Week of December 7th

Can you believe we only have 2 weeks before winter break???? We only have 23 days until 2016! Wow!!!

Literacy Unit: What’s for dinner?

Reading: We will be reading Our special Potato Pie; Little Juan and the cooking pot; Grandfather Bear is hungry; and Crunch Munch Thanks a Bunch. 

We will create a menu sorting appetizers, meals, drinks and desserts. We will practice ordering from the menu. There will be a lot of role playing restaurant. (Note: Next time you go to a restaurant with your family, practice ordering from the menu (most menus are online now) with your child. When you get there, your child could place their own order. You will see the sense of accomplishment and pride beam from your child).

Strategies:

  • Comprehension: Review character and setting. Retelling the story (Beginning, middle, end), asking questions and sequencing
  • Accuracy: Identify the first sound in a word and the last sound in a word, and medial sounds in the word. Identifying a CVC (constant-vowel-constant) pattern (ie. pat, pit, pin), producing and expanding rhymes
  • Fluency: Recognize upper/lower case letters and sight words
  • Expanding Vocabulary: Reading from left to right, Reading from top to bottom, Read from the left page and move to the right page. Know return sweep when reading /writing a sentence, punctuation (period, question, exclamation mark), Author, Illustrator

Letter of the week: Cc (review the previous letters learned)

Sight word: have (Review: I, can, we, the, like, a, see, go, to, am)

Writing: We will order from a class created menu and write it out. Our whole group writing comes home Tuesday. Our individualized draft is created Wednesday. We revise/edit on Thursday. We publish on Friday. We will have a question or a complete sentence or both. Our sentence stems are:

Can I have____ and ___?

I will have ____ and ___.

Math: We will be working on lines of symmetry, 2d-3d shapes, identifying  numbers 0-40 and counting by 10’s and 5’s to 100. We will also practice combinations of 6 (0,6;  1,5;  2,4;  3,3) using a ten frame, a reknrek, an abacus and scatter mats.

Science: We will be investigating motion. We will be identifying items that push and pull. We will describe how they move: roll or slide.  We will also discuss how 3-d shapes move (ie. cylinder-rolls straight, prism/pyramids/cube-slides, cone-rolls in a circle form,

Social Studies: We will be having a social studies assessment this week. We will be assessing needs, wants, goods, service, trade/exchange.

REMINDERS

  • There will be a letter coming home for our Holiday celebration from the homeroom moms. There are requesting a monetary donation to help with the cost of the celebration. Refer to the letter for more information.
  • The scheduled holiday boutique shopping is for Wednesday, December 9. If you would like your child to participate, each item sold is for $2. Refer to the PTA letter sent last week.

Welcome back!

READING-Our theme for the next 3 weeks, Unit 4, is FOOD.

This week’s focus will be Where Food Comes From.

The stories we will read are Pizza Please, Apple Farmer Annie, and The goat and the chile patch.

GRAMMAR: nouns, verbs

WRITING: We will be writing a sentence using nouns and verbs. We will use most of the sight words we have learned to connect with foods from the story. Our sentence stem is: I go to the farm to see Annie____.

MATH-We will continue working up and down the number line with >  <  a given number. We will also roll and record using dice. We will graph our numbers.

We will also work with Creating and Extending a Pattern.

Home activity-Practice with >  <  a given number.  You don’t need any paper or pencil.  Ask, “What is a number > than 11?”  “A number 3 more than 16?”

Also, do some Interrupted Counting/Alphabet  “Give me the next 3 letters after L?”   “Next 3 numbers after 42?”

SOCIAL STUDIES-We will finish up Goods and Services,  Needs and Wants.  I will be assessing them next week on these concepts. We will also connect these ideas of how food goes from the farm to our table.

Review Literacy Unit: Wheels All Around 

Reading: We will be reading Duck on a bike, Thanksgiving mice, Happy Thanksgiving Biscuit!

Strategies:

  • Comprehension: Review character and setting. Retelling the story (Beginning, middle, end) and asking and answering  questions
  • Accuracy: Identify the first sound in a word and the last sound in a word
  • Fluency: Recognize upper/lower case letters and sight words
  • Expanding Vocabulary: Know return sweep when reading /writing a sentence, punctuation (period, question, exclamation mark), Author, Illustrator, spacing between words

Letter of the week: Review letters Tt, Ii

Sight word: Review: I, can, we, the, like, a, see, go

Grammar: Homophones: Multiple meanings: example: son-son, ate-8, right-write, etc. A fun game is on the link to your right>>>

Writing: We will continue to focus on space between the words. We write about our weekend and what we are thankful for.

Math: We will count 1-30. We will practice add and subtracting within 5. We will practice ordering numbers 0-10. We will also look at different ways to make numbers 6. Example 0+6=6, 1+5=6, 2+4=6, 3+3=6, 4+2=6, 5+1=6, 0+6=6.

Literacy Unit: Traveling Near and Far

Reading: We will be reading On the Go (non-fiction), Subway Train (poem), My Bike (poem), Timimoto (fiction), How a partridge got his canoe (fiction). We will continue to discuss forms of transportation and vehicles. We will discuss places to go (travel).

Strategies:

  • Comprehension: Review character and setting. Retelling the story (Beginning, middle, end) and asking and answering  questions
  • Accuracy: Identify the first sound in a word and the last sound in a word
  • Fluency: Recognize upper/lower case letters and sight words
  • Expanding Vocabulary: Reading from left to right, Reading from top to bottom, Read from the left page and move to the right page. Know return sweep when reading /writing a sentence, punctuation (period, question, exclamation mark), Author, Illustrator

Letter of the week: Ii (review the previous letters learned) We will blend “i” and “t” to make the word it.

Sight word: Go (Review: I, can, we, the, like, a, see)

Writing: We will continue to focus on space between the words. We will make a list of vehicle and categorize if they go on land, on water or in the air. We will also be able to write sentences independently using stems such as:  “We can go to the _(place)__. We can go by _(vehicle)_.”

Math: We will be working on greater than, less than or equal to. We will explore using measurement, using clues to identify numbers and review using a number line. We will also create a favorite color graph and identify the important parts of a graph such as a title, numbers and labels of a graph. We will continue to practice counting 0-30. We will practice counting by 10’s to 100. We will also practice adding ad subtracting 1, 2 and 3 to any given number.

Social Studies: We identify what is a good and what is a service. A need are items we purchase and take home. Examples of a good would be: food, clothes, refrigerator,  etc. A service would be someone doing something for you.   Examples of services provided are: barber, teacher, doctor etc. (We will eventually discuss what would they want to provide in the future: a good or a service?)

  • Parent Teacher Conferences will be Wednesday, November 18 and Thursday, November 19 (4:00-7:00)
  • Pasta for pennies will be due on Nov. 20th

Please Note:

  • Picture retake is Friday November 13, 2015
  • Your child will be coming home with 2 notes from Mr. Neff. It is regarding logging on to a program called MYON. One has a log in and password information and the other is the description of the program.  It is an amazing website to log in and have stories read to your child. It highlights words as it is being read. This is a really great resource being offered by our school and I encourage you to use it.
  • Make sure you read with your child for 20 minutes every night!

Week of November 9th

What a beautiful weekend! Hope our little ones had time to play outside before its gets too cold!!

New Unit: Getting around town

Reading: We will be reading A Bus for Us, Ways to travel, Turtle and the Rabbit. We will be discussing forms of transportation and describing vehicles.

Strategies:

Math: We will be working on greater than, less than or equal to. We will explore numbers using dice, dominoes and a number line. We will explore the use of a pan balance and review lighter and heavier. We will continue to practice counting 0-30 .  We will also practice adding one to any given number.

Social Studies: We identify what is a want and what is a need. A need are items used for basic survival. Examples of a need would be: house, clothes, water, food etc. A want are items that are one may wish for. Examples of wants are: video games, cupcakes, a doll, a ball etc.

REMINDERS

  • Please return the parent teacher conference reminder notes to confirm your time.
  • Pasta for pennies will be due on Nov. 20th
  • We are also running low on snacks. If you can donate some, that would be great!
