Mini-Project: Rivers

Students will be assigned two moving bodies of water (rivers), and they will research them online for a few characteristics on each, create a PowerPoint on each characteristic for each river, and then write a passage comparing and contrasting these two bodies of water. This will be a two-day assignment carried out in school as a summative classwork. (See attachment)

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2016, TEST: CHAPTER 1, SECTION 1: THE ACTIVE RIVER

Students will be evaluated upon the characteristics or features of an active river in terms of how moving water shapes the land, the influences of the water cycle, variables that affect how fast a stream can cause erosion, and how rivers tend to change over time as they age.

It is highly recommended that students study their graphic organizer on the assigned concepts, their double journal entries, their study guide (given & practiced on Thursday), and as always, the section review on page 11 as a self-test to determine how well they are prepared for the test/quiz on Friday.

STUDY! STUDY! STUDY!

Using the “Water on Earth” textbook, students need to complete, read, review, and study the several concepts on the active river pages 4-10 in their graphic organizer (term, definition, scientific sentence, and example/symbol) that we worked on in class today as means of being better prepared for our Friday’s test/quiz.

The concept list include: erosion, water cycle, tributary, watershed, divide, channel, and load.

ATTENTION 4TH HOUR:  SINCE YOU ARE BEHIND, MAKE SURE TO COMPLETE THE FRONT SIDE OF YOUR DOUBLE JOURNAL ENTRIES ON ACTIVE RIVER STARTING ON PAGE 4.

Pretest: Water on Earth

Per our district initiative, students will be evaluated upon their prior knowledge on the topic that is to be discussed, learned, and reinforced. In this case, our new topic is “Water on Earth”. Note that the scores that the students receive on this evaluation DOES NOT count against their grades since it is merely accessing their prior knowledge of the topic to be discussed in the next few weeks.

TEST: MONDAY, JANUARY 25, 2016: CHANGES IN CLIMATE

Students will be evaluated upon what they’ve learned about changes in our climate over time and the variables that have contributed to these changes.

Students are highly recommended to study their R.A.N. Strategy that they created and were graded on it in the classroom based on their performance and information gathered. Moreover, all students who have been present received a study guide, titled directed reading, to further assist them in learning the material. On Friday, we will do one more review to be better prepared for the test/quiz on Monday!

REMINDER: WEATHER FORECAST PROJECT!

If you have failed to turn in your weather forecast project on time, it is not too late. It’s far better to earn a partial credit rather than no credit at all since this assignment is a summative evaluation, and it will impact your grade by the end of the marking period next week.

NOTE: NO PROJECT WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER JANUARY 28, 2016 SINCE THE PROJECT WAS DUE ON THE 19TH OF JANUARY 2016, AND THE LATE PERIOD RUNS THROUGH JANUARY 28, 2016!
