gender. I think the same happens to boys, they feel as if they shouldn’t dance because it’s a “girl” thing. I also think everyone should get paid equally, why are men getting paid more than women anyways?
I personally believe that equality between men and women is not possible because we are created in the same ways, we are so different in so many ways. We don’t see things in the same ways, don’t think like each other and actually, don’t have the same brain. And it’s correct like that. I agree with Fatema Dabaja she has a great point.
