Here’s to Our Little Heros

I saw this and had to repost it! Please give your children extra love and thank them for being such great children! We miss them!

“Everyone is applauding everyone but our children. These little heroes have stayed indoors more than they’ve ever known in their lives! Their whole world has literally been turned upside down and they don’t know why. All these rules they’ve never known. Not being able to see family or give hugs. Vacation, sports and activities, playdates and schools canceled. Adults talking about others becoming unwell, news reporting death after death. Our poor children’s minds must be racing. Everyday their resilient little bodies get up and carry on despite all that’s going on. So here’s to our little heroes: today, tomorrow, forever!”

Enjoy this beautiful weekend! Don’t forget to check your porch for the green school supply bags.

Learning Activities for Wednesday, April 29

Literacy Activity

Today we are going to continue learning about the letter Rr. After watching the letter Rr video, I would like you to draw a picture of 5 things that start with the letter R. Some ideas: rainbow, rabbit, rock, etc. Please share your pictures with me.

Math Activity

We are going to practice counting today. We are going to count in a different way. Backwards! Today you will learn how to count backwards from 20 down to 0. Let’s try it!

Read Aloud/Math Activity

Let’s listen to the story, The Little Mouse, The Red, Ripe Strawberry, and The Big Hungry Bear.

After reading the story here is an activity idea you can do with your child. To do this activity you will need….

  • chocolate chips/beans
  • red and green paper or you can draw and color a strawberry shape
  • scissors to cut out strawberry shape
  • tongs
  • markers to draw strawberry shape
    • You can use the number cards you made for Monday’s math assignment

1. Strawberry Seed Pick Up Game

For this activity you first need to make a big strawberry! You can just hand-draw your own and color it.
Next you need to cut up some paper into little cards (If you completed the math assignment from Monday, your cards are already completed). Write a number on each card 1-10 and put them all in a big pile.

Once your strawberry and cards are made… you can start playing!
Flip over a card from your pile. Read the number aloud. Add that number of “seeds” (chocolate chips or beans) to your strawberry using your tongs. If you do not have tongs, your child can just use his/her fingers.
Once you finish one card, clear off the strawberry. Tell your child they can be the Big Hungry Bear and eat a few chocolate chips… and then flip over another card and start again!

This is an excellent activity to work on hand-eye coordination and build fine motor skills while also practicing number recognition and 1:1 correspondence. Little ones could skip the tongs and just use their little fingers to pinch the chocolate chips and move them onto the strawberry.

Worktime

Turn off those screens and play with some toys, color, paint, anything you can think of!

Planning Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with.  Children do this everyday with us at school. It helps children learn to organize their thoughts. Adults make plans all the time to organize their thoughts (shopping lists are made before going to the grocery store, to do lists are made to help plan your day etc..).

Kids will tell you what they are planning to do/want to play with/how they will use toys at home.

Work Time (45-60 minutes): During work time kids play WITHOUT ELECTRONICS.  Kids can use toys to pretend play, build, and create.

Clean Up (about 15 minutes):  Kids clean up the mess they have made while playing.

Recall Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s memory of events by having your child tell you what they did while they played (ask “tell me how you did that” or “what did you do next?”)

Learning Activities for Monday, April 27

Literacy Acitvity

The letter of the week is Rr. Watch the following link about the letter Rr. Then practice writing the letter R.. First write the uppercase R five times and the lowercase r five times.

Math Activity

Today we are practicing some math skills. For today’s activity you will need:

1-3 pieces of blank paper

markers,crayons,or anything to write with

scissors

The first thing you need to do is take your paper and fold it to make about 16 squares.

Next you are going to write numbers and counting dots to match the numbers, like this:

Have your child cut on the creased lines so you have two groups… one with counting dots and the other group with the numbers, like this:

So now your child will match the number card with the correct amount of counting dots.

Please be sure to start with numbers 1-5 then move to 6-10 and to challenge children who are ready, you can add higher numbers like 15, 22, etc.

Also to challenge students who are showing interest in reading you can add the number word and have them match the number word to the correct number and counting dots, like this:

Please remember to only challenge your children with higher numbers or number words if they are showing that they can count and identify numbers from 1-10 easily and consistently.

REMEMBER TO KEEP THESE CARDS TO USE LATER AT ANYTIME! IT’S IMPORTANT FOR CHILDREN TO KEEP PRACTICING SKILLS!

Class Video Chat

Thank you for your patience as we all figure out this new technology! Our first class video chat will be next Thursday. (Thursday, April 30) at 2pm. Mrs. Hamid and I are so excited to see everyone’s faces and hear your voices! This will be our practice so we can all figure out how to use the website. We will have weekly virtual class meetings on Thursdays at 2pm for the remainder of the school year.

Due to security concerns the district does not want us using Zoom, we will be using google meets for our virtual class meetings. Google meets can be used on a phone, ipad, or computer. I tested it out on all of my devices first to make sure. On your phone or ipad you can access it from the internet browser or download the app. I downloaded the app because I felt it was easier.

To access Google Meet

  1. In a web browser, enter https://meet.google.com.
  2. Click Join or start a meeting.
  3. Enter a nickname – I will send the nickname code out on Remind before the start of the meetings.

If you need help with Google Meet message me and I can help you.

Literacy Activity

We are going to continue working on the letter Bb. Watch the following song. After watching the song, practice writing 5 uppercase B’s and 5 lowercase b’s. Then draw 2 pictures of things that start with Bb and write your words under your pictures. I can’t wait to see see your pictures.

Math Activity

Today we are going to work on recognizing and naming the numbers 1-6 by making math monsters!

What you’ll need:

  • Paper
  • Crayons (or something to write/draw with)
  • One dice, playing cards 1-6, or pieces of paper with 1-6 written on them.
Examples of things you could use to choose numbers.

Directions:

  • Have your child draw a large oval on a piece of paper. This will be the body for our math monster!
Make sure there is space around the oval to add body parts!

Next, have your child roll the dice or choose a number card. For each number that they pull, your child will add a body part according to this list:

  • 1 -add an eye
  • 2 – add an ear
  • 3- add an arm
  • 4- add a leg
  • 5- add a mouth
  • 6- add a nose
I rolled a 6 so I added a nose!

Roll or pull a number card at least 10 times, but you can do more if you want! When you are done color your picture and give your monster a name. Have your child try to write the name on their paper. Parents can help with spelling, but please make sure your child is the one writing the name.

When you are done send me a picture of your monster. I can’t wait to see all your math monsters.

Learning Activities for Monday, April 20

  1. Letter of the week is Bb.

Some words that start with Bb are bird and bike. Can you think of 5 words that start with the letter Bb? Have mom or dad help you write your words and send me a picture of the words you wrote. I can’t wait to see your writing! Then practice writing the uppercase B 5 times and the lowercase b 5 times.

2. Math Activity

Today we’re going to work on some shapes! The three shapes we will look for are square, triangle, and rectangle.

A square has four sides that are the same size and four corners.
A rectangle can be long or tall. It has four sides like a square, but they are not all the same size.

A triangle has three sides and three corners.

First, draw or mark out an area for your child to place items/toys like this:

This example is tape on the floor, but you could draw the shapes on paper or use sidewalk chalk on the driveway as well!

The goal is for your child to go around the house and collect items that are squares, rectangles, and triangles. They can draw pictures if the items are too large or heavy (ex. A door or tv). When they find the items have them say the name and count the sides.

“These blocks are squares. They have 1,2,3,4 sides!”

As they find the shapes and count the sides, have your child place the item in the corresponding shape mat you made like this:

When you’re done send me a picture so I can see all of your shapes.

Below is a shape song.

 https://youtu.be/AnoNb2OMQ6s

3. Read Aloud- Owl Babies

https://youtu.be/TPQRiSTYFHo
After listening to the story, draw a picture of your favorite owl baby. Who is your favorite owl baby? Tell me why the owl is your favorite. Have mom or dad help you write your words. My favorite owl baby is Bill because he is tiny and loves his mommy. Please share your picture with me.

4. Movement Activity
