Due to the unexpected snow days, we are adjusting our party dates!
Our school wide 100th Day of School celebration will actually be on Monday, February 14th!!!! PLEASE remember we are encouraging all of Salina Elementary’s students to dress up like they are 100 years old! (ex. gray hair (baby powder in the hair, pretend glasses, sweaters that button, curlers in the hair, mustaches….. there are many ideas online.
The next day, Tuesday, Feb. 15th is our classroom Valentine celebration!!!! I really wanted to keep these two classroom celebrations separate. This is such a special day where we go the extra mile in telling our friends how much they mean to us! On this day, I am encouraging each child to wear red!!!! If your child wants to bring in Valentine cards or treats for their classmates, please remember the following….
We have 21 students. Please make sure your child brings for every student.
PLEASE only write YOUR child’s name on the valentines. It makes it so much easier to pass them out.
Only send in prepackaged candy or treats! NO cupcakes, chips, or cookies. They will be getting a special dessert at our party from me.
PLEASE do not send in an unopened box of valentines. Make sure each card is ready to go into a friend’s bag. This will make our Valentine giving so so so so much easier with 21 children 😉
Today, we took our spelling test for week 2!!! The children did an amazing job! You will see those come home tomorrow. Week 3’s spelling test will be on Friday!! Please continue to help your child practice.

We will continue to learn facts about the adorable penguin as we write about them! And….we will have our WEEK 2 spelling test on Tuesday morning! We will review tomorrow. BUT…..I will be sending home the new spelling word list for week 3 tomorrow. That test will be on Friday!

I hope you all enjoyed a fun and relaxing weekend! We had such a great week last week. I am looking forward to another incredible week of learning and fun!
We began learning about goods and services! We created goods from boxes, containers, craft materials…… We earned pretend money for doing our work. We used our money to buy the goods at our fun Friday Makers’ Fair. The children even decided to put some of their goods on sale for less money than they were asking. We had so much fun! Take a look at our fun way we learned about beginning economics.
Thank you for helping your child practice their spelling words at home last week! This week the new words will go home tomorrow! Our new word family is the -un family! (ex. fun, sun, bun, run) We will continue our research and informational writing about penguins. We will also continue learning about number operations with number bonds!
We have been learning and experiencing so many great things in kindergarten! Its been a little while since I have shared some pictures on the blog….so please enjoy the adorable pictures that follow our information about our spelling test.
Each week we get a new list of spelling words that features some sight words as well as a word family. Each Friday your child will have a spelling test on these words that will be graded. We make these fun as learning should be! Please, help your child by practicing the words with them at home each night! There are many fun and creative ways to practice spelling words at home that go beyond the pencil and the paper. These ways also engage their creativity and fine motor skills! Here are some fun ideas!
Make the words with play do or pipe cleaners.
Write the word in shaving cream on a cookie sheet or table.
Paint the words with water colors.
Write each word in a different color with markers.
Cut out letters from magazines to spell the words.
Use magnetic letters to spell the words.
Make a set of spelling words on index cards. Make a matching set. Then flip over the the cards to play a game of memory. As a pair is flipped over, your child needs to spell the word.
Here are the spelling words for Week 1
a word from the -at family. (This is a word I will chose to assess your child’s understanding of beginning sounds and word families.) ex. bat, cat, fat, hat, mat, sat, pat, that, rat.
Their first name and last name. (Spelled with only one uppercase letter at the beginning of their first name and one uppercase letter at the beginning of their last name. The rest of the letters should be lowercase.

We are also beginning to learn about goods and services. If you have any cleaned empty containers, boxes, string, twist ties, buttons, or other items we could use to create our maker’s fair of goods on Friday, please send them to school with your child! The more items the better!!!
As we begin Unit 5 in Benchmark, we will be talking about the technology we use at home and at school. With this, we will also practice informational writing and research using the technology of the Internet. We will be researching and learning about the incredible penguin! If you would like to search online with your child to learn more about penguins this would be not only a great way to spend time together, but also a way to use technology at home.
As you can see, we are loving kindergarten and all of the ways we are learning! Thank you for all you do to help your child grow each day!
I am so excited to see more great things from them! I love my job and they are the biggest reason why!

Thank you for all you do! Please remember to review the items in your child’s book buddy bag daily They all have a bag of sight words to practice reading, writing, and spelling as well!
Please help us collect canned food and non-perishable foods like pasta and cereals for those in need! Our school goal is 600…but I know we can do more! The children have been learning about needs and wants! We learned that one of our needs is healthy food so we can not only grow strong but also be able to have food in our bellies to be the best learners we can be at school!
We will be collecting these food items all week at Salina! Please start sending in food donations as soon as tomorrow! Please remember, we can only collect food that is non-perishable like canned goods and boxed pasta. Thank you so very much for your generosity in this lesson in kindness for our little ones!
We have been learning about fire safety in kindergarten! Some of the brave firefighters came to Salina School to teach our little ones about fire safety! This was such an amazing experience for our kids!

We have been learning so much and enjoying so many great things these past two weeks!!! Check out the pictures and the updates below!!!! We are so excited to share with you the joyful ways we learn in Kindergarten at Salina!!!!
**One quick note! Your children have been doing an amazing job being responsible with bringing their Book Buddy Bags to school everyday! Thank you for helping them practice their letter identification and reading with the contents I send home in this bag! Today, your child received a Library Bag from our Classroom Library!!! These are picture books for you to read to your child! You can also use the pictures in the books to talk to your child and make up stories! In additon, you can ask your child to search for certain letters and “kiss their brain” when they find the letter!! These Library Book Bags are numbered! So when you and your child are finished borrowing the books, please return them in the bag and THEN you child can TRADE Library Bags with another student!!! This is so exciting for them! My hope is that this not only increases the time reading at home, but also engages the children in talks with each other about the books they have read. Most of all, my hope is that these books and all that we do in Kindergarten grows your child’s LOVE for READING and their CONFIDENCE as a READER!!!
**A Second quick note! Friday, October 22nd is the first annual Salina Pumpkin Patch Fall Fun Day!!!! Your child will be bringing home their very own pumpkin that they will paint in our classroom! We will also enjoy some yummy donuts and apple cider! Friday, October 29th is our costume day and party! We will have a parade in our costumes! If your child does not want to wear a costume, it is completely fine!!! We will be making spider hats to wear; as we will be learning information that week about spiders and writing facts about spiders!
OK!!! Are you ready to see some ADORABLE pictures????? Here we go!!! Enjoy!!!
