Week of March 23 – March 27

**CHECK GOOGLE CLASSROOM FOR MORE i-READY INFO**

  1. i-Ready: Complete 6 NEW i-Ready lessons and quizzes by Friday, March 27th. You will have 12 total (6 from last week, 6 from this week). YOU MUST PASS THE QUIZ IN ORDER TO MOVE ON TO THE NEXT LESSON! If you fail a quiz more than once, it will LOCK YOU OUT of that lesson.
  2. Khan Academy: Work on the Khan Academy Mission. You should be at 80% by the end of this week, 90% by the end of next week, and 100% by the end of the following week (Sunday, April 12). (I assigned some new assignments to help increase the percentage!) **Go to Google Classroom, scroll down to March 17th, and click the Google Doc I posted for explanations and examples for these assignments!**
  3. IXL: I have starred all of the assignments that 6th graders should be able to do. Many of you are preparing for the Advanced Math Placement Test. Completing all of the starred assignments will help students prepare for that test.
  4. Grades: I am submitting report cards for MP3 on Friday, March 27th. All assignments must be completed by then.

Friday 3/20

Morning Everyone!

1st Goal of Today: Finish the 6 i-Ready lessons with the quiz at the end. You MUST pass the quiz in order to move on to the next lesson. They are due by the end of the day! (It is a total of about 3 hours worth of work- 1 hour 3x per week).

2nd Goal of Today: Make sure the Khan and IXL from lessons 12-15 are finished. They are also due by the end of the day! (This is 3 weeks of assignments, which is about 20 minutes of work per day. Hopefully, you did not wait until the last minute! You will be very busy!)

Some things to remember aka FUN FACTS!

  • We spend 100 minutes in math class, 5 times per week. That is 500 minutes per week in the classroom working on JUST math. That’s over 8 hours!
  • I am asking that you spend around an hour, 3 times per week. Ideally, I would like 1 hour per day, but I know you have other classes.
  • If you spent one hour a day, 5 times per week, that is 300 minutes. That is 300/500 of the minutes we usually spend in school! That is only 60% of the work we normally do in class.
  • If you spent one hour, 3 times per week, that is 180 minutes. That’s only 36% of the work we normally do!
  • If you are sitting down, focusing, it won’t even take you that long! Thank you for your dedication to educational excellence!!
  • If you made the mistake of waiting until the last minute (we all do it once in a while, it happens!), PLEASE learn from this experience and make a schedule for yourself for next week so that you do not get behind.

IF YOU NEED A CHROMEBOOK: Please go to Lowrey with a parent between 12:30-2pm to sign one out. One per household.

REMIND: If you have not done so already, please go to my google classroom to get my code for Remind for your class.

ASKING FOR HELP: As always, I am here to help you! A lot of students are sending questions about things that I have already posted to my iBlog. Please read all of my posts! Also, to those students that have already sent questions, thank you so much for always being kind and polite!

Thursday 3/19

Hi guys! Hope everyone is safe and healthy!

GOAL FOR TODAY: FINISH THE 6 I-READY LESSONS. Then, get caught up on the Khan Academy and IXL Lessons.

As always, if you need help, get stuck, or have questions, please send me an email! 🙂

For students without a computer, PLEASE READ:

Lowrey School will be distributing Chromebooks to families in order to support their child’s Remote Learning. Each Chromebook was checked and cleaned by admin and personnel to ensure that they are safe to be used. Please note that Chromebooks need a working internet connection.   If your family does not have a working computer and is in need of a Chromebook, then please come to Lowrey’s main doors, tomorrow Thursday March 19th between times of 11:30am to 3pm.

One chromebook per household!
All parents will need to sign a consent form to insure Chromebooks will be returned in the same condition they were given. All parents and students are responsible for the Chromebooks. They must be returned once students return to school.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

How does i-Ready Work? What assignments am I supposed to complete?

When you took the diagnostic test, i-Ready gave you a score and created a path for you. The path is made up of lessons and quizzes. After each lesson, there is a quiz. You must pass the quiz in order to move on to the next lesson. The next lesson will be a new topic with a new quiz. For this week, I assigned 6 of these. So you would do this 6 times.

Is i-Ready the same for each student?

No. The diagnostic test determines at what level the students can answer questions on their own. Therefore, for every lesson in the path, the students should NOT need any help from parents, siblings, or anyone else. The path is tailored to meet the needs of that specific student. Some students might have a path that starts off with Number and Operations and other students might have a path that starts off with Geometry. Every student has strengths in different areas, and the path is made for that.

Which Khan Academy Assignments do I do this week?

Click on PAST assignments. Remember there is a little arrow at the bottom that goes to the next page. There were a total of 20 assignments that were assigned over a 3-week span and 6 from the week prior. That’s 26 assignments divided by 4 weeks = about 7 assignments per week = 1 per day! (Each assignment has only 4-7 questions! Easy peasy!)

Do I do ALL of the starred IXL? Or just the ones in the list that was posted?

Just the ones in the list for now (Lessons 12-15). I starred all of the lessons that 6th graders should have completed by the end of the year for those students that would like to get ahead in their work.

What percent do we need to get to for Khan? What about IXL?

The usual 100% per Khan Academy assignment. We are also aiming for 100% of the mission by the end of April. For IXL, the usual 80% is fine, but don’t spend hours and hours on one single assignment. If you are stuck on an assignment, send me and email and I will send you an explanation like one I would give if I were sitting right next to you. (Virtual teaching, cool!)

Wednesday 3/18

Good Morning Students,

Remember to check your school email and my iBlog daily! Please reach out to your classmates and be sure that they are checking the iBlog.

I am noticing that many students have not accessed the i-Ready Portal. Please go to Clever, sign in, and complete at least two lessons today. I spoke with several students over email and over the phone in the last two days, and many of those students still have not been on line. It is imperative that students are working from home to demonstrate that learning is still happening, even though we are not physically in school.

I’d like your main focus today to be the i-Ready lessons and quizzes. 6 of them are due Friday and are going in the Gradebook as Quiz Points. Khan and IXL assignments are also due at the end of the week.

Please reach out with your questions. Stay safe and healthy!

Tuesday 3/17

Please spend some time today working on your i-Ready though Clever lessons in your path. If you are struggling with something, please send me a message and I will help you! The system will flag that you are struggling if you are continuously submitting incorrect responses. Also, please reach out if you are having a hard time with any Khan or IXL. I really want you to understand the material so that we can move forward with some new topics next week. If there is a specific assignment that you would like more information on, I will post notes about it to my Google Classroom.

Thank you for your dedication to your education!!

Chromebooks for Families In Need: If your family does not have access to a computer, please send an email to your first hour teacher. The District is working on a solution for these families. More information on this to come.

Update Regarding Breakfast and Lunch for Families:

Dearborn Schools offering free breakfast and lunch pickup for students at six sites

Dearborn Public Schools is offering free pickup lunch and breakfast for students while school is closed for the mandatory shut down over the next three weeks.

Families will be able to stop in and pick up a bag with both breakfast and lunch for each child in the family.  Pickups will run daily from 10 a.m. to noon starting tomorrow, March 17 at Fordson, Edsel Ford and Dearborn high schools, McCollough-Unis, Salina Intermediate, and Woodworth Middle School.

Signage at each site will direct parents and students where to enter the building. Food will be near entrances to minimize the amount of time community members spend in the facilities.

Please note, meals are available to anyone age 18 and younger.  Students do not need to be present, and the Dearborn School student does not need to attend at that building.  A designated person can collect meals for multiple children.  Meals for Saturday and Sunday can be picked up on Friday.

The program will allow the District’s 20,700 students to continue to have access to healthy food.  Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last week ordered all Michigan schools closed from March 16 through April 3 to slow the spread of novel coronavirus and cases of COVID-19.  Dearborn Schools is scheduled for spring break April 6 to 10, so school will not resume in the District until April 13.

The grab-and-go meals will be served at least through April 3.

Superintendent Glenn Maleyko praised the District’s food service team for quickly implementing this drastic change in service to meet the needs of families.

“We appreciate the patience of our families and community as we all try to adjust to this sudden change from closing schools,” Dr. Maleyko said.  “More than three quarters of our students qualify for free or reduced priced school meals.  We realize this food is important to our families, many of whom may be facing additional financial hardships from the sudden economic changes related to COVID-19.”

Check the Dearborn Public Schools website at www.dearbornschools.org for any updates or changes to the meal program or for other issues regarding the school closure.

Check Google Classroom

Hi all- check my Google Classroom for more information regarding a question and answer forum on iLearn. Thank you!

Phone Numbers!

Hi all- would you please send me an email with the best phone number at which I could reach you? I would like to call each one of you personally over the next few days to check on you and make sure that you are doing okay and understand the requirements for the next few weeks. Thank you! 🙂
