GMOs: Are They Safe?

America’s food has come a very long way, and that is not a good thing. Genetically modified foods took over factories such as Frito-Lay, General Mills, Little Debbie, etc. Mass productions took the easy route and used unnatural fillers and selling it. Is that what you want in your body?

Lena Beydoun, a nutritionist, says, “My opinion on genetically modified foods is that they are horrible for you. They shouldn’t enter your body, and you should avoid them completely.” Beydoun also acknowledged, “The natural, real product is obviously better for you, although it may be more expensive but at the end of the day it’s what you put into your body.”

Anastasia, a whole foods employee, stated, “Meats and poultry can be genetically modified too. Whatever that cow is eating, your eating too. Farmers are now feeding cows and chickens corn and wheat so they can grow bigger and faster. If the cow or chicken isn’t grass-fed the finished product is garbage.” I also asked her what are three main ingredients to watch out for. Anastasia said, “Soy, corn, and sugar beets are highly processed and genetically modified.”

WebMd.com also has a whole article dedicated to GMOs. It mainly talks about how GMOs are bad for you but it also had a few interesting things that I didn’t know. It says that scientists are taking plants changing their DNA from another plant, bacteria, virus. The government pretty much just wanted to speed up the growing process. As I read on, I found a part in the article that said GMOs might be causing ADD and ADHD.

So I decided to do my own experiment by interviewing a teacher to see if the kids in their class is paying close attention or not. I interviewed Clinton Crace, a teacher here at Unis Middle School. He said, “I don’t think genetically modified foods are causing ADD and ADHD in children because there are no studies that show it and the kids in my classes are pretty focused in my class.” Crace ansalso shared, “I totally agree with educating students about GMOs I think it is really important they should know about this and what is entering their body.”

So next time you are shopping at a grocery store think twice before you pick up that bag of chips or gallon of milk. Health is most essential,it is also an investment so remember whatever you are choosing to eat will affect your health in the long run. Make wise choices and in order to live a high quality life.
