Chapter 4, Section 2: The Inner Planets

Students will have an opportunity to learn about the inner planets, namely, Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. We will identify each planet’s pattern of rotation and the length of each along with each period of revolution, as we will focus on what makes our planet, Earth, suitable for supporting life as we know it.

Students feel free to print, complete, and study the following attachment on the inner planets.

Extra Credit Project: The Solar System (Due Date: Thursday, June 8th, 2017)

Students who wish to earn extra credit may choose to take an active part and participate in the creation of a poster-project based on the solar system, using the attached, simplified outline as a reference point on its requirements. Actual images need to be used for this project. Students may use Google Images to guide them with this process. The characteristics must include the following:

The Sun: Size, composition, and name of each layer and its description.

Each Planet (Six Features): rank (position), size, composition, atmosphere, rotation, and revolution.

Note that this project’s due date is Thursday, June 8th, 2017, with no exceptions.

Do remember that it is an extra credit assignment; thus, no additional time will be granted, regardless of circumstances, and no submitted work will be accepted after the due date.

Mini-Project: The Layers of the Sun

The students will construct and explain orally the layers of the sun by using their textbook, notebook, pencil, construction paper, scissors, ruler, and glue to simulate the makeup of the sun based on its characteristics.

Students are expected to complete this classwork with the allotted time given through Thursday, prior to the Memorial Day weekend.

Homework Reminder: Frayer Models

Students are to complete the five (5) assigned Frayer models on the terms below. Remember that each term needs to be defined in your own words after understanding its meaning, provide two characteristics, as well as an example or illustration, and a non-example on each.

Chapter 3, Section 2, The Sun: Our Very Own Star

Students will have an opportunity to learn about our star: The Sun. Students will focus upon the sun’s basic structure and composition, how it generates energy, and describe its activity and how this activity affects our planet, Earth. Students are highly recommended to take advantage of the following attachments and use them as their guides to help them better understand the subject matter.

REMINDER: THURSDAY, MAY 18, 2017: TEST: THE MOON, STARS, AND GALAXIES

NOTE: STUDENTS ARE NOT BEING TESTED ON SECTION 5 OF CHAPTER 4, SMALL SOLAR BODIES, SINCE WE WILL BE HAVING A TEST ON CHAPTER 4, SECTIONS 1, 2, 3, AND 5 AS WELL AS OUR SUN, SECTION 2 OF CHAPTER 3, TOWARD THE END OF THE YEAR AS A LAST TEST, AND NOT A FINAL TEST.

Students will be evaluated upon our Chapter 2, Sections 1-3, Stars, The Life Cycle of Stars, and Galaxies respectively, as well as the moon, pages 110-114, in Chapter 4.

What to study? What to study? What to study?

1) Students are very highly recommended to study their classroom notes from our PowerPoint presentation, as well as any created notes through their strategy of choice for all sections.

2) Students are to study the key concepts and ideas in the chapter(s) that were selectively reinforced by the creation of the Frayer models or graphic organizer or mini-project, depending on the material studied and reinforced.

3) Students are to study any bellwork that was done in class, the end of each section review, because there are a series of reinforcement review questions to help them determine how well they understand the ideas and concepts in that section. Go over ALL of them in each section, as well as the chapter review that we normally complete on the day before the test.

4) Students are to check the iblog for any previous and pertinent attachments that are related to the Chapter 2, Sections 1-3, and The Moon(s), Chapter 4, Section 4, dating back to May 01, 2017, since the classroom teacher has informed the students that they are responsible for any posting and to stay up-to-date on the iblog postings.

SIXTH HOUR (6TH) HOMEWORK: CHAPTER 2, SECTION 2: REINFORCEMENT

BELLWORK #32

Briefly answer the following questions.

1) Contrast a white dwarf with a red giant in terms of their                                 characteristics.

2) Examining the H-R diagram, explain how a typical star moves on the diagram over its lifetime.

3) When we study the planets, we use Earth as our reference planet for comparison purposes. Identify 4 reasons that our Sun is used as a reference star when discussing other stars.

4) Using a flow chart, illustrate the life cycle of what happens to an average-sized star such as our own compared to that of a blue (hot) star such as Naos.

5) In addition to showing the life cycle of a star, what other main purpose does the H-R diagram reveal?
