What we did today…Learning Labs, and virtual small groups

Posted on

Hello families!

Yesterday was our first in person learning labs in our classroom! We had a great time together! It is my goal to meet with each student once a week during learning lab time. Please be on time for pick up and drop for your child’s learning lab time at Oakman School.

It is also important for me to meet with the students in small groups virtually. I am working on a zoom set up that will be easy for all of you. Until then, as you have experienced, we are using Whatsapp for this time. Each group has 15 minutes, so please have your child ready with their white board and marker at their appointment time. Here is a reminder of appointment time for Virtual as well as In Person Learning Labs. When your child comes to Oakman for Learning Labs they only need to bring a mask. They do not need their laptops. I wan this time to be lap top free. 🙂

Learning Lab Virtual Meeting Schedule
Learning Lab In Person Schedule
We tasted and colored our favorite apple. We used our senses to decide if we like red or green apples the best.
We practiced using scissors to cut out our apple.
We graphed the apple we like the best

We practiced the letter Ii! We blended 2 sounds to make words that start with short i. (ex. if, is, in, it) We also talked about how i is a vowel and has a long sound and short sound. We looked for items in our homes that begin with the sound of letter i.

We learned about how to make the letter Ii
These friends found ice cream and an iron.
This friend found a picture of an igloo.
Letter Ii with Jack Hartmann
We practiced writing numbers 0-7 using the Eureka Math verbal pathways.
Writing a sentence with I can… and finding the uppercase letter in the sentence!!!
Second Step lesson about Self Talk!

We talked about what it means to be a friend. We said friends share. Friends smile and play together. Friends care about each other. Friends help each other. The children drew and told about how they can be a good friend and shared aloud their ideas after listening to the Benchmark poem about friends.

This friend said friends play outside together.
This friend wrote about her friend Lamis

Thank you for all you do!

Please join me on Zoom on Friday for a Parent Meeting at 2:00-2:30. I will be sending the link to the meeting on Schoology and whatsapp.

Fire Safety Week in Review!

Posted on

Hello Families!

We had such a fun week learning about fire safety tips! This was the official fire prevention and safety week! We had a virtual visit from one of Dearborn’s Fire Marshals (Marshal Jennifer) as well as one of their Fire Captains (Captain Mike)! They presented valuable information about how to stat safe in the case of a fire as well as gave us a virtual tour of a fire truck, ambulance, and the fire safety house! In addition, we also had a very special cadet from Dearborn Fire deliver plastic helmets, coloring books, and fire prevention and safety booklets to our school for our friends. (Cadet Ryan, my son) Here is a great fire safety site for kids and families! http://www.sparky.org/

Wednesday evening your child received a special porch delivery of fire prevention information as well as an at home learning packet along with our unit 3 Benchmark student workbook!

This week we finished pre-assessments and look forward to starting Learning Labs in person with all of my little angels!

In regards to fire safety week; Please make sure you all have working smoke alarms inside your home. If you do not, please visit your local fire department to get smoke alarms for free. Another great tip is to sit and discuss a fire escape plan with your children. Decide on a meeting place that does not move….like a tree across the street, or a particular neighbor’s house. Review with your child the importance of not touching things that are hot such as the stove, candles, lighters…..

Take a look at these pictures from our couple of days!

We love our fire helmets!
We practiced writing the letter Yy.
We learned about what fire fighters do!!! Thank yo, fire fighters for all of your dedication to keep us all safe!
We practiced writing the letter Yy
We showed ho to solve our first addition word problem!
We practiced color recognition, number recognition, and coloring to make this adorable scarecrow
We sorted pictures into categories; Safe and Not Safe
we practiced writing the letter Zz
We practiced writing numbers 0-5 using our verbal pathways from Eureka Math and showing how the quantity grows as the numbers go higher in order.
We practiced writing number with their matching quantities
We used our attention goggles to help our eyes and brain focus our attention.
We used our attention googles to help our brain and eyes focus our attention during a story about the Second Step Listening Rules. And……on a side note, this friend turned 5 a few days ago and we sang happy birthday to her and sent her birthday wishes!

Have an amazing weekend! Thank you for all you do!!!

Ms. Mehrhof

Hello Families!

Today was another great day of learning and laughter with my Young 5 friends. We even had a surprised visit from my uncle. Today is his birthday and my friends so joyously sang him Happy Birthday!!!

I would like to start something a little new for our class in the mornings. If we were in school we would be practicing STEM ideas during coming in time. This is when the children would be using building toys to create, design, and build with their friends. We would then talk about these creations and ideas! So, with that said, please help your child get a STEM basket together. It can include things to build with (plastic cups, empty containers, tape, Legos, blocks…… the list could go on and on!)

Take a look at some of the awesome things we did today!!!

This friend found a tomato, train, and taxi! They all begin with the letter Tt’s sound!
This friend found tea! Tea begins with the letter Tt’s sound!

This friend did some STEM work with cups!!!

This friend drew that she was surprised when the piglet showed up at the Bear’s house in “My Lucky Day”.
This friend drew that he was surprised in “My Lucky Day” when the piglet showed up at the Fox’s door!
We practiced writing our numbers while saying our number rhymes!
We made a number game where we mixed up the cards and put them in numerical order.
We practiced writing numerals 0-3 to show the quantity.

Thank you for all you do!!! Please do not forget to login to Benchmark and Schoology for today’s assignments! Thank you!!

Hello Families!

Today we had so much fun learning about the letter Tt! We also practiced making pictures in our minds about the story! (visualization) This is a great way for the children to become engaged in the story as well as a way to use their imagination to help them understand and comprehend the story. We listened to the story Apple Trouble by Ragnhild Scamell.

Apple Trouble by R. Scamell

We also talked about the meaning of the number 0.

Jack Hartmann telling us about the number 0

We also clapped the number of words in a sentence and practiced identifying the period. Here is a former video of us practicing the concept of counting words in a sentence. When reading with your child please point out to them how when we read books in English we read the words left to right and top to bottom. Point out there are spaces in between the words. I like to use emergent level books and have the students use their reading finger to touch each word when they read. 😉

This morning we reviewed the letter Rr. This friend found a ring! Ring begins the letter Rr’s sound.
This friend told us that rainbow and ring begin with the letter Rr’s sound.
We practiced writing the letter Tt!
We practiced making the letter Tt with our playdough!
We drew 4 apples with a red crayon and a green crayon and practiced comparing our drawing for the representation of 4 with our friends!

Please remember to upload your child’s assignment for today on Schoology as well as check our their Benchmark for today’s literacy activities!

Thank you for all you do!
