Week of December 10

Happy Sunday!

It’s been a great weekend and I hope everyone is rested and ready for the 2 weeks before winter break. Please make sure students are getting enough sleep these next 2 weeks, because cranky students make the short weeks before the break seem extra long.

REMINDERS:

  • Late start on Wednesday
  • PTA Meeting Friday at 9
  • Arabic School Registration this Friday from 12 – 5 p.m. in the Main Lobby
  • Please please please send students to school with a jacket and accessories! Outdoor recess can get bitterly cold without a warm coat.
  • Healthy snacks are provided by the school Monday-Thursday. Do no send chips, cookies, donuts, etc. with your child. If they are graving the sugar, let them have it at home after school.

That’s about it. Have a great remainder of your day.

Week of December 3

Good Sunday morning!

Reminders:

  • Scholastic Book Fair is this week
  • Wednesday is picture retakes for students who missed the original picture day
  • Friday is Movie Night with Incredibles 2
  • Science test coming up soon. We have the last section to go over and then we will take our test next week.

We had our November PBIS party on Friday and please encourage your students to continue the good behavior for our December celebration. Thank you parents and guardians who sent in snacks for our party buffet. We filled our bellies and relaxed in front of a movie.

Please continue pushing your child and helping to shape them as the awesome human beings they are meant to be! Have great rest of your weekend.

Week of November 26

It’s Sunday night and I had a great break! I am betting everyone else did too, or at least hoping everyone did.

Reminders:

  • Winter is upon us! Please make sure your child comes to school bundled up, because we plan to take advantage of outdoor recess until it’s below freezing.
  • If your child is truly not feeling well in the morning, please assess the situation and keep them home if they will not be able to focus and learn at school. I would rather have them back when they are germ free and ready to participate in learning.
  • Healthy snacks only! The school provides fresh fruit or vegetables Monday-Thursday, so please keep all chips, cookies, and candy at home.
  • Spelling homework should be done weekly and math homework nightly.
  • Have your child spend 15-20 minutes a night working on iReady or Zearn for reading and math practice.

I hope to see everyone bright and early tomorrow for a full week of learning!

Week of November 19

Good early morning!

I am writing from my phone, so please excuse any grammatical mistakes. My laptop decided to do a L O N G update as I sat down to get to work.

REMINDERS:

  • Monday is our field trip to experience and learn about the Underground Railroad
  • Tuesday is a full day of learning
  • No school Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
  • No homework this short 2 day week

Here’s a look at our new writing process poster. Students are at the Generating Ideas, Rehearse, and Plan stages. After break we will soon begin drafting. I am excited to see their literary informational books!

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving Break! I know I’m thankful for 5 days with my little one, especially now that we both are over whatever cold/sinus infection we were fighting. Happy Monday!

Some photos from this week

Three groups have finished their 2nd set of books in class. We are moving on to new topics and genres!

Here we are hard at work on our TEXT DEPENDENT ANALYSIS.

“Hey Mrs. Zastrow, that’s a cute poster, but it’s not right,” said a 5th grade student. So we decided to look for inconsistencies in the poster and really show what we learned about our solar system. I was impressed with their keen eyes.

Finally, it snowed. And we were one of the only brave souls to stomp through the wet, fluffy, beauty of it. Yes, snowballs were toss, but we agreed to keep everything below ours heads.

Week of November 12

Happy super early Saturday! I have a busy Saturday planned of grocery shopping, visiting friends for lunch, and then the UoM game at my in-law’s house. So here I am at 5-6 in the morning making sure my students’ families are updated. I love my students, even on the weekends.

REMINDERS:

  • Parent-teacher conferences continue on Tuesday and Thursday. Please be on time or even a few minutes early.
  • I will make a book order Friday if anyone has anything they want to order from Scholastics.
  • PLEASE make sure students come to school with a jacket, scarf, gloves, and appropriate shoes. The weather is changing and as long as the temperature is above 20 and there is no rain, we will be having outdoor recess.
  • Permission slips and money for field trip needs to be turned in.
  • Canned food drive is happening – if you have cans you can donate, please send them with your child.

Have a great weekend!

iReady Should Be Done Daily

iReady is a great source for students. It starts with a diagnostic test and then customizes lessons based on your child’s level. The students have been asked to do at least 15 minutes a day and if they don’t have access at home, then to read 15 minutes that night.
However, many students and parents have mentioned that they are having a hard time logging into iReady through Clever on their home computers, chromebooks, or tablets. Please try the following and if it doesn’t solve the issue let me know.
  1. Students will need to go to Gmail, the student must log in with their @dearbornschools.org account, if someone else is logged into gmail/google the Clever link will NOT work.
  2. Once the student has logged in with their @dearbornschools.org account, they can go to the For Students link and click on the Clever link. It may ask them to sign in again, please do.
