AUTHOR STUDY: Louis Sachar

Today, I do NOT want you to read Chapter 2.

Today, please just read through pages 12-18 of the study guide. You don’t have to read EVERY, SINGLE word, but just skim through and gather some interesting information about the author.

On a piece of paper (white printer paper is best, but any paper will be ok), please DRAW the author of “HOLES”. There is a picture on this iBlog, but you are welcome to search for other or better pics of him.

After you have drawn the author, please write interesting facts about him all around the picture. You can write exact quotes that he said or you can write interesting facts about him. PLEASE USE EXTREMELY NEAT HANDWRITING.

Your artwork does not have to be AMAZING, but please take your time and make it look good. Tracing is OK! You do not have to add color if you are good with shadows and shading with a normal pencil. Obviously, if your artwork IS amazing, I will be forced to give you extra credit points. 🙂

HERE IS THE STUDY GUIDE DOCUMENT:

“HOLES” by Louis Sachar

Today, we will be starting a new chapter book (novel) called “Holes” by Louis Sachar.

We will be reading this book until the Memorial Day/Eid holiday break.

THAT IS ONLY 9 SCHOOL DAYS AWAY! (so we probably will not finish reading the whole book)

For Monday, all you need to do is read Chapter 1 then answer the questions. You may write your answers on a sheet of paper … OR … you may type your answers on Google docs.

YOU MUST RESTATE AND WRITE COMPLETE SENTENCES FOR ALL YOUR ANSWERS. You do NOT have to write the question unless you are one of those A+ students who always insists on full points. 🙂

YOU DO NOT NEED TO SEND YOUR ANSWERS TO ME … YET … unless you are struggling and need help.

HERE IS THE BOOK!

HERE ARE THE QUESTIONS FOR CHAPTER 1:

FRIDAY

COMPOSITION BOOK PAGE #2

First – READ! Read the bottom half of the page.

Neatly copy the five sentences AND the web. Use words from the web to fill in the blanks of the sentences.

If you want FULL points, you must then add a new “pend/pens” word to the web and create a new sentence using that word. (7 total words and 6 total sentences)

COMPOSITION BOOK

Your NEW “composition book” for Report Card #4 will be due at the beginning of June. We will probably do a new page every Friday. You may start a new composition book in Google docs or you may write pages in a notebook … BUT … if you write in a notebook, you will have to take pics of ALL the pages and send to me at the end of the year.

PAGE #1

Read through all the examples of modern slang. Choose AT LEAST 5 and write interesting, creative sentences for those 5. More than 5 would be better, especially if you want full points. Please highlight the slang words in your sentences.

Examples of Modern Slang

Slang is changing all the time, but here’s a list of modern slang terms:

  • BAE: A term of endearment, meaning “before anyone else,” used between romantic partners that can also be used between close friends.”Bae, you’re the best.”
  • Bye Felicia: A fast way to tell someone to go away. This term comes from the 1995 movie Friday.”I know you’re just copying my style. Bye Felicia.”
  • Coin: Another way to refer to money.”She’s about to earn some major coin.”
  • Dying: Something that was so funny, you died laughing.”OMG. This stand-up is hilarious. I’m dying.”
  • Epic: If somewhat was “epic,” it was highly enjoyable.”His latest novel was epic.”
  • Extra: If someone’s “extra,” it means they’re way too dramatic.”She’s always acting like she LOVES language arts, but only in front of the teacher. She’s way extra.”
  • Fierce: Usually attributed to Beyonce, “fierce” signifies a strong, independent person.”I love her to death. She’s so fierce!”
  • GOAT: Current usage is actually a compliment, as this is now an acronym that stands for “greatest of all time.””I don’t care what you say, because Tom Brady is the goat.”
  • Lit: If something is “lit,” it means it’s super cool or “on fire.””Last night’s party was lit.”
  • Low key: If someone or something is “low key,” it means it’s being done under the radar or they don’t want anyone to know.”I low key love Imagine Dragons, but don’t tell anyone!”
  • On point: Outstanding, perfectly executed.”Her accessories are on point. She looks great.”
  • Read: To “read” someone means you’re calling them out for their bad behavior.”Wow. Stefon read Amy for being fake at last night’s dinner.”
  • Salty: Angry or bitter about something.”Why are you so salty? I said I would share if I win the lottery.”
  • Savage: Someone who “roasts” people nonstop and doesn’t care what others will say.”Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue on Donald Trump last night was savage.”
  • Ship: Short for “romantic relationship,” sometimes used as a verb.”Everyone wants to ship Edward and Bella, but they say they’re just good friends.
  • The tea: When someone is dishing “the tea,” they’re gossiping, particularly with the juiciest or most dramatic gossip.”Let’s call Wendy. She always has the tea.”
  • Thirsty: If someone’s “thirsty,” it means they’re a little too eager or even desperate.”Look at the way she dressed for their second date. She’s way too thirsty.”
  • Throw shade: To “throw shade” means to insult or say something unkind about someone.”I can’t believe he said that. He just threw some serious shade.”
  • Woke: Slang for “awakened,” as in being highly aware of social injustices.”If you’re so woke, why didn’t you vote?”
  • YOLO: An acronym for “you only live once,” encouraging people to seize the day.”Of course you should go on that trip to Dublin! YOLO!

This CER is NOT DUE today.

You will have to write the FINAL COPY of the CER on Monday on Google Classroom. BUT … please look over the prompt and the evidence (quotes) and the reasoning and start DRAFTING your CER on a piece of paper.

HINT: Only two of the quotes and two of the reasonings are good choices.

PROMPT: Describe TWO ways the author, Mackenzie Carro, supports the idea that binge-watching all the time is problematic. Use two quotes from the text and two reasoning in your OWN words to answer this prompt.

CHOOSE ONLY TWO OF THESE QUOTES:

  • Another significant quote from the author is when she includes a suggestion from a doctor: “Dr. Danish Alam … recommends deciding at the start of the week how much time to dedicate to shows and videos” (Carro, page 23).
  • According to the text, it states, “Zoning out with a good show can help you relax and take your mind off your worries for a while” (Carro, page 23.)
  • The author writes that, “A 2017 study found that people who binge regularly are more likely to be chronically tired because they stay up later” (Carro, page 23).

CHOOOE ONLY TWO OF THESE REASONINGS:

  • This quote is important because zoning out means to turn your mind off and just take a break from overthinking everything so much.
  • The fact that an expert (a doctor) suggests setting a time limit on binge-watching supports the idea that binge-watching can turn into a serious problem.
  • Being chronically (constantly) tired leads to sitting around doing nothing all day which is clearly unhealthy. After all, sitting is the new smoking.

DON’T FORGET THAT YOU WILL HAVE TO BEGIN YOUR CER WITH YOUR CLAIM (restating the prompt).

IF YOU NEED ANY HELP CHOOSING YOUR QUOTES AND REASONINGS, PLEASE E-MAIL YOUR ELA TEACHER!

VOCABULARY

HERE ARE THE VOCABULARY PAGES YOU WILL NEED FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT:

CHOICE 1 (A+)

Carefully read the vocabulary pages for “The Truth About Binge-Watching.” Create flashcards for the five “Binge-Watching” vocabulary words – the cards do NOT need to be neat or colorful. STUDY! Make a video of someone in your family testing you. The family member will say the word and you will IMMEDIATELY say the definition (for all five). You must have the definitions MEMORIZED. SEND ME THE VIDEO.

CHOICE 2 (A-)

Choose three of the vocabulary words and create THREE Google Slides. Each slide should have the word, the definition, and a picture. You will receive extra points if you have sick fonts, animations, moving images etc. so you COULD earn an A+ if you pick this choice. SEND ME THE SLIDES.

CHOICE 3 (B)

Print out page 3 from the vocab pages and write your answers neatly and completely then send me a pic of your work. If you can’t print, please write everything out on a sheet of paper and send me a pic.
