6th grade inventions activity

Posted by Erica Fulton on October 21, 2015 in Class News |

Below is the link for the invention activity we began this week. Please remember this activity has TWO parts:

  1. a 1 page typed paper about an invention
  2. a choice of either a power point, timeline on poster or a model of the invention you wrote about.

This is the activity sheet:  Inventions and History

For A day class both parts of this activity is due on November 11th, B day class is November 12th. (dates on the inventions and History sheet are incorrect)

8 class periods are devoted to research, typing the paper and creating one of the three projects.

We will display our inventions in each class.

This is worth a total of 15 (not 20) summative points!

Upcoming events for Technology

Posted by Erica Fulton on October 18, 2015 in Class News |

6th grade Exploring Technology:

For the next three weeks students will be focusing on what technology is and how we use it in our lives. For this unit students are working on a Pict-o-word poster in small groups and then they will be working on a research project. This project has two parts: a one page typed paper about an invention and then a choice of either a timeline or a powerpoint or a model of the invention. Links which may be helpful can be found below:

7th grade Foundations of Technology:

Students in this class have been working this past week on creating a label for a bottle. This activity is to help students understand how advertising influences our purchases, Students can make their labels for a pop, coffee, energy or juice drink. Each label is to contain eight items:

  1. A logo with a description and a promotion (win a prize)
  2. Nutrition Facts (required by law) which describes the serving size, calories and such.
  3. Ingredients (also required by law)
  4. A recycle symbol
  5. A deposit of 10 cents
  6. The bar code (what is scanned at the check out)
  7. Company information (a website or address)
  8. The size of the bottle (12 fl. oz. or 20 fl. oz.)

To continue our unit on advertising students will next choose a Public Service Announcement (PSA) and create a commercial using power point. A public service announcement does not sell a product but is used to inform the audience. To find examples of PSA’s take a look at the website below:

https://www.psacentral.org/home

We will work on these commercials and showing them to our class over the next two weeks. This is a summative projects (worth 80%)

8th grade Applications of Technology:

We are continuing our energy unit this week with students completing their research and then focusing on creating their energy folder.

Measuring skills

Posted by Erica Fulton on September 29, 2015 in Class News |

In Technology Education all grade levels are working on measuring skills. Measuring is a life long skill, meaning that even into adulthood we measuring using rulers, yard sticks and measuring tape.

Below are the fractions used within each inch:

6th Grade:

Students will practice their measuring skills in class by playing measuring games on the computer and making an actual ruler which they can take home to use.

7th Grade:

Students took a pre-test two weeks ago (ungraded) and have been practicing measuring in the classroom by measuring the length and height of tables, distance from the sink to my desk and diameter of a stool.

  • Ask your child to measure various widths, lengths, heights and distances within your home as well. Record the results of ten measured items (include the names of the items), sign the sheet and have your child bring in for 3 points extra credit.

Next we will work on a measuring packet and then put our skills to the test with an activity which requires students to measure and construct objects using construction paper.

8th Grade:

Students took a pre-test two weeks ago (ungraded) and have been practicing measuring in the classroom by measuring the length and height of tables, distance from the sink to my desk and diameter of a stool.

  • Ask your child to measure various widths, lengths, heights and distances within your home as well. Record the results of ten measured items (include the names of the items), sign the sheet and have your child bring in for 3 points extra credit.

Next we will expand our measuring skills by creating a power point which will teach others how to measure in inches.
